1 FANs 216, Product/Technical Bulletin HE-6300 Issue Date 0499 HE-6300 Series Wall-mount Humidity Transmitter with Temperature Sensor The HE-6300 houses both a humidity transmitter and a temperature sensor in a single, wall-mounted unit. The humidity sensor is capable of measuring humidity over the entire range of 0 to 100% RH, and its All- Polymer construction increases resistance to corrosion in HVAC environments. Three temperature sensors are available: the HE (a thin-film nickel sensor), the HE (a solid-state planar silicon sensor), and the HE (a thin-film platinum sensor). The unit can be powered with 12 to 30 VDC or 20 to 30 VAC and features a user-selectable humidity output of 0 to 10 VDC or 0 to 5 VDC. 2 Product Overview The HE-6300 provides independent humidity and temperature signals for use in a wide range of sensing applications. The HE-6300 Series offers models suitable for use with most HVAC controllers. The HE-6300 is a durable, yet cost-effective solution for room humidity sensing. It is factory calibrated, easy to install, has no minimum airflow requirement, and has the capability to recover after loss of power or saturation, thus reducing commissioning and maintenance costs. The humidity element is capable of sensing over the entire range of 0 to 100% RH. Its All-Polymer construction provides resistance to corrosion in typical HVAC environments. Possible applications include situations where sensing a wide range of humidity is desired; where there are low concentrations of corrosive vapors, such as in hospitals or pool areas; or in situations where humidity sensing is critical, such as in libraries and museums. IMPORTANT: The HE-6300 is designed for use only in conjunction with operating controls. Where an operating control failure would result in personal injury and/or loss of property, it is the responsibility of the installer to add devices (safety, limit controls) or systems (alarm, supervisory) that protect against, or warn of control failure. The temperature sensor is isolated from and operates independently of the humidity sensor. Three models are available: HE , which has a thin-film nickel temperature sensor. It provides 1000 ohms of resistance at 70 F (21 C). HE , which has a solid-state, planar silicon temperature sensor. It provides 1035 ohms of resistance at 77 F (25 C). HE , which has a thin-film, platinum temperature sensor. It provides 1000 ohms of resistance at 32 F (0 C). The temperature and humidity information from the HE-6300 can be used to calculate enthalpy, which plays an important part in determining energy-efficient and cost-effective economization strategies. Room humidity is also an important factor in the overall quality of indoor air. 3 Theory of Operation The humidity element is a nonmetallic capacitor made from carbon-loaded polymer plates. The plates sandwich a water-permeable polymer that changes its dielectric through adsorption of moisture in the air. The humidity-induced change in capacitance is used to produce a voltage signal proportional to the relative humidity of the sensed air. Because the element is directly affected by relative humidity, calculations involving temperature are avoided without sacrificing accuracy. The All-Polymer sensing area contains no metal, which increases the sensor s life span in HVAC environments. The temperature sensor is a resistive, thin-film nickel, a solid-state planar silicon, or a thin-film platinum type. (See Figure 3 for temperature curves.) For accurate measurement, avoid placing near windows, doors, vents, heaters, or on an outside wall. Temperature Requirements: -20 to 140 F (-29 to 60 C)! CAUTION: To avoid damage to the HE-6300, do not mount the unit in a location where high concentrations of corrosive vapors are present. 4 M ounting To mount the HE-6300: 1. Loosen the button-head screw on both sides of the plastic cover. 2. Pull the plastic cover off of the aluminum base plate. 3. If Wall Mounting (See Figure 4.): a. Using the backplate as a template, mark the two No. 8 screw holes and the 1/2 in. conduit hole. b. Drill the holes marked for the conduit and the two No. 8 screws. c. Feed the conduit through the 1/2 in. hole and the circuit board. d. Mount backplate to the wall using anchor plugs and No. 8 screws. 4. If Conduit Box Mounting (See Figure 4.): a. Attach the mounting bracket from the conduit box mounting kit (TE ) to the conduit box, using the two 6/32 x 3/4 in. flat-head screws included. b. Feed the conduit through the mounting bracket, the wall plate adapter, the HE-6300 backplate, and the conduit hole in the circuit board. c. With the wall plate adapter between the backplate of the HE-6300 and the mounting bracket, use the pan-head screws to secure the HE-6300 to the mounting bracket. 