Elementary Report Cards An Overview of the Changes on the Elementary Report Cards Grades 2-5

Why Change the Report Card? O A student report card is one of many ways that the school communicates with parents regarding their child s academic, social and emotional progress. O In order to be valuable, the report card must accurately reflect the content and rigor of the skills that are being taught in the classroom. O With the updates to our state standards as well as district curricula and programs, it was necessary to revise the report card to encompass these changes.

What s New in Grade 2? A Closer Look at the Second Grade Report Card

The Grading System O Rather than earn letter grades for their core subject areas such as Reading, Writing and Math, second grade students will earn the following: O = Outstanding (90-100) S = Satisfactory (80-89) N = Needs Improvement (70-79) U = Unsatisfactory (69 and below) O This is the same key that will be used to grade specials and other courses in second grade.

The Subset Skills The Grading System O To better align our report cards with what we teach, the subjects of Reading, Writing and Math are each comprised of different skills. O Students will earn one of the following marks in each of these skill areas in order to provide parents with more detailed feedback about their child. * = Skill is at or above grade level expectation = Skill is in need of improvement NA = Skill has not yet been addressed (not applicable)

Final Math Represents and solves problems using addition and subtraction O * Demonstrates fluency of addition facts * Demonstrates fluency of subtraction facts * Understands place value and applies concepts to addition and subtraction * Represents and interprets data and graphs * Reasons with shapes and their attributes NA Works with time and money * Understands concepts of measurement NA

Look and See What s New in Grades 5, 4 and 3 A Closer Look at the Report Card Changes in Third, Fourth and Fifth Grades

The Grading System Beginning in third grade students will receive traditional grades in all core subjects, including Science and Social Studies. A+ (97-100) A (93-96) A- (90-92) B+ (87-89) B (83-86) B- (80-82) C+ (77-79) C (73-77) C- (70-72) D (65-60) F (0-64)

The Subset Skills The Grading System O Similar to second grade, the subjects of Reading, Writing and Math, as well as Science and Social Studies, are comprised of one or more subset skills. O Students will receive one of the following marks in each of these areas in order to provide parents with more detailed feedback about their child s progress. 1 = Skill is at or above grade level expectation 2 = Skill is in need of improvement NA = Skill has not yet been addressed (not applicable)

Final Writing B- Generates ideas 1 Produces clear and coherent writing across genres 1 Elaborates on and incorporates details to support key ideas Incorporates grade-level vocabulary into writing across content areas Demonstrates command of writing conventions, grammar and mechanics Strengthens writing by using revision strategies 2 Demonstrates writing stamina 1 Uses grade appropriate spelling 1

Reviewing Reading A Look at How Reading is Evaluated in Grades 3, 4 and 5

Reader s Workshop O In September of 2014 the district launched its Reader s Workshop program. O In Reader s Workshop, students are assessed and assigned an Independent Reading Level which reflects what students can read and comprehend without assistance. O The new report card will provide the Independent Reading Level Expectation per marking period as well as your child s actual Independent Reading Level.

The Report Card and Reader s Workshop The Report Card Key Grade 3 Independent Reading Level Benchmark 1 st 2 nd 3 rd 4 th N O O/P P/Q Your child s reading level is NOT factored into his or her reading grade. The subset skills are assessed on how well your child performs based on the level on which he or she is currently reading. However, we feel it is important for parents to know both the grade level expectation as well as their own child s performance level. Third Grade Reading Current Reading Level Reading B+ Reads with accuracy, fluency & 1 expression Demonstrates literal comprehension 1 Demonstrates inferential comprehension 2 Demonstrates reading stamina 1 Knows and applies phonics and word analysis skills in decoding Understands grade level and content area 2 vocabulary Applies reading strategies 1 Writes effective responses to texts 1 M 1

Specials A Closer Look at How Specials Are Graded Second through Fifth Grade

Specials In second through fifth grade, students will earn either an O, S, N or U for their work in their specials courses. O Art O Computers O Library O Music O Physical Education O Spanish (grades 3, 4 and 5) O Instrumental (grades 4 and 5)

Specials All specials courses, with the exception of Spanish, include subset skills, just as the core subjects do. O Art, Library, Physical Education, Computers, and Music all contain the same subset skills. Art O Demonstrates an understanding of skills and 1 concepts Participates in activities 1 Follows directions, rules and procedures 1 O This is designed to provide parents with greater insight into their child s progress in these important areas of instruction. *NOTE: Subset skills for specials classes in second grade are marked by a check mark or an asterisk.

Social Development/ Work and Study Habits A Closer Look at The Whole Child

Social Development/ Work and Study Habits O Minimal changes have been made to this section of the report card. O At all grade levels, students will earn an O, S, N, or U to denote their progress in these categories. O As in the past, teachers will also continue to provide parents with a short narrative explaining how their child is doing overall throughout the school year.

Saving the Best for Last A Look At Hawthorne s Elementary Report Cards and Technology

Technological Advancements O This year the third through fifth grade report cards will be completed online. It is our hope that grades K-2 will be completed on the computer beginning in the school year. O Although parents will still receive a hard copy of the report card, we hope to have online access available for parents of children in grades 3-5 in the Spring of The November report card will not be available online.

A Look Ahead What About Kindergarten and First Grade Report Cards?

Kindergarten and First Grade We are continuing to revise our kindergarten and first grade report cards and the district will keep parents updated as to any changes. We appreciate your patience as we work to put together a cohesive document that addresses all of the developmentally appropriate benchmarks for our youngest learners.
