4 HIRING AN APPRENTICE Apprenticeships Explained Apprentices are aged 16 and over and combine on-the-job training with studying towards their chosen apprenticeship qualification, and can be new or existing employees. In regards to hours of work, Apprentices must work for a minimum of 30 hours per week. Apprentices or employees undertaking an apprenticeship must be paid the National Minimum Wage rate per hour dependent on their age whilst working for you.
