Tools for Energy Tracking and Benchmarking ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager for Congregations Steve Bell (Contractor) Energy and Security Group LLC ENERGY STAR Congregations
Why Does Green Start With Energy? Energy is largest subset of a building s environmental and carbon footprint Energy efficiency provides financial returns that can support future green investments
Houses of Worship EPA estimates that if America s 370,000 congregations cut energy use 10% this would save: Save nearly $315 million for missions, other priorities Provide more than 1.8 billion new kwh electricity without additional cost and pollution Prevent more than 1.3 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions Equivalent to the emissions of about 240,000 cars Equivalent to planting nearly 300,000 million acres of trees But, 30% savings are typical
Challenge participants and their members are encouraged to: Step 1: Join ENERGY STAR Take the first step to making your Congregation more energy efficient by joining the ENERGY STAR Congregation Network at Step 2: Measure Your Energy Use Use ENERGY STAR s Portfolio Manager tool to enter your monthly energy use and to track your energy use over time. Login at Step 3: Develop and Implement Your Plan Use the many technical resources available from ENERGY STAR to learn about energy-efficiency opportunities, formulate an action plan for improving your facility, and implement your plan. Step 4: Earn Recognition Recognition as a leader in reducing energy consumption can send a powerful message of environmental stewardship.
Benchmark Energy Use Clergy, governing board, facility managers and business administrators need to know baseline energy costs: What are we spending on utilities? How much energy is used? How does this compare to other facilities? Up to 400% variation in similar facility energy use
Measure Your Energy Use Trends Can Identify Areas Of High Energy Use Requiring Investigation 360, , , , , ,000 Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec
Assessing Energy Performance How do your buildings compare to others? Need: A standardized, comparable metric of whole building energy performance Introducing EPA s Energy Performance Rating System
National Energy Performance Rating System Is 10 MPG high or low for this automobile? Is 40 kbtu/sf/yr high or low for this building? Fuel Efficiency (MPG) Energy Efficiency Rating (1 100)
Eligible Space Types Hospitals Retail Office Buildings Hotels Medical Office Buildings Waste Water Treatment Plants Courthouses Financial Centers Warehouses Dormitories Supermarkets Schools
Energy Performance Rating ENERGY STAR Energy Performance Rating Number of Buildings Lower EUI: Best Performers Energy Use Intensity (EUI) (Kbtu/sf/yr) Carbon Intensity Higher EUI: Worst Performers
How Does the Energy Performance Rating System Work? Normalizes building variables affecting energy consumption Weather Hours of operations Occupancy Plug load And creates a whole building mpg rating
Why Benchmark with ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager Simple metrics Energy Utilization Index (EUI) for All businesses 1 to100 rating for some businesses Analytical tool based on statistical analysis National peer comparison Unbiased Emissions estimates based on location Comprehensive development process with periodic updates Extensive research EPA, DOE, NOAA Industry standard 4+ billion sf has been benchmarked using Portfolio Manager Internationally recognized symbol of superior energy performance and environmental protection
Learning to Use Portfolio Manager Perceived barriers to benchmarking I do not know how Time consuming Gaining access to required data
Perceived Barrier: I Don t Know How Energystar.gov/benchmark EPA conducts free live web seminars Pre-recorded web seminars System tour of the tool Frequently asked questions Quick Reference Guides Building Benchmarking Starter Kit
Perceived Barrier: Benchmarking is Time Consuming Estimated time = 1 2 ½ hours Phase I. Initial Benchmarking Data collection up to 1-2 hours Data input minutes Phase II. Monthly updates 5 to 15 minutes
Perceived Barrier: Gaining Access to Required Data General Address: city, county, state, & Zip Code Year Built Utility Consumption consecutive months for each building Space Type Data Square Footage Seating Capacity Weekday Operations Hours of Operation Number of PCs Presence of Commercial Cooking Number of Commercial Refrigerators/Freezers

Other Portfolio Manager Features Track Campaigns through Master Accounts if you want Identify Percent Energy Reduction Generate a Statement of Energy Performance Facility Summary Report Objective report to congregation on management of energy costs
Tracking Campaigns Objective: Allow organizations such as your denomination to consolidate data campaign participants and aggregate energy and carbon savings. Process Organization creates a Master Account Master Account appears in a public registry Individual users can share facilities with Master Account if they choose Master Account holder can view progress for all facilities that have been shared
Tracking Campaigns
Master Account- Data Sharing for Campaign Episcopal Diocese SOCC Church A Church B Church C Members Bldg 1 Bldg 2
Percent Energy Reduction Objective: Provide a metric to show a percent change in energy use over time Creates tracking capability for non-ratable spaces Process: No additional information required from user The tool compares energy use between two periods adjusting for weather only
Statement of Energy Performance
Environmental Stewardship In addition to the energy cost savings and percent energy reduction, you may wish to express the savings in lay-terms for your congregants. Use the following work sheet to estimate the environmental benefits from your actions CO 2 Emissions (1,000 lbs/year) 736 /5.7 = cars on the road (~129 Cars) Or CO 2 Emissions (1,000 lbs/year) 736 /4.03 = acres of trees planted (~183 acres)
