Printed media are an important source of information and knowledge for many people around the world. The Ortviken paper mill in Sundsvall plays its role by manufacturing and delivering publication papers to Europe and other parts of the world. The Ortviken paper mill and the Östrand pulp mill in Timrå together form SCA Graphic Sundsvall. In turn, SCA Graphic Sundsvall is part of the SCA business area Forest Products, which, in addition to publication papers and pulp also produces solid wood products and forestry-based bio fuels. Forest Products also manages SCA s extensive forest holdings, supplies SCA s Swedish plants with wood raw material and offers cost-efficient transport solutions to SCA units. $! " # # '! 3 THE RIGHT PAPER FOR THE CUSTOMER For our customers everything must be right the style, text, images, layout and, of course, the paper. Based on customer requirements, we are constantly working to improve and develop our publication paper. Newsprint is an uncoated paper mainly used for newspapers. With the development of brighter and improved grades, supplements, magazines and advertising inserts are now also largely printed on this kind of paper. Our newsprint is marketed as GraphoNews, GraphoBright, GraphoBright Pearl, GraphoBright Extra and GraphoCrystal. LWC paper is a lightweight coated paper with a high-quality printing surface. Customers are primarily publishing houses with high demands in terms of print quality and image reproduction. Our LWC paper is marketed as GraphoCote, GraphoLux and GraphoMatt. Newsprint from Ortviken is used in newspapers such as Sundsvalls Tidning, Aftonbladet, Göteborgsposten, Dagens Nyheter, Svenska Dagbladet, Turun Sanomat, Jyllandsposten, Bild, De Telegraaf and de Volkskrant, as well as in supplements and some advertising inserts. Our LWC paper is used in magazines such as Elle, Cosmopolitan, Svensk Jakt, Råd och Rön, Computer Weekly and BBC Wildlife, as well as in catalogues and advertising materials.! " $ 1. Porter 2. 4 AROUND THE CLOCK THROUGHOUT THE YEAR The Ortviken paper mill comprises four paper machines that run in principal around the clock throughout the year. Combined, two of the paper machines can produce 360,000 tons of newsprint and improved newsprint per year, while the other two can together produce 440,000 tons of LWC paper. The raw material consists of healthy fresh spruce pulpwood, primarily from SCA s own forests in northern Sweden. The raw material is not permitted to be more than three weeks old from felling to arrival at the mill. Ortviken has approximately 1,000 employees, of whom most are involved in production and maintenance. Many professional categories are represented at the mill: process operators, technicians, various types of engineers, economists, marketing personnel, electricians and personnel administrators, to name but a few.

5 ORTVIKEN S PRODUCTION PROCESS WOOD ROOM 1. Fresh spruce wood is cut (1A), deiced in the winter (1B), debarked (1C) and chopped into chips (1D) that are screened. The bark, together with purchased biofuel, is used in the steam power station, which generates energy corresponding to 70,000 m 3 of oil per year. The generated steam is then used to dry the paper. PULP MILL 2. The chips are transported to the pulp mill, where pulp is produced in accordance with the thermomechanical principle, which means that the chips are heat treated and ground into pulp in refiners. 3. For the production of newsprint pulp, the chips are ground in one refining stage, while for certain paper grades, a portion of the pulp is bleached. 4. For the production of LWC paper, the pulp is then further treated in a second refining stage. The pulp is then bleached without the use of any chlorine chemicals. 5. To increase the strength of the LWC paper, a small amount of kraft pulp from the Östrand pulp mill is added. 6. The pulp is screened and pumped to storage towers. LWC PAPER LWC paper is produced on LWC1 and LWC4. 7. The finished pulp mix, called furnish, consists of approximately 1 percent fiber and 99 percent water. The furnish is pumped onto a fine-mesh plastic fabric called a wire. 8. As a result of dewatering on the wire, the paper sheet begins to be formed. The fibers are bound to each other. 9. In the press section, the dryness and strength of the paper is further increased by pressing out the water, and the paper s thickness is formed. 10. The paper is then dried in the drying section s steam-heated cylinders. 11. The manufacturing process is monitored by a fully automatic process-data system. The paper web is inspected automatically. 12. The slightest damage to the paper is rectified in the reel winder. 13. Both sides of the paper are covered with a coating colour consisting mainly of clay and ground marble. Following each coating, the paper is dried using infra-red heating, hot air and steam. LWC 4 has an on-line coating machine, while the coating machine for LWC 1 is located separately. 14. Following the coating stage, any damage is repaired and the paper s gloss is then developed in the supercalenders. 16. The finished reel, called a jumbo reel, is then transported to the winder, where the reels are cut and reeled into the format ordered by the customer since our production is customer-order controlled. 17. The paper reels are packaged and transported to the Tunadal Terminal for forwarding. NEWSPRINT Newsprint and improved newsprint are manufactured on PM 2 and PM 5. FOCUS ON THE ENVIRONMENT Our operations and our products are based on wood fiber, a renewable resource that forms an important part of the eco cycle. For us, environmental work forms an important part of our operations. We make constant efforts to reduce our impact on the environment and to be economical with our resources. We employ a carefully considered fiber strategy based on our use of fresh wood fiber in our Swedish mills, which are located close to our own forest resources. At the paper mill in Aylesford, in the UK, in which SCA has a 50 percent holding, we produce new paper based exclusively on recovered paper, since there is excellent access to recovered paper there, while the SCA mill at Laakirchen, in Austria, uses both fresh wood fiber and recycled fiber. We offer a unique combination of TCF, totally chlorine free, and FSC-certified products. SCA s forestry operations are certified in accordance with the Forest Stewardship Council, FSC. This demonstrates that we meet the criteria for responsible forestry. The Ortviken paper mill, in turn, is chain-of-custody certified, meaning that we can trace the origins of our products and that we therefore qualify to use the FSC symbol. This means that our customers can also meet the requirements necessary to use the symbol. SCA is the only private company able to deliver large volumes of FSC certified publication paper. We are also certified in accordance with the ISO environmental-management system, which ensures that we maintain low emissions levels in production, and provides us with the opportunity to meet the requirements for several environmental labels. We meet the requirements for seals such as The Nordic Swan, which guarantees low emissions and other environmental benefits. We are also certified in accordance with the ISO 9000:2001 quality-assurance system.

7 SALES AND DISTRIBUTION Our publication papers are mainly sold to customers in Scandinavia and other parts of Europe, but also in other parts of the world. Sales are conducted, in part through our own sales offices located around Europe and, in part, through agents. In order to provide the best possible service, we operate a technical customer-service unit, whose employees are able to offer support and service, enabling the customer to use our products in the most beneficial manner. SCA Transforest is SCA s transport and logistics company. It handles the distribution of our products. The distribution system is organized to ensure that products are delivered rapidly, securely and without damage. Deliveries to Swedish customers are made by truck or rail, while deliveries to other parts of Europe are made via specially designed vessels. The vessels make calls at the important ports of Lübeck, Rotterdam and Tilbury year round. Deliveries to other parts of the world are made using other ships. THE PAPER OF THE FUTURE Our publication papers are backed by considerable research and product development. We make continual efforts to improve our products in order to meet the rigorous requirements set by our customers. In developing future products, Ortviken and SCA Graphic Research collaborate closely. We also cooperate closely with many of our customers, carrying out various projects to develop our products.