5 W iring! WARNING: Electrical Shock Hazard. Disconnect the power supply before wiring connections are made to prevent electrical shock or damage to the equipment. IMPORTANT: All wiring connections must be made in accordance with the National Electrical Code and all local regulations. To wire the transmitter: 1. Select the output voltage using the output selection jumper. (See Figure 5.) 2. Connect the wires to the appropriate positions on the terminal block. 3. Place the plastic cover back over the aluminum base and secure by tightening the button screw on either side of the unit. 4. If the HE-6300 was mounted vertically, peel the paper backing off of the vertical faceplate and press over the horizontal faceplate. 6 C heckout After wiring and installation are complete, apply power and make an operational check as shown in the appropriate controller documentation. Troubleshooting Procedures Testing If the HE Series transmitter is not functioning properly, use the following procedure to test the device. 1. Check that the sensor is mounted in a location that is truly indicative of the space humidity and temperature (away from drafts, moisture, sunlight, etc.). 2. Use an accurate humidity measurement instrument to determine the percent Relative Humidity (RH) of the area where the unit is sensing. Compare the test instruments RH reading with the corresponding RH being sensed by the HE Series transmitter. Note: The test instrument and the transmitter must be sensing air at the same temperature. A temperature difference of as little as 1 F can cause differences in measured RH of over 2.5% RH. The sensing element must be isolated from human body heat and respiration. For 0-10 VDC output, calculate the percent of RH as the VDC output times 10, e.g., 7.5 VDC = 75% RH. For 0-5 VDC output, calculate the percent of RH as the VDC output times 20, e.g., 3.5 VDC = 70% RH. IMPORTANT: Use a humidity-testing instrument with accuracy greater than the HE transmitter (± 3%), such as an optical dew point hygrometer rated at 0.5 C accuracy. A less accurate humidity tester, such as a portable device with more than 3% error, cannot be used to conclusively determine if a transmitter is operating within the 3% design parameters. However, a test device with more than 3% error may be used to determine if the transmitter has a gross sensing error. Before testing, be sure to wait 30 to 60 minutes for the device to stabilize to ambient temperature and humidity. Note: The RH test instrument has a specified accuracy with some expected error, and the transmitter has a specified accuracy rating of ± 3% between 20 and 80%. If the RH difference in readings between the test instrument and transmitter is less than or equal to the sum of the allowable errors, then the transmitter is functioning within its design specifications. Offset Adjustment IMPORTANT: Do not adjust the potentiometer unless the test results show the device has an offset error. The RH output signal is factory calibrated, and adjusting this setting is not recommended unless an offset error exists. If the percent RH difference in readings is more than the sum of the allowable errors (the accuracy rating of the test instrument plus the 3% transmitter error), then the transmitter s RH output can be adjusted as much as ± 5% to eliminate some of the offset error (any error beyond the expected error). (See Figure 6.) Note: If the device cannot be adjusted to the accuracy required by the application, replace the unit (since the maximum field offset adjustment is ± 5%). Note: ±0.5 C = ±0.9 F, which at a high RH such as 70% RH, corresponds to an error of about ±2% RH at 25 C. 6 HE-6300 Series Wall-mount Humidity Transmitter with Temperature Sensor

7 Repair and Replacement Field repairs must not be made. To obtain a replacement, contact the nearest Johnson Controls representative. Calculate the desired output voltage for the transmitter: Output Adjustment in Volts = Output Adjustment in RH 10 +5% RH 10% = RH per Volt 0.5 Volts 2. Locate the adjustment potentiometer on the circuit board. (See Figure 5.) 3. While continuing to monitor the device output, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to slightly turn the offset adjustment potentiometer to decrease the offset error. Turn the potentiometer clockwise to increase or counterclockwise to decrease the transmitter s output voltage until the offset is minimized.! CAUTION: Equipment Damage Hazard. Keep hands away from the sensor when adjusting the output voltage to avoid damage to the unit. 4. If the offset adjustment at one humidity level fails to remedy an accuracy problem at a higher or lower humidity level, replace the HE transmitter with a new device, since no additional field adjustment is possible (not an offset error).
