1 AWARDS CRITERIA Honour Roll Honour Roll Status will be achieved when a student attains an 80% average of better, and with no mark below 60%, in the required courses necessary for a Bishop Grandin Diploma. The Honour Roll will be compiled twice a year: first semester final and second semester final. At anytime, students must have enrolled in courses that add up to a minimum of 11 credits per semester. Honour Roll Awards: Grade 10 and 11 honour roll certificates will be presented in TA in the following September. Grade 12 students will have the honour Roll certificates mailed to them in June of their graduating year. Honour Society: Students who have achieved Honour Roll Status in each reporting period throughout their three years of high school at Bishop Grandin High School (with the exception of the June reporting period of the graduating year) will be enrolled into the Honour Society and receive a medallion at the June Awards Ceremony. Subject Awards Subject Area Awards: An award is given to the student achieving the highest mark in all courses offered in each subject area. Highest marks for Diploma Courses are determined by using the School-Based Mark ONLY. Grade 10 and 11 will receive certificates in the Fall Awards Night. Grade 12 will receive certificates in the June Awards Night. St. Gerard Knights of Columbus Awards Grade 10 and 11 An award of $75 each to the highest Religion 15 and Religion 25 students by St. Gerard s Knights of Columbus. Presented along with the Religion 15 and 25 subject awards in the Fall Awards Night Ann-Marie Raymond Memorial Award An award consists of a trophy and an invitation (covering the costs) to a summer basketball camp for a junior girls basketball team member. The basketball coaches decide on the winner. Presented at awards ceremony. McInnis-Cartier Composite Science Award: An award presented to the student with honours academic standing in all 3 Senior Science courses and has been chosen as the best all-around Senior Science Student. Science Department will decide the winner. Presented at the end of all the Science Subject Awards in the Grade 12 Awards Night in June. 2 Awarded to PREVIOUS YEAR Grade 12 Top Academic Student. In 1873 the Earl of Dufferin, then serving as Governor General had a medal struck to reward scholastic merit among young people in Canada. Since that time, the Governor General s Medallion has been presented to the student in each Canadian high school who achieved the highest academic standing in their graduating year. Premier Citizenship Award: The Premier s Citizenship Award was set up in recognition of the Queen s Golden Jubilee. This award recognizes outstanding achievements in citizenship, leadership, community service, and volunteer work. It is awarded to one graduating student from each high school in Alberta on the recommendation of his or her school. Counselling Department will decide the winner, based on nominees for Bishop Grandin Citizen of the Year. Special Program Awards: AP Awards: The number of advanced placement courses and the final mark in those courses will be used to determine the recipient of the Advanced Placement Award in grade 10 and 11. The criteria for the Grade 12 Advanced Placement Award will include the highest average and the number of Advanced Placement exams written. These students will be honoured at their respective Awards ceremony. A list of what AP EXAMS the student has taken is need in the script. Note: All students who successful complete a Grade 12 AP program by writing the AP exam will be recognised at the AP Awards Luncheon in late May. Knowledge and Employability: The K and E program no longer exists. We now offer K and E courses. These subject awards are as follows: ELA 10-4, 20 and 30-4, Math 10-4, 20-4, Science 10-4, 20-4, SS 10-4, 20-4 These students will be honoured at their respective Awards ceremony. The K and E teachers decide the winners. Colin MacIsaac Integrative Educational Award: An award for a Grade 12 student in Educational Support II who showed the most improvement in his / her three years in school. Presented in the Grade 12 Awards Night in June. Winner is decided by the ES II Teacher. Educational Support I and II Awards: An award for the most improved Educational Support I and II Students. The June Award is for a Grade 12 students in ES I and ES II students. The Fall Award is for a Grade 10/11 students in ES I and ES II. Winners are decided by ES I and ES II Teachers. 