3 Social Marketing Educational Consultancy Poverty Reduction Project management and development initiatives My core competencies in this area are as follows: Project Planning and administration: This has been one of my key responsibilities as the head of The Promise Foundation. My competencies include: Grant Proposal Writing, Management of Project Cycles, Logical Framework Analysis and Results Based Management, Performance monitoring and evaluation. Interface between industry, employers, training providers and employees / career aspirants: As an extension of my experience in guidance and livelihood planning, I have been involved in interfacing between industries and training providers, to develop parameters for internships, work experience opportunities and curriculum. This has included bringing the various stake holders together for dialogue and action planning. Bridging programmes for work force development: I have been involved in interacting with employers to create training programmes that would sharpen the suitability of potential employees to the employers requirements. This has included the creation of bridge programmes that address core employability skills such as promoting language fluency, acquiring competency in basic academic subjects and inculcating work culture. Curriculum innovation for part time learning: I have been involved in developing flexible curricula for mature learners who are available only on a part time basis. My expertise in this area is with respect to developing a curricular template that would be relevant across a wide range of subjects. Training for culture-sensitive service delivery in multicultural contexts I have over the recent past developed training programmes for those who work in multicultural contexts designed to sharpen the effectiveness and relevance of their service delivery. These programmes draw from the notion of cultural preparedness and help develop insights into personal training styles. The training focuses on skills related to contextualising services, developing sensitivity to mindsets and recognising deeply embedded cultural practices and beliefs that could be drawn into a training programme. PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE Media Centre Assistant in Audio Visual Department ( ) Media Centre is an organisation that specialises in developing audio-visuals and video films for educational and promotional purposes. My responsibilities covered research and script development, photography, cinematography and video editing. Themes on which I worked included educational aids, stories for children, careers education material, issues related to the environment and eco-friendly tourism. Most of the projects I have worked on focused on productions for groups in the age range of 15 to 25 years. The Promise Foundation (TPF) Founder Trustee and currently Director ( on going) The Promise Foundation is a charitable trust that I helped establish along with a group of mental health professionals and educators to address the Educational, Mental Health and Potential Realisation needs of children and youth from socially and economically disadvantaged homes. TPF was conceived as an organisation that would attempt to convert relevant research findings from the Behavioural Sciences, into applications pertinent to the needs of the poor in India. 4 for the career development of adolescents and youth living in urban slums. More specifically, some of my responsibilities have focused on: the development and implementation of Work Awareness and You (WAY) a careers education programme, for high school students from economically disadvantaged homes. WAY has been developed in Kannada, the local vernacular. the development and implementation of Self-Efficacy Training (SET), a psychological intervention for unemployed youth that addresses cognitive factors such as career beliefs, self efficacy and attitudes to career development, in addition to focusing on their work skills development. developing and implementing life skills education programmes for youth, concentrating on health, life skills education and leadership development. developing, assessing and implementing a careers, vocational skills and life skills education programme for institutionalised adolescents, who are in conflict with the law. These programmes were executed in partnership with the State Government Department of Women and Child Development and the Karnataka State Council for Child Welfare, focusing primarily on Juvenile Homes in Karnataka. Consultant Psychologists Group (CPG) Director - Counselling and Development Services ( on going) CPG is a consultancy group providing psychological services for children and adults, from relatively more privileged backgrounds. My role in the organisation has been: the development and implementation of Shine, a careers education programme for high school students from more privileged homes. In addition to aptitude and interest testing, the programme includes methods for the dissemination of careers information, an individualised careers report, a parent workshop and follow-up services for ongoing career path planning. working with a team of psychologists and educators to provide educational consultancy services to schools, colleges and universities. My work as an educational consultant has included helping institutions set up departments for counselling and careers education, providing in-service teacher training and dealing with curriculum development. providing consultancy services to Government of India projects. Private Psychological Clinic Clinical Psychologist My work as a clinician has focused in particular, on therapies for stress mediated disorders with particular reference to adolescent stress. My therapeutic interventions draw from Cognitive and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Assertiveness and Interpersonal Skills Training and Relaxation Training. Journalism and work in the Media I led a team that conceptualised and launched Harmony - a national youth magazine (quarterly) for the Methodist Church in India. Harmony focused on blending the sacred with the secular, by exposing Christian young people to socially and economically pressing issues and the need for social action. The team of which I was the leader comprised young people from 12 different parts of India. I have been a columnist for the Times of India (a national Indian daily newspaper) and also contribute regularly to various magazines and popular journals. 5 I have also been involved in the production of audio visuals and educational videos and documentaries. Consultancy to Government of India Organisations for Developmental Initiatives In addition to my work through organisations described above, I also have experience in working as a consultant to government other organisations and my duties have included: Resource person for the Government of India s most recent curriculum reform initiative, in the National Focus Group on Work and Education. Resource person for the Government of India s Working Groups for the Eleventh Five Year Plan ( ): Adolescents' Development and Youth Affairs International Consultancy 1. Psychological needs assessment survey and country strategy for establishing guidance and counselling services UNICEF, Rwanda (January February 2003): This consultancy was funded by UNICEF and managed by the Center for British Teachers, for the Government of Rwanda, Ministry of Education. The month-long consultancy focused on the Guidance and Counselling needs of young people in Rwanda and required me to develop the national strategy for Guidance and Counselling in Rwanda. This led to a capacity building project that trained school teachers and youth workers to deliver counselling and livelihood planning services. 