Grant that what we sing with our lips we may believe in our hearts, and what we believe in our hearts we may show forth in our lives, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen Send Us Your Scores! A Choral Anthem Competition By Andrew Walker, RSCM America President Do you ever find yourself reading though new music looking for originality, freshness, depth and integrity and coming away disappointed? Creativity and musical integrity are not limited to any one style, period, age group or idiom. RSCM America is of the opinion that there are many American composers and church musicians who write music of quality, often because a choir simply needs something for a particular Sunday or event. Some of these composers may not be well-known or published, yet deserve a wider audience. In order to identify talented composers across the country, and to promote the creation of new music of quality for choirs, RSCM America is pleased to announce an Anthem Competition. Here are the details and requirements: 1. Age restrictions: None! 2. Open to American citizens or legal permanent residents, both members of RSCM America and their non-member friends and colleagues. 3. The entrant must not be widely published, if at all. If published, in the spirit of trying to identify new talent, the entrant must only have between 1 and 5 published compositions. Any composition submitted for this competition must not have already been published or self-published, and must not already be available for purchase/download elsewhere. 4. The composition may be accompanied (organ or piano only) or a cappella. The length should be that of a standard Sunday morning anthem, i.e. 2-3 minutes in duration. It should be written with an SATB church/community choir in mind, one of average size (12-20 members) that may have only 2-4 members with musical training. Composers should bear in mind that the judges will be looking specifically for originality and creativity. 5. The text is to be taken from the Psalms. It is the responsibility of each composer to obtain copyright permission for the use of any translation (please note that the 1979 BCP Psalms are copyrighted) for the purpose of this competition, and, in the event of being named a winner or receiving an honorable mention, for sale and distribution to the general public. Proof of such permission must be sent with the entry form. continued on page 2
2 Send Us Your Scores! continued from front page 6. Deadline for submission: Friday, November 1, The winning entry and any entries receiving an honorable mention will be announced by Friday, January 31, Entries should be submitted in PDF format to the RSCM America Office and/or in Finale or Sibelius format. An MP3 or MIDI file created from the score may also be sent. 8. The entrance fee is $25, made payable to RSCM America, to be mailed to the RSCM America Office at Westminster Choir College with the completed application form (Page 7 of this newsletter!) Multiple submissions by the same composer are permitted; however, a separate application form and entrance fee of $25 must accompany each entry. 9. The entries will be judged by the following panel: Katherine Dienes- Williams, ARSCM; Simon Lole; Bruce Neswick, FRSCM; Craig Phillips; and Richard Webster, FRSCM. 10. The winning entry will win the combined total of the entry fees less any expenses that may have been incurred by RSCM America. For example, a total of 20 entry fees received would yield $ The winning entry will be made available by RSCM America for a fee as a PDF download. A contract with the composer will be made, noting an agreed-upon percentage of each sale that the composer will receive, to be paid to the composer on an annual basis. 12. Any other entries that receive an honorable mention will be made available in a collection in PDF format for purchase from the RSCM America office. Monies received from purchases of this collection will go toward providing scholarships for children in need that attend RSCM America Summer Training Courses. 13. The winning composition will be made available to all the Summer Courses for possible inclusion in their repertoire. 14. The Board of Directors of RSCM America will not be held liable with regard to the intellectual ownership of each composition. It will be assumed that the entrant submitting a composition is indeed the composer of the music submitted. 15. No member of the Board of Directors of RSCM America or family member of a Director of RSCM America may participate in this competition. 16. If the requirements in items 2, 3, 5, 14, and 15 above are found to have been disregarded, the entrant's submission will be removed from the contest and the entrance fee forfeited. Chorister Festival Welcomes RSCM Affiliates in Delaware Immanuel Church, Highlands in Wilmington, Del. hosted an RSCM Chorister Festival on Saturday, April 20 that culminated in an Evensong service at 4 p.m. 25 young choristers and 15 adults from Immanuel, Newark (Del.) United Methodist Church, and other RSCM Affiliates joined for the all-day event, which was organized by Steven Patchel and directed by Gordon Appleton of RSCM in the U.K. Featured musical selections for the day included Wesley s Blessed be the God and Father and Jeremy Woodside s Fauxbourdon Service (2- part) for the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis. Mr. Appleton engaged the choristers throughout with warm-ups and stories as well as vocal and musical guidance. Breaks with activities, snacks, and lunch made the day fun and enjoyable for all. Mr. Patchel spoke enthusiastically about the event, noting that churches and children need to have a connection to something larger (isn t that what spirituality/religion is about?) than their own group. And it empowers them to achieve more than [what is] possible in their own isolated setting. Children s natural energy makes things happen like friendships and dynamic music-making, but I think larger groups catalyze that energy. He hopes that this Chorister Festival has planted a seed for future RSCM events in Delaware and beyond. Page 2 Royal School of Church Music in America