3 Top Academic Average Grade 12 Criteria: English 30-1, Social 30-1, Math 30-1, and two 30 level Science Courses, Take the highest marks from Semester 1 Final marks and Semester 2 Mid Term Marks. Grade final marks for semester 1 must be checked in History as this includes the Diploma Exam results. Check Grade 10 and grade 11 courses and include any 30 level courses taken. Select a Male student and a Female student for Top Academic Awards. Each student will receive a plaque - keeper. However, the trophy will only have the name of the HIGHEST student between the two. The HIGHEST student will have his/her plague engraved as Grade 12 Top Academic Award, while the other person will receive a plaque engraved as Grade 12 Top Male / Female Award. Each recipient receives $500 for a total of $1000. Chinook Rotary Club Award and Scholarship: The Chinook Rotary club presents this award to the Grade 12 Top Academic Student. The student gets a $500 scholarship. There is a trophy. Grade 11 Criteria: English 20-1,Social 20-1, Math 20-1, and two 20 level Science Courses, Take the highest marks from Semester 1 and Semester 2 Final Marks. Grade 11 final marks should be checked at the end of June. Check Grade 10 courses and include any 20 level courses taken. Mention the actual highest average in the script. Grade 10 Criteria: English 10-1, Social 10-1, Math 10C, and Science 10. Take the highest marks from Semester 1 and Semester 2 Final Marks. Grade 10 final marks should be checked at the end of June. Mention the actual highest average in the script. St Gerard Knights of Columbus Awards Grade 12 An award of $150 to the highest Religion 35 student. Presented in the Academic and Scholarships portion of the Grade 12 Awards Night in June. Merit Contractors Association Award: The award consists of a certificate of achievement and $75 cash. This award recognizes individual achievement, promotes construction as a career, and encourages co-operation between education and industry. To qualify for the award, a Grade 12 student must achieve top standing and demonstrate a high interest in the course, demonstrate leadership qualities and a co-operative attitude with fellow students and teachers. 4 An award of $500 goes to the Highest Social 30-2 student who will attend a post-secondary institution in the fall. Presented in the Academic and Scholarships portion of the Grade 12 Awards Night in June. Citizenship Awards Student nominees will be chosen from applications to the counselling department. All six students will receive a certificate stating they are a Citizenship Nominee A vote will be taken among the staff to decide on two winners (one male and one female). Each winner will receive $500 for a total of $1000 from Coke and their names engraved on trophies. Always presented last in the Academic and Scholarships portion of the Grade 12 Awards Night in June. St. Joseph ESL Scholarship St. Joseph is the patron Saint of Immigrants. This scholarship is sponsored by the Holy Spirit Knights of Columbus in the amount of $ This award goes to and ESL students who is continuing their education (Bow Valley College, St. Anne s or college or University), and has contributed to their school, parish or community. Student is also in need of funds for continuing their education. Presented at the Grade 12 awards. Jacob Williamson Bursary Named after John Williamson s son. $500 bursary from 2011 through to 2015 by an anonymous donor. There can be up to two recipients in one year, $250 to each recipient. This award goes to a special needs student who has demonstrated endurance and persistence on overcoming these special needs. Student has participated in some aspect of the K and E program. Student is in financial need, and preference given to a student with a love of animals, birds or the environment. Activities Awards (Grade 12 Awards Night in June only) Valedictorian Award: An award that goes to the valedictorian. A BIOGRAPHY of the valedictorian is needed in the script. The winner gets $500 and a Trophy. Theatre Participation Award: An award that goes to an outstanding Grade 12 actor. A BIOGRAPHY of the winner is needed in the script. The Drama teacher decides on the winner. Certificate is given. Speech and Debate Awards: An award is given to the student who has excelled and promoted speech and the other for a student who has demonstrated leadership in the debate club. This is an optional award that is given when there was an exceptionally good season. BIOGRAPHY of the winner(s) is needed in the script. The Speech and debate Coaches decide on the winners. 5 Music Awards (Grade 12 Awards Night in June only) Certificates for Thora Budda Awards. Male and Female Athlete of the Year: (Grade 12 Awards Night in June only) Top grade 12 male and grade 12 female athletes are recognized with a trophy. The awards committee also gets the keeper plaques. The coaches decide the winners.
