2 2 Definition of a Transfer Applicant If you complete college units (at ELAC or any other college) after the summer following graduation from high school, you are considered a transfer student The number of units you have completed at the time you ENTER a CSU determines the admission standards that will apply to your application *When you fill out the CSU application you should indicate the amount of units you will have completed by the time you start at your transfer university, which must be at least 60 semester/90 quarter units for UPPER DIVISION TRANSFER

4 4 CSU Facts California Community College (CCC) transfers have highest priority for admission than any other group CSUs emphasize discipline/major knowledge and the practical application of that knowledge, where was the UC system emphasizes theory CSU campuses have a mix of commuter and residential students Majority of campuses operate on the semester system so it is an easier transition from a CCC

5 Selection for Transfer Admission CSU campuses use a common set of factors (next slide) to make admission decisions but their selectivity makes them different 5 Selectivity All campuses have higher standards for out-of-state students and international students Many campuses have higher standards for particular majors A few campuses (the most impacted) have higher standards for all applicants Please note, that if you are an international student at ELAC, each CSU campus has a different process for application and might want you to complete either the International Student application OR the California resident application since you are transferring from a California community college-- check to find out which application is required

6 Upper Division Transfer Requirements 6 The CSU admissions offices look at 3 factors: 1. Your college grades Your overall GPA must be at least 2.0 Your GPA is calculated using all transferable coursework attempted For highly selective CSUs, a GPA of 2.0 is often not sufficient to be admitted 2. The college coursework you have completed, especially in general education, including at least one course in English Composition, one course in oral communication, one courses in critical thinking and one course in quantitative reasoning (math) = GOLDEN FOUR Must be with a grade of C or better 3. Whether you are in good standing at the last college or university attended

7 7 Upper Division General Education Requirements California Community College (CCC) transfers have two options for fulfilling CSU lower division general education requirements: CSU General Education (GE) Breadth OR IGETC Talking to a counselor can help you decide which path is best for you You can complete a maximum of 39 semester units of CSU GE Breadth before transferring to CSU If you are pursuing a high-unit major such as engineering, some mathbased fields, science or other technical majors, you will need to work closely with your counselor to plan which classes you should take within your Ed Plan Some CSU campuses do allow high-unit majors to take fewer general education courses before transfer, however, you will eventually have to meet the general education requirements in order to graduate from CSU

8 Certification of General Education Requirements ELAC can certify completion of up to 39 lower division semester units applicable to GE-Breadth requirements or a total package of 39 semester units for IGETC 8 Certification refers to official notification from a CCC that a transfer student has completed courses fulfilling CSU lower division general education requirements; this is separate from your student transcript You can request CSU GE or IGETC Certification in the ELAC Admissions Office prior to transfer as soon as you ve met the requirements

9 9 CSU Good Standing Requirement Good standing= you are eligible to reenroll at your last college or university Most students are in good standing and do not have an issue meeting this requirement If you are not in good standing, you will have to resolve any outstanding issues with that college or university California Community College (CCC) transfers have two options for fulfilling CSU

10 10 CSU Impaction Most CSU campuses have some impacted majors that require additional admission criteria Detailed information about the CSU impacted campuses and majors can be accessed at: o.shtml

11 11 Major vs. Campus Impaction Major Impaction Major impaction means that the number of applications from fully eligible students to a designated major on a CSU campus exceeds the number of spaces available in that major However, students can still be admitted to the campus in an alternate major Campus Impaction Campus impaction (otherwise known as campus wide impaction) means that a campus has exhausted existing enrollment capacity in terms of the instructional resources and physical capacity of the campus Because the campus receives more eligible applicants during the initial admission application filing period than can be accommodated, the campus must therefore restrict enrollment to the campus for a specific enrollment category (i.e. first-time freshmen or transfers)

12 A Degree with a Guarantee 12 A CCC student who earns an AA-T or AS-T will benefit from the following: Earn and Associate Degree Guaranteed admission to a CSU Know exactly what courses to take AA-T or AS-T is most beneficial for: students preparing for impacted CSU majors or campuses students that are preparing broadly for more than one CSU In a major for which ELAC does not offer major preparation

Visiting the Career and Job Services office can help you explore majors and you can also visit to learn about career planning If you know what your ambitions are and what your major will be, does the campus offer courses in that area? Do you prefer attending a small campus or larger one? Do you prefer a campus in a big city, or one that is in a rural community? If you enjoy an extracurricular activity, does the campus offer it?

21 How can I get help with the 21 Each application costs $55 application fee? If the application fee poses a financial hardship, a fee waiver request is included in your CSU online application Only California residents are eligible for application fee waivers, however, fee waivers may also be available for AB540 students In the event where you are not granted the fee waiver from the CSU application and believe that you qualify, please submit a paper fee waiver waiver_form.pdf to each CSU campus directly and they will let you know if it is granted If you choose this option please indicate you are paying by check in order to submit your application

22 What is the Educational 22 Opportunity Program (EOP)? EOP is designed to improve access and retention of historically low-income and educationally disadvantaged students EOP provides admission and academic assistance to EOP-eligible undergraduate students You can apply for EOP program once you submit your CSU application Every EOP program is different at each CSU campus This program has a similar goal of EOP&S but it is different and requires a separate application For more information visit:

23 23 Final Thoughts Majority of applicants who are denied have errors on their application If you are unsure, ask!
