2 Dear Parent or Guardian: Your child is currently learning to create and state rhyming words. Here is your chance to help your child practice this important skill. In this PAL Packet you will find a short activity for you and your child to do. Please do the activity and The Back Page this evening. Then sign your name on The Back Page and have your child return it tomorrow. Remember, parents are a child s first teacher. 3 RHYMING WORDS Parent Pointer Rhyming words are words that end with the same sound. For example, clown and down are rhyming words because they end with the same sound. Do and you also rhyme because they end with the same sound. Learning to hear, identify, and match rhyming words is important as your child begins to read and write. Reading in the Home, on the Go, and for the Fun of It DIRECTIONS: Talk about the definition of rhyming words with your child. It is important that he or she recognizes that they are words that end with the same sound. Say the following rhyming pairs to your child: bag, rag; pack, back. Then have him or her say another word that rhymes with each pair. Read the Star Light, Star Bright rhyme to your child. Tell him or her to listen for words that rhyme as you read. Then read aloud the directions below the rhyme. Have your child complete each direction. Read the directions to your child on the Rhyme Time page. Have him or her complete the directions. Then have fun playing the Rhyme Time game. (Note: You may wish to glue the word cards on cardboard from a food box to be more durable.) Talk about It After you have finished the activity, turn to The Back Page to have your child show what he or she knows. Now go have some fun with the activity! Say and circle all the words that end with the same sound as light. 3. Read the words below aloud. 5 Rhyme Time Directions: Have your child read each word below. Then have him or her write a word in the empty box that rhymes with that word. Tell him or her to cut out each word on the lines. Place all the word cards face down. Take turns choosing two cards. Read the words on the cards aloud. Tell if the words end with the same sound. If they end with the same sound, they match, and the person may keep the pair of cards. If they do not end with the same sound, the person needs to place them face down for the next person s turn.
