1 Course Information Course Description: OGEECHEE TECHNICAL COLLEGE One Joe Kennedy Boulevard Statesboro GA SYLLABUS MGMT 2115 Human Resource Management This course is designed as an overview of the Human Resource Management (HRM) function and of the manager and supervisors role in managing the career cycle from organizational entry to exit. It acquaints the student with the authority, responsibility, functions, and problems of the human resource manager, with an emphasis on developing familiarity with the real world applications required of employers and managers who increasingly are in partnership with HRM generalists and specialists in their organizations. Topics include: strategic human resource management, contemporary issues in HRM: ethics, diversity and globalization; the human resource/supervisor partnership; human resource planning and productivity; job description analysis, development, and design: recruiting, interviewing, and selecting employees; performance management and appraisal systems; employee training and development: disciplinary action and employee rights; employee compensation and benefits; labor relations and employment law; and technology applications in HRM. Students can find computer labs in the library and around the OTC campus, so don t wait until the last minute. Assessment Distribution of Grades: Grading Scale: Final Exam: Work Ethics Information: Students are encouraged to use any good writer s reference such as those assigned in English 1010 and 1012 courses at Ogeechee Technical College. Refer to the Online Writing Lab at Purdue University for assistance and guidance on how to cite APA style as well as the rules of grammar and punctuation. The times and dates will be determined once computer lab availability is established. There are few excuses for missing an exam. If there is a problem, be sure to contact your instructor immediately. The Technical College System of Georgia instructs and evaluates students on work ethics in all programs of study. Ten work ethics

3 3 traits have been identified and defined as essential for student success: appearance, attendance, attitude, character, communication, cooperation, organizational skills, productivity, respect, and teamwork. As a student in this Ogeechee Technical College course, you will be expected to adhere to the highest standards of these 10 character traits in your behavior as well as your coursework. Classroom Policies Attendance: Attendance is vital for success in this course. To receive credit for this course a student must attend 90% of the scheduled instructional time. This means that you have two absences. To avoid an absence, students must log into the actual course on ANGEL (not just the homepage including all courses) at least three times per week and actually complete a task during each login. If you are contributing to the weekly discussions appropriately, you are already fulfilling your attendance requirement. Any student attending less than 90% of the scheduled instructional time will receive a "W" for the course if removed from the course before the semester midterm. After the semester midterm, any student who has maintained a passing grade within a course will receive a 'WP' for the course when attending less than 90% of the scheduled instructional time. If, however, the student has not maintained a passing grade, he or she will receive a 'WF' for the course. Attendance is counted starting the first week of each term. If you are dropped from a class there will be no appeal process. Ensure that you communicate with your instructor if there is a problem that is keeping you from coming to class! In addition, any student who does not show up for class or log into ANGEL for a consecutive period of 7 days will be dropped from the course. Online Discussions: Throughout the semester, students will have class discussions via ANGEL as part of their responsibilities. Discussion board postings must be done during the scheduled week. Posts to the discussion board after the Monday (please remember that our week goes from Tuesday to Monday) at the end of that particular week will not be accepted. Within each week that includes an online class discussion, you will be required to write an initial post to each weekly discussion by Thursday at 11:59 p.m. EST. You also must respond to your classmates by that following Monday at 11:59 p.m. EST. The discussion rubric provided in ANGEL will provide more guidance on how your discussions are graded. Late

4 initial posts will receive an automatic 15-point deduction through Monday and posts missing appropriate references will receive an automatic 10-point deduction. 4 Course Withdrawal: Late Work: Missed Exams: Absences: Extra Credit: Students may withdraw from a course without academic penalty until the midpoint of the term (as stated in the Academic Calendar and in the OTC Catalog and Student Handbook). By withdrawing before the midpoint of the term, the student is automatically assigned a grade of W, which does not affect term or cumulative grade point average. Grades of W will affect satisfactory academic progress for financial aid purposes. Students who stop attending class(es) without formally withdrawing risk earning a final grade of F, which will appear on the academic transcript. Refer to the OTC Catalog and Student Handbook for further details. Late work will not be accepted in this course. If there is a legitimate emergency that is communicated immediately with documentation, your situation will be considered on a case-bycase basis. It is the student s responsibility to keep up with the work, submit the work on time, and submit the work to the appropriate place. It is understood that students can go through traumatic personal events throughout the course of a semester. I reserve the right to modify this policy on an individual basis. You must take all exams during the designated times. You will not be able to access these after the deadline, and there is no makeup. Be sure to contact me in advance about any issues. The following activities will not be counted as absences if substantiating documentation is submitted to the instructor BEFORE such event occurs: Military Service/Training Jury Summons Whether other absences are counted as excused or not will be considered on a case to case basis. Excused absences will not be used as a basis for withdrawing a student from class; however, a student who is granted an excused absence will be responsible for completing all work assigned by the instructor in order to successfully complete the course. Additionally, any class activities cannot be made up for any absence including excused absences. Any other reason for missing class, other than those listed above, will be counted as an absence and subject to the 90% policy. There is not currently any scheduled extra credit, but I will drop your lowest reading quiz and assignment/ discussion grade to make up for that rough week you may have had.

Any student found to have engaged in academic misconduct such as cheating, plagiarism, or collusion is subject to disciplinary sanctions as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct detailed in the OTC Catalog and Student Handbook. The term plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, the use, by paraphrase or direct quotation, of the published or unpublished work of another person without full and clear acknowledgment. The term collusion includes, but is not limited to, the unauthorized collaboration with any other person in preparing work offered for academic credit. Students are advised that faculty routinely use turnitin.com both to prevent plagiarism and to assist in verifying when/if it has occurred. The Ogeechee Technical College Library provides students access to books, periodicals, ebooks, GALILEO, and other electronic resources. Students are encouraged to use the Library for class research projects. Help with research and projects is available within the Library. Computers are available for student use. A student ID is required in order to check out any materials from the Library or to use a computer. A self-service, black and white copier is also available. Hours of operation are Monday-Thursday from 7am until 9:30pm. The materials on this course web site are only for the use of students enrolled in this course for purposes associated with this course and may not be retained or further disseminated.
