2 The ultimate objective of CLARIN is to create a European federation of existing digital repositories that include language-based data, to provide uniform access to the data, wherever it is, and to provide existing language and speech technology tools as web services to retrieve, manipulate, enhance, explore and exploit the data. The primary target audience is researchers in the humanities and social sciences and the aim is to cover all languages relevant for the user community. The objective of the current CLARIN Preparatory Phase Project ( ) is to lay the technical, linguistic and organisational foundations, to provide and validate specifications for all aspects of the infrastructure (including standards, usage, IPR) and to secure sustainable support from the funding bodies in the (now 23) participating countries for the subsequent construction and exploitation phases beyond CLARIN

The CLARIN Newsletter distribution list The actual content of the CLARIN Newsletter distribution list has been obtained, in time, as follows. First, an initial list has been made up with addresses of people knowing to have manifested the interest to receive the Newsletter. By the same moment, a subscription form has been set up on the CLARIN site at which can be accessed from the Newsletter's page at All subscription demands have been operated continuously and added to the initial form of the list. The first four issues of the Newsletter were distributed using this list (let's call it initial-list.txt), which, at the moment of the dissimination of the CNL issue #4 counted 113 addresses. Then, following a suggestion of the EB, this list has been combined also with the list of addresses of all CLARIN members. This list, called member-list.txt has been compiled from the information on the table at using the Linux commands: > cat members.htm grep -e "'mailto:[^']*'" -o cut -f2 -d":" cut -f1 -d"'" sed "s/ -at- /@/" sort uniq > member-list.txt The combination of the initial-list.txt with the members' list was obtained with the sequence of Linux commands: > cat member-list.txt > tmp.txt; cat initial-list.txt >> tmp.txt; cat tmp.txt sort uniq > full-list.txt This list is addressable as CNL_distribution@info.uaic.ro, and is presently hosted on a server on the Faculty of Computer Science of the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi (UAIC).
