1 IOP Curriculum Module I- Addiction the Disease The mission of the "Addiction the Disease" module is to educate clients about the reality of their disease, what it has done to them physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Clients will also gain perspective on what they can expect as they travel down the road of recovery. In the first session clients explores the disease model of addiction and how it effects the brain. Clients will explore the hereditary characteristics of addiction. The primary focus of this session is to raise awareness in the client of how their addiction may have effected their thought process and the road ahead them. Session two is an in depth discussion on Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS). Clients are introduced to PAWS and begin to learn about the symptoms. Clients explore the patterns of withdrawal along with healthy ways to be aware of and manage and possibly avoid the symptoms of PAWS. In session three clients learn about what their family, loved ones and the others in their lives have experienced and are still experiencing as a result of their disease. This session also educates them on ways to cope with the many stresses that will come with reunification. In session four clients explore "Distorted Thinking" and how inaccurate thoughts reinforce negative thinking and or emotions. The purpose is to gain awareness of when their thoughts may be leading them down the wrong road and to develop ways to redirect themselves or avoid the thoughts all together. In the first session clients thoroughly breakdown "The Promises" of AA and how they play in their lives. Clients also experience an exercise where they write a letter to themselves that they will receive approximately sixty days after completion of treatment. The letter is their voice giving them encouragement to get back on track, a reminder from them what they went through to get them into treatment to begin with and can also serve as a booster for them should the letter find them doing well in their recovery.

2 Module 2 - Thoughts & Feelings The mission of the "Thoughts and Feelings" module is for client to learn to identify and cope with all of their feelings in a healthy manner rather then avoid and suppress them. Many positive and negative feelings are explored with strong concentration on five of the most dangerous feelings in early recovery anger, fear, stress, guilt and shame. In the first session clients explore life without wearing the "Mask" they have been accustomed to wearing, they will learn 8 steps for managing feelings. In session two clients explore anger and stress and learn to identify situations that are very stressful and upsetting and learn to develop coping strategies for handling those situations. In session three clients explore the close to the heart feelings of guilt, shame and fear and learn strategies for working through those emotions and become able to move forward in their lives. In the first session clients explore the meaning of acceptance and more closely what it means for someone in recovery. Clients also explore the opposite of acceptance, avoidance. They will measure the cost of avoidance in their own lives and compare it the benefits of practicing acceptance. Clients will experience an exercise call "Feelings in a Hat" which will give them practice developing an action plan for dealing with life's challenges.

3 Module 3 - Communication The mission of the "Communication" module is for clients to learn how to communicate their feeling to themselves as well as the world in a way that promotes their growth while avoiding hurting others. Clients will explore communication styles when interacting with the world as well as take an in depth look at how they communicate with themselves. Clients will take a close look at the "stories" they live by and learn to not hold them so tight that they keep them stuck. In the first session clients explore the benefit of having healthy boundaries in all areas of their lives and the dangers of having boundaries that are too loose or too rigid. In session two clients explore the three basic communication styles of aggressive, passive and assertive. Clients explore in detail how the assertive style of communication is most effective as it says to the world "I think I am important and I think you are important too." In session three clients learn to identify the different ways in which they communicate with themselves and about themselves to the world. Clients learn to become aware of conversations that are "Prison Sentences." Client learn how these types of sentences, words and stories can keep them locked up and living in the past and how they can be very self-limiting. In session three clients learn to identify the different "stories" they tell themselves, about themselves and how their experiences are just the stories of their lives and don't define who they are. They explore ways to stop holding on the stories of their lives so tightly. In session four clients continue the discussion on Holding Stories Lightly and experience an exercise with beads and string known as the "Who Am I" exercise to bring perspective about the stories of their lives and the role they play in telling who they are.

4 Module 4 - Recovery Management The mission of the "Recovery Management" module is to educate clients on how to prepare for and maintain their lives in recovery after treatment is complete. Clients will gain knowledge of 12 Step meetings, how to identify and acquire a sponsor, learn to identify and avoid triggers. Clients will also learn to develop coping strategies as well as explore how to cope with family life after treatment. In session two clients will gain knowledge of 12 Step meetings, how to identify and acquire a sponsor. They will learn about the many different 12 step meetings available to them. In session two clients identify their motivation for entering into treatment and how it compares to their motivation for staying in treatment. Client also will identify what they are doing daily to support and strengthen their recovery and learn how to track Those "mooring lines" to keep them from drifting away from what has been working for them. Session three is an in depth look at what their person triggers are dealing with people, places and things and developing a strong plan of action to cope with the triggers including their peer support system, groups and counselors to name a few. In session four clients learn about the "stages of change" and will identify what stage they are in. Clients will also develop a Recovery Tools Checklist to track their daily use of their new found tools and coping skills and to help alert them when they may be getting off course. In the first session clients learn about the "Recovery Steps," they also explore how to identify relapse set-ups, identify craving stages and urges and develop a plan to cope with them moving forward.
