1 Starting Point Community Learning Partnership York Street Tablets Class Week 1 What We All Use Ipad The ipad is a tablet computer first offered by Apple in Although a few rival models were previously available, the ipad is largely credited with creating the current market for tablets by late 2012, more than 100 million ipads had been sold worldwide. Some 71 million ipads were sold in 2013 alone. The device resembles a much larger version of Apple's iphone or its ipod Touch, and is about the same size as a magazine. Kindle Fire The Kindle Fire is Amazon s answer to Apple s ipad tablet computer. Unlike the E-ink Kindle, which is designed for reading text-based media like books, newspapers and some blogs, the Fire is aimed at helping people consume TV programmes, movies and music. Essentially based on Google s Android operating system, but modified so that it is unrecognisable from the search giant s mobile phone software, the Kindle Fire has a 7-inch screen and can only play content that has been purchased from Amazon s online store. There are also thousands of apps and games available for the device. Members of Amazon Prime, the company s premium (paid-for) membership programme that was established to offer faster delivery, can also enjoy unlimited, instant streaming of over popular movies and TV shows. Books can also be borrowed for free from the Kindle Owners' Lending Library. Hudl You could say that the majority of people looking to buy a tablet want an ipad, but at the same time the majority of people can't justify spending 399 or more on one. The next step taken is to find out what is the best tablet they can afford. At 119 the, Tesco Hudl is high up on the list of affordable tablets. The most important things you need to know about the Tesco Hudl are that it's a 7-inch Android tablet that comes with 16GB of internal storage - complete with an expandable microsd slot. It also has a sharp screen and an acceptable processor which delivers good performance. The overall look and feel of the device is impressive for the price, and it is built to withstand the harsher realities of family life.

2 Buying An App 1 The term buying or purchasing an app is used regardless of which devise you use and doesn t necessarily imply parting with money. Some apps are free so purchasing them is simply a case of entering your password to download them. With ipads you use the app store, with a Kindle Fire you use Amazon s AppStore and with most android devises including the Hudl you use Google Play. To the right are the icons. Now try and find yours on your devise. 2 Kindle Fire First You might find something you want to buy by browsing or searching in the Amazon AppStore, but however you find it, when you re ready to buy, you can follow these steps: 1. From the app s Product Info screen, tap the Price button. Note that if the app is free, this button reads Free, but if you have to pay for the app, the app price (such as $0.99) is displayed on the button. When you tap the button, its label changes to Buy App (for paid apps) or Get App (for free apps).

3 2. Tap the button again to download paid or free apps to your Kindle Fire HD. A Downloading button appears, showing the download progress. When the installation is complete, an Open button appears. 3. If you want to use the app immediately, tap the Open button. To use the app at any time, locate it in the App library or, if you ve used it recently, on the Carousel; tap the app to open it. 3 Hudls & Other Andriod Tablets 1. The Google Play Store is one of the things that make owning an Android phone rewarding. You can visit the Play Store not only to obtain more apps for your phone but also to go shopping for music, books, and videos (films and TV shows). Someday, Google might even sell robots at the Play Store. Until then, the selection seems adequate and satisfying. 2. You access the Google Play Store by opening the Play Store app, found in the apps drawer. You may also find a launcher on the Home screen.

4 3. After opening the Play Store app, you see the main screen, similar to the one shown. Categories appear that help you browse for apps, games, books, and so on. The rest of the screen highlights popular or recommended items. 4. Find apps by choosing the Apps category from the main screen, also known as Store Home. The next screen lists popular and featured items plus categories you can browse by swiping the screen right to left. The category tabs appear toward the top of the screen. 5. To see more information about an item, touch it. Touching something doesn t buy it but instead displays a more detailed description, screen shots, a video preview, comments, plus links to similar items, as shown.

5 4 Then ipads The App Store is one of the ipad's built-in apps. This portal will get you to thousands of great apps for everything from games to bean counting. Here's your quick introduction to using the App Store to obtain whatever apps your heart desires: 1. Tap the App Store icon on your ipad Home screen. 2. At this point, you have several options for finding apps: Tap in the Search field, enter a search term, and tap the Search button on the onscreen keyboard to see results. Tap the Previous or Next arrow to see more selections, or tap the See All link to display all selections. Tap one of the images of an app in the Spotlight area at the top of the screen to see more details about it. Tap the New or What's Hot tab at the top of the screen to see those categories of apps. Tap the Top Charts button on the bottom of the screen to see what free and paid apps other people are downloading most.

6 Tap the Categories button to search by types of apps. Getting apps from the App Store Once you have an account, you can use the saved payment information there to buy apps with a few simple steps, or download free apps. In this example, you can download the free ibooks app. 1. With the App Store open, tap the Search field and enter ibooks. 2. Tap the Price button (which in this case reads "Free") for ibooks in the results that appear. Note that, to get a paid app, you'd tap on the Price button, which would display the cost of the app at this point. 3. The Price button changes to read Install App (or in the case of a paid app, the button changes to read Buy App). Tap that button. The app downloads; if you purchase an app that isn't free, at this point your credit card is charged for the purchase price.

7 Deleting An App 5 To delete an installed app from your Amazon Fire App library, press and hold it until a menu appears and then tap Remove from Device. The app, however, isn t gone it s still stored in the Amazon Cloud Drive, and you can download it again at any time by tapping it in the Cloud tab of the App library. 6 Using a Hudl this is how to remove apps from the Google Play Store My Apps list. 1 Open up the Play Store. 2 Be it on screen or physical button hit the Menu button and go to My apps. 3 Swipe over to the right and go from INSTALLED to ALL. 4 Here s the kicker: Press and hold onto an app listed. It will highlight that app and you will see a checkmark at the top left along with 1 selected and an X at the top right. 5 Start tapping the apps that you want gone and number of selected apps will go up. Note: You won t be able to select any apps that are currently installed.

8 6 Once you have selected all the apps that you want deleted, hit the X in the top right corner, and tap OK to remove all of them. You can also remove apps one by one by tapping the X that is to the right of every app listed (or circle with a line through it in older versions of the Play Store), but it s not as efficient since you have to tap OK again for each app you want to remove. While it may not be as simple as having a purchased apps tab, it will at least gives us a chance to clean those purchased and free apps up a bit. Maybe someday we ll get that purchased tab back, but until then this may just be the next best thing. 7 On an ipad: Hold your finger down on any application's icon until they all appear to shake. Tap the small "X" in the upper right corner of the application you want to remove. Tap the "Delete" button in the confirmation window that pops up. Press the "Home" button again to lock the remaining applications. Home task please think of 2 questions that you would like to know the answers too. These questions will make up the lesson plans for the next few weeks.
