1 2014 Georgia Certified Addiction Counselor 180-Hour Preparation Course COURSE DESCRIPTION: This education program is designed to provide the coursework necessary for those seeking the certification as an Addiction Counselor through either Georgia Addiction Counselors Association or Alcohol and Drug Abuse Certification Board of Georgia. ADDICTION COUNSELOR COMPETENCIES Addiction Counseling Practice Domains GOAL: Define, review, and practice Addiction Counselor Competencies for effective substance abuse treatment, comprised of the 8 practice domains for substance abuse clinical services. Relapse Prevention; Recovery Promotion - January 17 & 18, Understand terms and phases related to preventing relapse and promoting recovery 2. Review and understand the Developmental Model of Recovery (DMR) 3. Using a case study, discuss strategies that can help clients cope with stuck points using RADAR or ESCAPE 15 P.A.W.S.: Addressing Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome- February 7, Understand the phases of Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (P.A.W.S.) 2. Learn about the effect of PAWS as related to persons in early recovery 3. Practice strategies to help clients when they experience P.A.W. Evidence Based Treatment to Address a Co- Occurring Disorder February 8, Provide general overview of the specialization of Co- Occurring Disorders 2. Gain an understanding of successful COD treatment programming 3. Learn criteria for integrated programming Treatment Planning and Documentation March 7, To define, review the purpose and components necessary of, and formulate a comprehensive treatment plan 2. Learn how treatment plans support client retention and improved outcomes in treatment 3. To review accepted principles for documentation and client record management 4. Practice / Develop with a Treatment Plan using a case scenario

Understand the involvement of the Service Coordinator with the multidisciplinary treatment team 3. Explore values and biases that may enhance or inhibit the provision of effective Service Coordination services. 4. Learn about transference and counter- transference, and appropriate strategies to address it 3. Examine stressors that contribute to counselor burn- out 4. Build an action plan for positive self- care strategies Addressing Compassion Fatigue May 3, To understand the symptoms of compassion fatigue and interventions to be proactive for oneself 2. To learn about the difference between professional burnout and compassion fatigue 3. To develop a plan / resources necessary to maintain ethical balance 15 DIVERSE POPULATIONS and UNIQUE CONSIDERATIONS GOAL: Define, review and understand clinical issues in substance abuse treatment, including working with clients from diverse populations and with clients experiencing diverse situations.
