2 EU Regulation 640/2009, 04/2014 and IEC definitions and efficiency classes Background Comprehensive legislation has been passed in the European Union with the objective of reducing power usage and CO 2 emissions. EU Regulation 640/2009 and supplement 04/2014 handle the energy demand and energy efficiency of induction motors in the industrial environment. In the meantime, this regulation is valid in all countries of the European Union. The standard IEC : defines efficiency classes for 50 and 60 Hz and stipulates, worldwide, which motors are involved and which exceptions apply. The EU Regulation is essentially based on this standard. Nomenclature New efficiency classes have been defined in IEC for induction motors (IE = International Efficiency): IE1 (Standard Efficiency) IE2 (High Efficiency) IE3 (Premium Efficiency) IE4 (Super Premium Efficiency) Measuring methods to determine the efficiency The efficiencies specified in IEC should be determined corresponding to IEC : This part has been valid since November 2007 and from November 2010 onwards replaces High efficiency Low efficiency Efficiency (%) IE4 Super Premium Efficiency IE3 Premium Efficiency IE2 High Efficiency IE1 Standard Efficiency IEC motors the previous IEC part of the standard. What is new: the actual additional losses are now measured and are no longer added as lump sum. 3 Motors involved EU Regulation 640/2009 and 04/2014 based on standard IEC The EU Regulation is valid in all EU countries. Description IEC : 200 is the basis for determining losses and therefore determining the efficiency. Exceptions in the EU Regulation Valid until July 26, 2014 Valid from July 27, 2014 At altitudes above 1,000 m above sea level At altitudes above 4,000 m above sea level For ambient temperatures above 40 C For ambient temperatures above 60 C For ambient temperatures below 15 C (any motor) or below 0 C (water-cooled motor) For coolant temperatures at the intake of a product below 5 C or above 25 C For ambient temperatures below 30 C (any motor) or below 0 C (water-cooled motor) For coolant temperatures at the intake of a product below 0 C or above 32 C Exceptions that have not changed Motors that have been designed to be operated completely immersed in liquid Motors completely integrated in a product (e.g. a gearbox, a pump, a fan or a compressor), whose energy efficiency cannot be determined independent of this product Motors that have been specifically designed for operation under the following conditions: At extremely high operating temperatures above 400 C In hazardous zones in the sense of Directive 94/9/EC of the European Parliament and the Council Brake motors The changes become effective on these dates: from June 16, 2011: The legally specified minimum efficiency IE2 for induction motors in S1 duty must be maintained according to the EU regulation from July 27, 2014: Expansion of EU Regulation 640/2009 to include supplements 04/2014 from January 1, 2015: The legally specified minimum efficiency IE3 must be maintained for power ratings from 7.5 kw to 375 kw or, as alternative, an IE2 motor plus frequency inverter from January 1, 2017: The legally specified minimum efficiency IE3 must be maintained for power ratings from 0.75 kw up to 375 kw or, as alternative, an IE2 motor plus inverter IE2 line motors connected to converters From January 1, 2015, low-voltage motors with efficiency IE2 will have the label: This obligation is only applicable within the EEA and it is the sole responsibility of the customer to appropriately use these motors. When operated with a converter, possible restrictions according to the technical documentation must still be taken into account! For converter operation, the following is always recommended: Motor temperature sensing with an integrated KTY 84 temperature sensor Bearing insulation from SH 225 The following are not involved 8-pole motors Pole-changing motors Synchronous motors Motors for intermittent duty S2... S9 Motors that have been specifically developed for inverter operation Single-phase motors Standard Efficiency When requested, motors that are excluded from the EU Regulation can still be supplied in IE1. Outside the European Economic Area, national legislation applies, i.e. here it is possible that IE1 motors can still be marketed.

Roadmap according to EU Regulation 640/ IE2 for all motors (acc. to standard) June 16, 2011 IE2 efficiency, as a minimum, is mandatory for induction motors 0.75 kw 375 kw IE3 for motors > 7.5 kw 375 kw IE3 for all motors 0.75 kw 375 kw or inverter + IE2 motor In the EU, it is not permissible to market IE1 motors (exceptions, refer to the legislation). January 1, 2015 IE3 efficiency, as a minimum, for motors > 7.5 kw 375 kw or combination inverter + IE2 motor January 1, 2017 IE3 efficiency, as a minimum, for motors > 0.75 kw 375 kw or combination inverter + IE2 motor Rating plates The technical data on rating plates changes as follows: Efficiency: The efficiencies as specified by the standard are stamped on the rating plate Nominal voltage: specified for 400 V Efficiency classification Since November 1, 2009, Siemens AG stamps all standard catalog motors, which fall under this legislation, with the efficiency classification/nomenclature according to IEC NEMA motors The energy legislation EPAct (Energy Policy Act) has been replaced effective by EISA (Energy Independence Security Act). EPAct defines the minimum efficiency (IE2) for power ratings from 1 to 200 HP, 2/4/6-pole, voltages of 230 V and 460 V. Since December 2010, EISA has been extending the legal minimum efficiency requirements and the following motors must fulfill the NEMA Premium Level (~IE3): HP 2-/4-/6-pole 230 V, 460 V Further, for instance, the following motors must comply with the NEMA Energy Efficiency Level (~IE2): HP 2-/4-/6- and 8-pole All voltages < 600 V with the exception of 230 V and 460 V Footless motors (IM B5) NEMA Design C (increased starting torque) For details, refer to NEMA MG1, Table Examples of rating plates Country of manufacture Order number Maximum ambient temperature IE Class Order number NEMA Class Rated voltage Nominal efficiency Rated voltage 60 Hz data acc. to NEMA Nominal efficiency
