1 AP U.S. History Summer Reading Assignment The AP U.S. History course is designed to be a challenging course, equivalent to a college freshmen level history course. To prepare for this course you are required to do summer readings along with a written assignment. You will read the first four chapters of The American People and start a notebook. To help you with the notebook we will provide you with questions for considerations as you read each chapter. The written assignment (thematic essay) will be turned in no later than September 10, THE ESSAYS MUST BE TYPED! They will be graded. Your notebooks will also be checked and will also be due no later than September 10, ( This site will help you with the Cornell Method. Reading Assignments: Chapter One Three Worlds Collide : After reading this chapter, you should be able to 1) Locate and briefly describe the Native American mound builders of the Ohio and Mississippi river valleys, the Pueblo dwellers of the southwest, the Woodland Indians of the East coast 2) Describe Native American attitudes towards and beliefs about the natural world, wealth, community, family, and men and women. 3) Name and locate three West African kingdoms between the fifth and fourteenth centuries and describe West African beliefs about family, religion, and social organization. 4) Explain the political, economic, and religious changes in early modern Europe that led to the exploration and eventual settlement of North America 5) Locate on the map the names and routes of the most significant Iberian, English, French and Dutch explorers and conquerors in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. 6) Describe the impact of the European conquest of the North Americans Native American Indian population. 7) Compare and contrast the values lifestyles of the three worlds-red, white, and black that met in the Americas early the sixteenth century.

2 8) Evaluate the outcomes of that collision for each world. What do you think and feel about those outcomes? 9) Compare and contrast the cultures of Spain and England, and their motives for settling the Americas? Chapter Two Colonizing a Continent : After reading this chapter you should be able to 1) Locate the various distinct settlements on the map of the Atlantic coast, and in particular Jamestown and Chesapeake Bay tobacco area, Roanoke Island, Charleston, Plymouth,Boston and Massachusetts Bay, New York, the Hudson River,Delaware, the Connecticut, and James River, and Philadelphia and the greater Pennsylvania settlement. 2) Describe the changing population,social patterns, daily life of the Chesapeake tobacco coast in the seventeenth century 3) Describe the beliefs, social patterns, and the character of village life of the New England Puritans in the early seventeenth century Massachusetts. 4) Outline the major features of the economic and social life in seventeenth century New York and Carolina 5) Describe Quaker beliefs and the efforts to build a peaceable kingdom in William Penn s settlement in Pennsylvania 6) Compare and contrast the reasons and motivations for the settlement of each of the five main colonies and describe the relationship of each of the five settlements with the Native Americans of the region. 7) Reconstruct and compare the essentials of daily life, including the lives of women, in each of the five settlements in the seventeenth century 8) Discuss whether you think utopian idealism or economic necessity was more important motivation in the settlement and development of the English colonies Chapter Three Mastering the New World After reading this chapter you should be able to: 1) Analyze how the conflicts between Englishmen and Africans and Native Americans, among Englishmen themselves, and between the British and other European nations changed the relations among white, black and red people in the New World

3 2) Show the most important effects of the Glorious Revolution in England and of European national rivalries on the colonies in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. 3) Explain why the late seventeenth century has been described as a period of great instability and change in American history. 4) Describe the slave trade and explain three ways in which the presence of black slaves altered the direction of American society 5) Give three reasons for the transformation of the Chesapeake labor force in the late seventeenth century. 6) Discuss the varying characteristics of slavery within English, French and Spanish America. Describe cultural features of African Americans in the seventeenth century. 7) Describe the course and consequences of King Philip s War in New England and Bacon s Rebellion in Virginia. 8) Explain the key ideas England used to organize the empire. How was control affected by the glorious Revolution? 9) State three basic differences between the French and English settlements in North America. Why did France and England complete control of North America? Chapter Four The Maturing Colonial Society After reading this chapter you should be able to: 1) Compare and contrast the development and maturing of English society in the farming northern colonies, in the plantations south, and in colonial cities. 2) Discuss the foundations of colonial political structures and ideology, including what colonist meant by a political balance of power and how it matched the reality of Whig Ideology and local political arrangements 3) Analyze how the changing mixture of ethnic, racial, religious, and regional settlements in North America, as well as class differences, provided awkward incongruity and threats of social unrest in various societies of the New World. 4) Name the major immigrant groups coming to the colonies in the early eighteenth century, describe their social background, find their destinations on the map, and summarize their relative opportunities for social and economic advancement. 5) Describe the cultural changes of the interior Indian tribes as a result of their contact with French, Spanish, and English settlements on economic, social, and domestic life, on their

4 relationships to the environment; on political organization; and on intertribal tensions. 6) Describe northern farm society and its most important social characteristics and problems including family life and the ways in which the roles and rights of women changed in the colonies. 7) Give an account of the profound social transition of the Upper South, characterize the social and political nature of southern gentry,and detail the social and economic differences between tobacco and rice coast and the back country 8) Describe the urban social structure, including the merchant s pivotal role and the work patterns and attitudes of urbanites. 9) Explain the major events and message of the Great Awakening, including it comparative impact on New England and the southern colonies and its effect on colonial political life. Thematic Essay 1: Choose ONE of the following essays and write concise FIVE paragraph response to the question. 1) Compare and contrast the economies, geography, and climate, mortality rates, sex ratios, and family relationships of the New England and the southern colonies. In which of the two regions would you have preferred to live in? Why? 2) Compare and contrast the reasons and motivations for settlement of each of the five main colonies. 3) In your opinion, which three of the twelve colonies founded in the seventeenth century made most significant contributions to the perennial American values of democratic self government, educational opportunity, religious toleration, social plurality and economic materialism? Explain your choices. 4) Analyze the and development of slavery in Britain s North American colonies in the period 1607 to 1777 Thematic Essay 2: Choose ONE of the following essays and write a concise 5 paragraph response to the question. 5) Compare the ways in which religion shaped the development of colonial society (to1764) in TWO of the following regions.
