3 MANDATE OF INTERNATIONAL OFFICE The International Office (IO) coordinates exchanges for all the academic units, except : Telfer School of Management Faculty of Medicine

4 Who can participate in the exchange program with the University of Ottawa? A student from one of our partner institutions that has been nominated by his/her home institution A student admitted in a regular program of studies at the undergraduate or graduate level and registered full time at the time of application to the exchange program A student with a cumulative average of at least 70% or the equivalent A student that meets the language proficiency requirements (refer to website guidelines) For students requiring a TOEFL or IELTS, official results must be submitted at the time of application

5 CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION Students must have completed a minimum of one academic university year and provide an official transcript by March 31 at the latest. Students must have paid all tuition fees at their home institutions, as per the policies and guidelines of that institution. Students are responsible to cover the costs of their travel, accommodation, personal expenses and mandatory university health insurance plan (UHIP).

6 CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION Students are not authorized to register in any research or thesis writing activities during their studies at the University of Ottawa. Students are not permitted to take part in any internship during their studies at the University of Ottawa.

7 CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION Students must be proficient in the language that they wish to complete their studies in at the University of Ottawa. Official proof of proficiency is required Accepted proof of language proficiency: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) Minimum scores required: Faculties Paper-based Test (TOEFL PBT) Computerbased Test (TOEFL CBT) Internetbased Test (TOEFL IBT) Engineering ** Arts, Social Sciences Sciences, Health Sciences Common Law (English)/ Faculty of Law* ** 600 * ** **With a minimum score of 24 in the ''WRITING'' section (Internet version)

8 LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY *** Civil Law students (from France, Belgium and other French-speaking countries) who wish to take Common Law courses in English must have a minimum TOEFL score of 600 (250 for Computer-based, 100 for Internet-based). IELTS (International English Language Testing Systems) Students must obtain a minimum overall score of 7, with a minimum score of 6.5 in the Writing section. IMPORTANT: Language Proficiency tests administered by home institutions, TOEFLI (Institutional TOEFL) and TOEIC, for example, are NOT accepted.

9 LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY Granted exemptions*: Students registered in the following programs : Translation English Lettres anglaises Litérature anglaise Langue anglaise (ex: LEA Langues étrangères appliquées, option anglais) *Students are exempt from providing proof of language proficiency, unless they wish to pursue their studies in a different discipline

10 What you need to know BEFORE applying to the exchange program

11 Sessional Dates Fall Session: Beginning of September to the end of December (Dec 23) Mandatory welcome orientation session that will take place during the first week of September Winter Session: Beginning of January to end of April Mandatory welcome orientation session that will take place during the first week of January NOTE: No exceptions will be granted. All incoming exchange students must be on campus and present at the mandatory orientation session. University of Ottawa Sessional Dates:

12 ACADEMIC GRADES AND CREDITS A passing grade at the University of Ottawa is generally 50% (D) Credits obtained at the University of Ottawa for completed courses are transferred by the home institution and must be considered towards the required courses for diploma/degree completion. Incoming exchange students are prohibited from registering to our courses as auditors (AUD). As a general rule, one course is equivalent to 3 credits at the University of Ottawa (6 ECTS). The workload for one session is equal to 15 credits (30 ECTS).

13 GRADING SYSTEM Incoming students do not receive a diploma/degree from the University of Ottawa. Incoming students will receive an official transcript from the University of Ottawa (sent directly to the partner university). 16 COURSE SELECTION Registration Form Special Student with course selection To be submitted as soon as the schedule of offered courses is available online (usually around mid-april) Must be submitted according to the provided instructions and before the indicated deadline. 17 COURSE SELECTION Course selection must be according to field of studies and current university level (undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate) that correspond to the home institution s registration. Certain courses require one or more prerequisites. If the student has not already completed these prerequisites at their home university, registration to these courses will be refused. Students are allowed to select courses from a maximum of two Students are allowed to select courses from a maximum of two faculties (Arts, Social Sciences, Sciences, Health Sciences, Engineering, Law, Graduate and Postgraduate Studies).

18 COURSE SELECTION Students are not permitted to register in courses with course codes ADM or MBA, or in any courses offered in the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Education* (some agreements restricted to Education are available). Student must register as a full time student. A full time session at the undergraduate level consists of 12 to 15 credits per session (4-5 courses) and a full time session at the graduate level consists of 6 to 9 credits per session (2-3 courses). Students cannot register as auditors (AUD) If you have not submitted your official proof of English proficiency with your application, you will not be allowed to register for courses instructed in English.

19 CANADIAN UNIVERSITY SYSTEM Undergraduate Studies: Degree: Bachelor (general or honours) Length: 3 or 4 years Course codes: 1000 to 4000 (1XXX being 1 st year courses) Graduate Studies: Degree: Master Length: 2 years Course codes: 5000 and 6000 Graduate Studies: Degree: PhD Length: 3 years and more Course codes: 7000 to 9000

20 CANADIAN UNIVERSITY SYSTEM To register in graduate courses (Masters) : - must have a university degree equivalent to the Canadian Honours degree in the field of study, at the time of submitting their application file - Students who do not have a university degree but who have completed a minimum of four years of studies at their home institution or at another higher education institution can make a preliminary course selection at the Master s level. The preliminary course selection will be sent to the concerned department for approval. To register in postgraduate courses (Doctorate/ PhD): - must have a university degree equivalent to the Canadian Master s degree in the field of study - Students who do not have a university degree but who have completed a minimum of six years of studies at their home institution or at another higher education institution can make a preliminary course selection at the Doctorate level. The preliminary course selection will be sent to the concerned department for approval.

21 DEADLINE There is only one deadline to submit completed applications for nominated students wanting to participate in an exchange for the academic year, for the Fall session and/or the Winter session= March 31. Candidates application should be sent as soon as they are completed, in one submission. Please note that submitting an application does not guaranty admission to the exchange program. NOTE: The International Office of the University of Ottawa only accepts completed applications that are sent directly from the International Office of our partner universities.