3 Sing at Westminster Abbey with RSCM America Have you always dreamed of singing in Westminster Abbey? Have you ever wanted to spend New Year s Eve in London? Now you can do both! Join adult singers from RSCM America s many Affiliates as they serve as choir-inresidence at Westminster Abbey from December 29, 2014 through January 2, 2015! The RSCM America Choir, as it s being called, will sing four Evensong services at the Abbey during that week, with most days free until rehearsal begins at 3:30 p.m. The music director will be Andrew Walker, President of RSCM America. Participants will book their own flights, which allows for arrival and departure flexibility, and all will stay at the Holiday Inn Express Limehouse, which is just a short tube ride away from the center of London. By staying in the same hotel for the week, all singers will be able to get to know one another over breakfast (which is included), discuss with one another about various sightseeing options during the day, and conspire about which pub or restaurant to try after the next Evensong! The cost, in addition to airfare, lodging, and meals, will be just $50 per participant. Singers will be adults only, ages 21 and up, and will comprise a maximum of 16 sopranos, 8 altos, 8 tenors, and 8 basses. All singers will be chosen by audition specifically, through recordings that will be reviewed by Andrew Walker and Bruce Neswick, FRSCM. Repertoire will be sent to selected participants at least two months prior to the trip, and it is expected that all music will be completely learned by the time each singer arrives in the U.K. If you are interested in this marvelous opportunity, please send an to Andrew Walker (andrew@ stmichaelschurch.com). Note your level of interest, your voice part, the name of your church, and your level of choral experience. To all members, particularly choir directors: Please pass this information along to all of your RSCM friends, choir members, and singers that might enjoy this trip. It is 18 months away, but putting aside $100 a month starting now would cover the basic costs! St. Paul s UMC Houston Sings at the Gulf Coast Course Mid-Winter Festival St. Paul s United Methodist Church (Houston) children s music director Anna Teagarden and 15 of her trebles joined choristers from around the state of Texas to participate in the 2013 RSCM Gulf Coast Course Mid- Winter Festival, held in San Antonio on January 19 and 20. Clinicians for the festival were Joseph Causby, Robert Brewer, and Courtney Daniell-Knapp. On Sunday morning the trebles led Eucharist at historic St. Mark s Episcopal Church, San Antonio, then sang an Evensong service in the afternoon at St. Luke s Episcopal Church. Music for the Festival included Haydn s Little Organ Mass (Missa Brevis no. 7 in B-flat), Malcolm Boyle s Thou, O God, art Praised in Zion, Ayleward s Preces and Responses, and Stanford s Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in C. Ms. Teagarden will manage the RSCM Gulf Coast Course for girls ages at Rice University in Houston from June For more information please visit Royal School of Church Music in America Page 3

6 Richard Webster Leads Choral Festival for Trebles and Adults in Florida By Christopher Harrell, Director of Music and Chorister Program, St. Philip s Episcopal Church and School, Coral Gables, Fla. On February 22 and 23, St. Philip s Episcopal Church and School hosted a Choral Festival for trebles and adults to bring awareness to RSCM Music Sunday. The event was co-sponsored by St. Philip s Church and the Miami Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. We were delighted to have Richard Webster, FRSCM, from Trinity Church in Boston to lead the two-day festival. Preparation for the event began months ahead by getting the word out to area churches. We were very pleased to have a number of adult singers from the Anglican Chorale of Southeast Florida, directed by Matthew Steynor, Music Director at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Miami; adult singers from St. Thomas Episcopal Parish, directed by Ken Willy, Director of Music at St. Thomas and Dean of the Miami AGO Chapter; and singers from St. Philip s Parish Choir, directed by Christopher Harrell. Choristers from the Parish Schools of St. Philip s and St. Thomas gathered after school at St. Philip s on Friday afternoon to work with Mr. Webster. Following the same pattern as summer RSCM courses, the trebles sang the soprano line in all of the choral literature, which included the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in B-flat by Stanford, the anthem Jesu, joy of man s desiring by J. S. Bach, an Anglican Chant adapted from Ein feste Burg by Martin Luther, and a setting of Responses for Treble Voices composed by Richard Webster, available from Advent Press. Following the twohour trebles rehearsal, the choristers were treated to pizza provided by St. Philip s. On Friday evening, the Miami AGO Chapter hosted a catered dinner for chapter members and Mr. Webster. After the meal, Mr. Webster led a program on hymn arrangements and accompanying on the two-manual Moeller organ at St. Philip s. Saturday was a full day, beginning with a morning rehearsal at 10 a.m. with the 24 adult singers. After lunch, the 36 treble choristers returned, and a combined rehearsal took place. The culmination was Choral Evensong at 4 p.m. sung by the 60-voice choir under the direction of Mr. Webster and accompanied by host organist Christopher Harrell. The visit of Mr. Webster was made possible by St. Philip s Episcopal Church, Coral Gables (The Reverend Mary Conroy, Rector) and the Miami Chapter of the American Guild of Organists (Ken Willy, Dean.) This was our first time hosting a choral event for trebles and adults, and we were pleased that it was wellattended both by participant singers and those attending the concluding Choral Evensong. Since the date suggested for RSCM Music Sunday (June 23) falls within the summer months, we chose to celebrate early, during our regular choir season, which worked very well. We are looking forward to continuing this new tradition of hosting an event to bring together treble and adult voices next year! Page 6 Royal School of Church Music in America
