2 What is FSC? Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an independent, international organisation that promotes the development of environmentally compatible, socially beneficial and financially sound, practices for management of the world s forests. FSC has established 10 fundamental principles and 56 criteria for responsible forest management. These call for protection and preservation of biological diversity and other natural resources, for example, but also support economically sound forestry operations that contribute to development of the local community. National work groups, with equal representation of financial, ecological and social interests, develop the general principles to establish national standards, with concrete guidelines that can be monitored and reviewed. FSC accredits certification bodies, which carry out audits. Forest Stewardship Council the labelling scheme for responsible forestry operations, is empowered to ensure that FSC s standards are fulfilled and the auditors grant certificates attesting to their compliance. The Forest Stewardship Council is supported by the major environmental organisations in all parts of the world. In several countries, companies that purchase timber and paper products have established trading networks, in collaboration with the WWF and other environmental organisations. These increase the range of FSC certified products and market FSC as a credible environmental labelling concept to broad groups of consumers. 3 Source control is required FSC product certification requires manufacturers to show documentation that the FSC declared wood raw materials come from FSC certified forestry operations. Verification is established through a special source control certification Chain of Custody. In the source control certification process, the entire chain from forestry operations to finished product must be documented. A certificate of source control confirming the origin is required for every link in the chain, from the forest to the paper mill, from the paper mill to the printing plant, from the printing plant to the finished magazine. The same organisations, accredited by FSC to certify forestry operations, also conduct certification of source control. After a thorough revision process, a new standard for Chain-of-Custody was approved by the Board of FSC International in The raw material input links with the output of certified products for a specific product line. The producer keeps a record of the volume of FSC-certified timber that is being supplied and a corresponding share of the products may be certified. There is a minimum threshold level of 10 per cent of the raw material being FSCcertified for being accredited with an FSC Chain-of- Custody certificate. These, so called, FSC volume credits must be used for the production of FSC-certified products within a 12-month period or they are forfeited. The CoC standard also demands a stricter control of uncertified raw material. All of the fibre raw material for the FSC-certified product line must come from controlled sources. No raw material may come from controversial sources. This means that the FSC s drive for responsible forest management is being expanded into forests that are not certified. The Chain-of-Custody, as well as the control of uncertified raw material, is audited by FSC accredited certification bodies. There are three different labels: FSC Pure, where 100 per cent of the raw material is FSC-certified. FSC Mixed, where the input of FSC-certified raw material equals the output of FSC-certified products, while the uncertified raw materials are strictly controlled in order to avoid timber from controversial sources. Recovered fibre may also form part of the basis for this label. FSC Recycled, where 100 per cent of the raw material is recovered fibre. SCA s pulp and publication papers are certified as FSC Mixed. 4 SCA s greatest assets the wood fibre! New and growing forests are one of the most effective means to reduce carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. SCA s well managed forests (2.6 million hectares) are our biggest assets in our environmental work, but also an important strategic resource to secure the raw material supply to our pulp and paper products. SCA s various production plants for sawn timber, pellets, pulp and paper involves the usage of the whole tree. About 85 million seedlings are raised each year to produce new forest. The volume of standing timber is more than 50 percent higher than in The standing volume has grown from 130 million m³ to over 200 million m³ and is forecast to grow to 250 million m³ by year Increased standing wood volume means that more carbon dioxide will be stored.

5 SCA fibre strategy SCA optimise raw material by making use of local fibre, thereby achieving effective resource management and lower transport costs and emissions. The effect of this is that fresh wood fibre is used in our Swedish mills, which are located close to our own forest resources. At the paper mill in Aylesford, in Great Britain, in which SCA has a 50 per cent holding, we produce new paper based exclusively on recovered fibre, since there is excellent access to recovered paper there just outside London. Close to the many consumers of paper in Europe, we also use recovered paper in Laakirchen, Austria, for the production of SC papers. Up to 50 per cent of the paper weight is recycled fibre, thereby contributing to the efficient management of resources. The SCA Group as a whole is one of Europe s largest collector and user of recovered paper, and in total, SCA uses as much recycled fibre as fresh wood fibre in its production. 6 Eco lifecycle Forests play a crucial role in the balance of carbon dioxide. Trees absorb an enormous amount of carbon dioxide from the air and, with the help of solar energy and photosynthesis, change the carbon dioxide to oxygen and carbohydrates. Carbohydrates, which contain carbon, are the foundation for the tree s growth, and this is how carbons are stored in the growing forest. Timber becomes forest and paper products that continue to hold stored carbon. Wooden houses, for example, bind carbon dioxide over their lifetimes. And even after the house or paper decays, the total amount of carbon in the atmosphere is not raised: The carbon was earlier removed from the atmosphere by growing trees. If the wood and paper remains are used as fuel and replace oil. The positive effect for the climate is even greater.

7 Certified woods SCA s Swedish forests were certified under the FSC scheme in The Forest Stewardship Council s mission is to achieve environmentally-sound, sociallybeneficial and economically-viable forestry worldwide. FSC provides a credible forest certification system to attain this goal. SCA is one of the first paper manufactures in the world to offer large volumes of FSC-certified printing paper. SCA s pulp and publication papers are certified as FSC Mixed, where the total input of FSC-certified raw material equals the output of FSC-certified products, while the uncertified raw material that is not from FSC-certified forest land are strictly controlled in order to avoid timber from controversial sources. Recovered fibre may also form part of the basis for the label. When buying FSC-certified products the output is always 100 per cent FSC.

8 FSC PULP IN LEADING POSITION The mark of responsible forestry DNV-CoC Deliveries of FSC-certified pulp from SCA have more than doubled between The combination of TCF (Total Chlorine Free) and FSC, with the continuously improving environmental work, has given us a leading position among kraft pulp mills with the least environmental impact.

9 GROWING DEMANDS The interest in FSC-certified newsprint paper is growing. More and more are showing an interest in FSC, ranging from the general public to companies, which has lead to an increased demand from publishers and printers. When more suppliers including SCA can offer larger FSC certified volumes publishers and printers have an increased flexibility in their choice of paper supplier, which also positively influences the FSC demand among paper grades such as standard and improved newsprint.

10 The mark of responsible forestry DNV-CoC SGS-COC-2071 SC products Recovered post-consumer paper may be part of the basis for the certification of FSC Mixed products. For products based entirely on recovered paper, there is a separate label, FSC Recycled. The Laakirchen paper mill is using a considerable share of recovered paper from controlled sources in its production of SC paper. In accordance with the FSC Mixed standard, this fibre content is part of the basis of the FSC-certified paper products from Laakirchen (Our certification number is SGS-COC-2071). The SC papers are both FSC and PEFC-certified. The interests in both FSC and PEFC-certified SC paper has grown tremendously in the recent years.

11 FSC-certified LWC has met favourable market reception Many of our customers have now completed the chain-of-custody certification that is required to document the entire chain from forest management, via paper mills and printing plants, to the finished product. This entitles customers to mark their product with the FSC Mixed Sources label. SCA can be of assistance to help customers to apply for FSC-certification. Our FSC certification number is DNV-COC
