1 DEPARTMENT OF OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY TEL: EXT CHAIRPERSON: Kuo, Li-Chieh BRIEF INTRODUCTION Occupational therapy assists people of all ages with disabilities to become independent in their daily activities. By using purposeful activities, occupational therapists maximize patients independence, prevent disabilities, and enhance health. Due to an increasingly older population and higher incidence of chronic physical and mental disorders in Taiwan, the need for occupational therapists becomes more and more critical. Based on the belief of meeting the needs of our society, the Program of Occupational Therapy was established in 990, as a subdivision of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine. In 994, it was expanded as an independent department, and renamed as the Department of Occupational Therapy. In 200, a master level graduate program and an interdisciplinary doctoral program in Institute of Allied Health Sciences were further established to meet the urgent need for higher educated occupational therapy practitioners in Taiwan. The Department has admirable faculty, and state-of-the-art teaching and research equipments. To educate distinguished occupational therapists and to meet the current trend of occupational therapy profession, the department continually recruits qualified teachers and improves our teaching facilities. TEACHING OBJECTIVES The faculty considers the cultivation of excellent occupational therapy practitioners as the most important teaching goal. Graduates of the School could work as clinicians, educators, administrators and researchers in the occupational therapy profession. Therefore, our teaching emphasizes the training of professional abilities, practice of research projects and nature of administrative concepts. The faculty and students work closely with affiliated hospitals in order to combine education and clinical practice, and to enhance the quality of patient care as well. For graduate program, the Department lists several research directions, including: Research in neuro-physico-psychological functioning and assessment 6-09
