2 THE CONTEXT OUR PROGRAM Post Graduate Diploma in Career Guidance and Counselling (PGDCGC) program at ACE Resource Centre is aimed at individuals wanting to work in the field of career counselling or those who are already working in a related field but lack the appropriate experience and expertise. The program runs year-round and is delivered in 3 semesters. Individuals working in the field of career and work counselling must be well equipped with information about current educational and occupational trends in order to make appropriate referrals and utilize assessment tools with their clients. This program exposes students to individual and group career counselling theory and practice. Through classroom study and supervised practicals, students would be prepared to deliver career counselling services that are professional, informed and current. Students learn to administer psychometric assessment tests, interpret test scores, give career recommendations based on test scores, prepare reports and profiles, advice and counsel students, adults and their parents on career planning, career change and school-to-work transition, as well as career change related to industries and special children institutions. The topics covered include computer skills and proficiency as well as technology helps in increasing the speed and the efficiency of the client as well as the students appearing for the tests. It also includes conducting research and surveys to understand the constant changing needs of the society and the release of the new courses. OUR EXPERTISE: ACEPL is in the field of Career Counseling since last 15 years. The course designer Ms. Salma Prabhu has to-date assessed, profiled and counselled more than students during this period. She has been the core committee member of the Post Graduate Diploma in Guidance & Counseling launched by SIES, Mumbai. The course was subsequently recognized by Mumbai University. She is a core panel member and visiting faculty for the new MA in Counseling program launched by Tata Institute Of Social Sciences (TISS). The expertise & experience gained during this practice has resulted in Ms. Prabhu career profiles being reputed for their accuracy, clarity and ease of understanding. Her articles on career & personal issues in leading Indian newspapers have been well appreciated by the population for their intrinsic guidance value. SAAM Marathi, a regional TV channel aired her live phone in Program MANA MAAZE for 40 episodes on Adolescent issues. The subject being TARUNAI wherein she answered queries on career as well as adolescent behaviour across social strata in Maharashtra state.

4 THE METHODOLOGY: Teaching would be through the following methodology: 1. Classroom Lectures: a. Duration 2 hrs per lecture. b. Teaching Aids: Power point Presentations & study notes. 2. Field Visits: Vocational Guidance Bureau + other Institutions conducting career guidance. 3. Visiting faculty of various Industries. 4. Role Plays for counselling skills 5. Written Assignments 6. Seminars on Career Guidance for schools delivered by students 7. Research projects. THE PRACTICE: 1. Students will make industry + school visits 2. They will have inhouse practicum as well as be placed at career guidance centres across Mumbai for practicum work. Profile preparation & recommendations will form a part of the practicum. 3. They will conduct exhibitions in the schools, colleges and institutions THE ASSESSMENTS: Students will be assessed based on the following: 1. Written Examination at the end of every semester 2. Completion of Assignments 3. Completion of Projects 4. Skills Assessment through Role Plays, report preparation and Seminars The evaluation of the same would be in grade points. THE DURATION: Starting in Third week of August the programme runs into three semesters. The programme would be twice a week for two hours in the first semester. The number of days would be three in the second and third semester. August to December January to March April to July THE TAKE AWAY: 1. The Counsellors will be prepared for a variety of employment settings, from individuals, school, institutions and corporate career services to community agencies. 2. They may find work as career counsellors, Recruiters, Corporate career planners, job search facilitators, career specialists or career information service providers. 3. The possibilities of placements are 100% as the need and awareness for career counselling is ever rising with hundreds of career options available in the present scenario. 4. The course ensures practical knowledge, experience and sensitivity to the work environment, understanding of the rising need and deliverance. 5. The counsellors will be equipped to fulfil the diverse needs and requirements of the students and the industry.
6 Career Counselling is also a valuable addition to your teaching, counselling, management, life-coaching, or community services qualification. It can improve parents' ability to help their children choose suitable career paths, or student's ability to plan their own career or career change. THE ELIGIBILITY: Graduates, Teachers, Counsellors, HR Professional, Social Workers, Community Health Professionals preferably with a degree in Social Sciences. The Centre is equipped with a Library which has a sufficient collection of Career Guidance and Counselling books and the students could borrow the books for reference. THE RESOURCE: 1. Besides the above there would be a course coordinator. CONCLUSION: There are many career counsellors in India. However, there are no specialized courses that equip the career counsellors. This has lead to individuals developing their own methodology to arrive at career recommendations. Many a times, the
7 tests used are also of not standardized. This leads to misguidance of the student leading to confusion. The course aims at bridging this gap. The course aims to create skilled and equipped career counsellors who follow a standardized methodology based on universally accepted assessment norms. The country s student population is appearing for std X is more than 1 cr. The number of counsellors in the country is 6000, of which only about 5% are equipped to do proper career counselling.
