Short course on Hazardous Waste Management 31 August - 11 September 2015 Delft, Netherlands Antwerp, Belgium
Hazardous Waste Hazardous waste arises within industrial activities, commercial activities and at the consumer levels. Logistics and management of this waste stream is a specific challenge for low income countries as it has a high impact on human health and the environment if not treated properly and requires cost-intensive measures and infrastructure. Best practice cases show that hazardous waste or its negative impacts can be minimized or prevented by effective governance as well as organizational and technical measures requiring from actors along the value chain a general awareness, specific knowledge and technical knowhow. The ISWA Working Group on Hazardous Waste and UNEP recognized in the 1990s the need for capacity building in the field of hazardous waste management and subsequently developed the Training Resource Pack (TRP), published in Ten years after the publication of the TRP, ISWA took the initiative in partnership with UNIDO and UNEP to update the TRP training materials and make it accessible to a wider public. A large group of experts contributed to the current TRP+, which will assist educators in organising comprehensive training programmes on hazardous waste. Professionals can also use the materials for briefing notes and project summaries.
Concept In conjunction with the ISWA World Congress 2015 and based on the materials provided by the TRP+ a course on hazardous waste management (HWM) is organized jointly by UNESCO-IHE, UNIDO, ISWA, UNEP and the Berlin University of Technology. The course gives participants the opportunity to gain knowledge about current practices and state-of-the-art developments as well as the organizational and legislative framework to prevent and handle hazardous waste. The course gives practitioners from various world regions the opportunity to share, discuss and develop case studies from their own professional experience. Participants will: work with leading experts in the field of hazardous waste; interact in small groups on adopting solutions for certain hazardous waste management challenges ; use the ISWA 2015 World Congress as a platform to present results and findings of the training to an international audience; build a global network with practitioners working in the field of hazardous waste. The organizers target a group of max. 24 carefully selected participants preferably from Low- and Middle-income countries having: at least a BSc-degree in science, technology or engineering; a background in solid waste management; ideally practical experience in hazardous waste management.
Course Design The Hazardous Waste Management (HWM) Course is a two-weeks (August 31, September 11, 2015) event of which one week is held at UNESCO-IHE, Delft, the Netherlands and one week will be conducted in Antwerp, Belgium. The second week of the course includes the participation of the ISWA World Congress 2015 in which the participants will play an active role. The course will cover the following subjects: 1. Fundamentals and environmental impacts for hazardous waste; 2. Resource efficiency and waste avoidance; 3. Treatment technologies and management practices for hazardous waste; 4. Legislative aspects of hazardous waste management, e.g. Basel Convention; 5. Case studies.
Place Delft (The Netherlands) and Antwerp (Belgium) Date 31 August - September 11, 2015 Participants Application Course language Certificate Training material Course fee Course faculty The number of participants is limited to 24 persons. Gender and geographic balance will be taken into account. For online application go to and select Hazardous Waste Management. Potential participants are expected to submit a one page declaration stating their practical involvement in hazardous waste management as well as their motivation to attend the course. Language of communication is English. A certificate of course completion will be awarded to all those who actively participate in the entire course. Training materials will be made available electronically. The course fee amounts to EUR 2,500. The fee of attending the HWM course includes: excursion to HWM facilities in the Netherlands and Belgium; all course facilities & materials; access to all participant services of the ISWA World Congress. Contributors to the course are recruited from those involved in the updating of the ISWA-UNEP Training Resource Pack as well as practitioners involved in (aspects of) HW management including Mr. Jean-Paul Leglise, the Chair of the ISWA Working Group on Hazardous Waste. The course scientific and organizational committee consists of Prof.Dr. V. Susanne Rotter, Berlin University of Technology, Elisabeth Herbeck, MSc, UNIDO, Jiao Tang, MSc, ISWA and Assoc. Prof.Dr. Maarten A. Siebel, UNESCO- IHE.
The training will be jointly organized by UNIDO, the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, the International Solid Waste Association ISWA, UNEP and the Berlin University of Technology, Department for Waste Management.
