2 caring for our environment Climate change is the greatest environmental challenge of our time. Countries around the world have committed to targets to tackle climate change and businesses like ours need to play our part. e2v is rising to the challenge with a new environmental programme called Bright Green a global initiative which aims to reduce our impact on global warming and climate change. In our environmental policy, e2v s plc board has, for many years, been committed to continuous improvement and has used initiatives such as ISO 14001, the environmental management standard, to drive change.

3 BrightGreen / caring for our environment / 03 During 2009, a key indicator of how we are doing as a company will be the Environmental Index, which measures our efforts to minimise our impact on the environment. Progress against the index is measured as a percentage score and our current progress is about 50%, so we are setting ourselves some stretching targets to increase this figure. One of these targets is to reduce our carbon footprint by 3% during 2009, and we can only achieve this with your help. Over the coming months we will be involving you in changes to how we work and communicating progress against our targets. We also want people to consider their own personal carbon footprint at home. This leaflet provides a calculator for you to work out how you contribute to global warming and climate change. Please take the time to use the calculator with your family and friends and see what you can do to help the environment you may even find you save money as well as help save the planet! 4 How does this affect you? We know that emissions of greenhouse gases cause global warming and this is leading to climate change. Your individual contribution to this process can be measured by calculating your carbon footprint. Any reduction in your carbon footprint will contribute to global efforts to control climate change and global warming. What is a carbon footprint? An individual or family carbon footprint is a measure of the greenhouse gases we each produce and has units of kg (or tonnes) of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) equivalent. This carbon footprint is made up of two parts the primary footprint and the secondary footprint. 1. The primary footprint is a measure of our direct emissions of CO 2 from the burning of fossil fuels, including domestic energy consumption and transportation (e.g. car and plane). We have direct control of these and this is what we will calculate in this leaflet. 2. The secondary footprint is a measure of the indirect CO 2 emissions from the whole lifecycle of products we use those associated with their manufacture and eventual breakdown. To put it simply the more we buy, the more emissions will be caused on our behalf.

Then use the conversion factors below to work out the equivalent kg CO 2 for each. Therefore different factors are needed for the electricity calculations in the table above, depending on which country you live in. 8 Step 4 Think about what else you use Waste > 600 kg of waste is generated each year by each individual in the UK 74% goes to landfill 8% is incinerated 18% is recycled > 100 kg of waste packaging produces 83 kg CO 2 > 100 kg of waste food produces 32 kg CO 2 > The manufacture of 5 plastic bags produces 1 kg CO 2 Recycling Buying recycled goods and increasing your home recycling by just 10 per cent will save around 90 kg CO 2 a year. Food An independent report suggests that a typical UK resident produces 1390 kg CO 2 from food production and transport (both national and international). Local food production and consumption halves this figure. How can you help? > Buy products with less packaging > Consider organic foods > Eat seasonal and locally produced food The information you collect to calculate your personal carbon footprint is confidential to you and is not required by e2v, but we may ask a random sample of employees to provide their data in confidence so we can get a picture of the typical carbon footprint of one of our employees and share this with the rest of the organisation.
