6 Our Strategies: Where We Started Strong internal recycling program (since 1994): 17 commodities, including office and process waste 95% of waste diverted from the landfill

9 Our Challenges Energy prerequisites and credits require an Energy Star rating or comparison to similar buildings Water usage in offices was not segregated from manufacturing processes Diverse Functions: administrative offices, manufacturing facility as well as dying and quality assurance laboratories, making a uniform implementation of policies challenging

15 How You Can Get Started Assess your current sustainable building criteria Is your recycling program strong? Do you have an environmentally preferable purchasing policy? >>>If you don t have sustainable building programs in place, implement those programs prior to trying for LEED certification Assess whether you have a multi-use facility Can you separate out the different functions of your facility? Determine which departments will be affected by the policy changes >>>Engage early, coordinate departments together

16 How You Can Get Started Determine any low cost building upgrades that would lower your environmental footprint >>>Earn innovative LEED points >>>Entryway mats, Carpool parking spots Look at any aspects of your manufacturing processes that reduce your environmental footprint but are not within the LEED credit criteria Design an ongoing tracking system PRIOR to certification to ensure that policies are being followed
