6 PREVIEW 1st Emergency Core Service of Kopernikus PREVIEW = PREVention, Information and Early Warning A European Integrated Project part of the Sixth Framework Programme Started in April 2005 for a 45 month performance schedule Funded by the European Commission, Enterprise and Industry DG: PREVIEW will provide new or enhanced information services for risk management in three thematic domains: Atmospheric Geophysics Man-made

9 Floods in Europe: Dimensions and facts Most common natural disaster in Europe 8 out of the 20 most important floods ever recorded in Europe occurred during the last decade Over the last 20 years, floods in Europe have affected over 7 million people and killed 1931 others Recent flooding in Ukraine and Romania killed 26 persons ("Ukraine has not seen anything like this in 100 years") Economic damage of August 2005 flood in Germany, Austria and Switzerland approx. 16 Conclusions Kopernikus Plain Flood service supports especially the prevention and post-crisis phases of the risk management cycle from European to local level by: Hazard mapping Assets mapping Flood forecasting (Ensemble) Damage assessment Flood Information System Kopernikus Plain Flood geo-information products support the implementation of the EU Flood Directive Kopernikus enabled a significant improvement of already existing Plain Flood services

17 The German TerraSAR-X the new information source First commercial 1m resolution radar satellite Realised on the basis of a PPP-agreement Launched June, 15th 2007 Fully operational since January 2008 weather independent acquisition, worldwide high acquisition flexibility 4 hour delivery with direct access service Reliable complement of optical satellite data and airborne surveys Infoterra is the owner of the commercial exploitation rights scientific exploitation organized by DLR!