2. Establishment of Job Centres and Career Counselling Cells Maldives, World Bank (February March 2004): This consultancy was funded by the World Bank and managed by the Polytechnic Institutes of New Zealand, for the Government of Maldives, Ministry of Employment and Labour. The consultancy focused on developing a strategy for establishing job centers and career guidance services for Maldivian young people living on remote islands, with little or no access to information and counselling support. The consultancy also required me to develop a social marketing strategy that would address young people's mind sets to work and career. 3. Country strategy for guidance and counselling services South Africa (May 2005). I was a resource person reporting to the Human Sciences Research Council of South Africa. The project, supported by the International Labour Organisation, attempts to assess the interaction between Government employment policies and black economic empowerment. The project objective was to develop strategies to facilitate greater labour market participation among the disadvantaged. 4. Capacity building of government functionaries in the management of livelihood planning projects: Maldives, Asian Development Bank (March April 2006): I was required to develop a tailor made capacity building course to prepare government officials who were in charge of career and livelihood planning projects in the Republic of Maldives with specific reference to the country s Employment Skills Training Project. The course was designed around the issues surrounding the Maldivian educational system, the existing labour market and how career guidance and counselling can be used to tackle these issues. 5. Employment Skills Training Project: Asian Development Bank (September 2006 May 2007): Funded by the Asian Development Bank, this project was executed for the Ministry of Higher Education and Employment. It required me to develop a social marketing strategy and a national career guidance and counselling system. My brief included curriculum development, training and capacity building. I developed a 110 hour certificate course (accredited by the Maldives Accreditation Board) and trained 72 teachers and youth workers on skills to deliver career counselling and livelihood planning workshops for Maldivian youth. 6 Jiva: The career counselling and livelihood planning project Consultant Project Director This is a capacity building project in the area of guidance and counselling for India funded by the Jacobs Foundation, Zurich. The project has two core objectives: The first is to the build capacity of 10 Master Counsellor Trainers, at the post graduate level. These master trainers will then train 1200 teachers and youth workers across India in the basic skills of counselling and livelihood planning. The project is designed to skill trainees to establish location specific career resource centres. My responsibilities included: Formulation of a career counselling and livelihood planning curriculum at the M.Phil level. Coordination of the training of master trainers. Management of an international team of instructors Development of a culture-relevant counselling programme, including all teaching-learning material. Supervision of the training of teachers and youth workers. Management of social marketing and advocacy efforts to influence government policy. TEACHING AND TRAINING Pre University Level (Higher Secondary) : I was instrumental in establishing a Department of Psychology for the Lawrence School, Lovedale. This is one of the few schools offering Psychology as a specialisation to higher secondary students in South India. I held this responsibility for a period of 5 years. Courses taught: General Psychology. Social Psychology. Developmental Psychology. Theories of Personality. Extent of responsibility for courses preparation: This was a curriculum prepared by the Central Board of Secondary Education. included the following: My responsibilities Developing teaching-learning strategy for transacting this curriculum Contributing to and supervising the development of course ware,and measures of learning outcomes. Establishing the psychology lab for the department. Setting examinations for theory and practicals, including a viva voce. Setting up the format for a small community based research for the paper on social psychology. Building social psychology into the school library. Training two other psychologists to take over the department. Bachelor s / Post Graduate Level (United Kingdom): ; 2006 ongoing) I am an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Portsmouth, visiting Senior Lecturer at the University of Canterbury Christchurch, United Kingdom ( Courses taught: I hold seminars and lectures in the areas of social, counseling and career psychology. Post Graduate Level (India): I am a visiting lecturer at departments of counselling / psychology affiliated to the Bangalore University, India and Visiting Professor at the Martin Luther University, Meghalaya. Courses taught and extent of responsibility: Name of course: Career Counselling: Social and Psychological Perspectives. This was a new course introduced by the Bangalore University. A clear curriculum was not available. My responsibilities included developing the course outline and the course ware, delivering the course and setting examinations. Name of course: Methods for social science research This is a module I conducted for Masters / doctoral students at the Martin Luther University. The course focused on the Mixed Methods approach to social science research. Masters/PhD students supervised Master s students: 3 students, as part of the career psychology course described above. These students went on to successfully submit their thesis as a part of the course requirements. M.Phil students: 7 students completing shortly. PhD students: 2 students at the level of formulation of the research design. One of these students has successfully completed her PhD. 5 students in their first year. Curriculum Development for Academic Programmes I have recently developed a curriculum at the MPhil level for a course in Counselling and Livelihood Planning. The course is a 2610 hour, 100 credit programme. 10 CAPACITY BUILDING AND TRAINING A significant aspect of my work includes conducting training programmes for government organisations, multinational companies, non governmental organisations and university departments. Some examples of recent projects in this field are: Training of 56 youth workers, student welfare officers and college lecturers from various parts of the country on Basic Skills for Counselling. This was a part of the Ford Foundation s Campus Diversity Initiative in India. This group has grown into a network of lay counsellors that is now able to function in a self-sustaining manner (2002). Training of 25 teachers in Rwanda, to address the psycho-social needs of young people who are survivors of the genocide (2003). Orientation to the interface between socio-cultural factors and occupational preferences for a group of 15 government officers from the Republic of Maldives (2006). Project leader for the Career Guidance and Social Marketing component of the Asian Development Bank s Employment Skills Training Project, in the Maldives (2007). Lead trainer for the Jiva Project a capacity building programme in the area of career counselling and livelihood planning. My role in these projects has included curriculum development, structuring of course material, execution of the training programmes as the lead trainer and supervision of other trainers in the team. I also make jewellery from natural objects. Trekking and rock climbing is something I enjoy and indulge in over most weekends. Wine making is an important hobby!
