1 Norton Youth Cheerleading 2010! We are excited that you have expressed interest to participate as a Norton Youth Cheerleader for the 2010 season! Please read over the material with a parent and sign the permission form and compliance form to partake in this year s tryouts. Our clinics will be held, Wednesday (May 12), Thursday (May 13) and Friday (May 14) from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Norton High School Wrestling Room. Tryouts will be held that Saturday (May 15) at the Norton High School Wrestling Room between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Your squad s exact tryout time will be released during clinic week. All of our cheerleading positions are chosen by a team of judges that are not a part of our community and that none of the girls will know. Your daughters may, however, see familiar faces such as tally judges and clinic coaches in the tryout room. BOTH THE CLINICS AND THE TRYOUTS ARE CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC. Best of luck to your daughter! Please Note Registration takes place on the first night of clinics - May 12. However, to move things along quickly, we are taking pre-registration. If you are interested in pre-registering, please read over all enclosed material and mail back your signed compliance form and signed permission form. If you do so, you need not escort your daughter on the first night of clinics. For those who do not pre-register, you must bring both the permission form and the compliance form with you the first night of clinics or your daughter will NOT be able to participate. BASIC INFORMATION Norton Youth Football strives for you to have a great experience this season. Below is the list of squads we have available. FLAG SQUAD: Flag football cheerleaders are not required to try out and information on registration for this squad will be given out on a later date. B SQUAD: (Age 7-8) Girls on this squad are all 7-8 years old and will be cheering for boys who are also 7-8 years old. They will learn the very basics of cheerleading. To try out for B squad, you must be 8 years old on or before December 31 st A SQUAD: (Ages 8, 9 and 10) Girls on this squad will learn the advanced basics and a few new elements of cheerleading. JV SQUAD: (Ages 10, 11 and 12) This squad will learn more difficult motions, timing and control. At this stage, you will sharpen your skills. VARSITY SQUAD: (Ages 11, 12 and 13) Girls on this squad should know all the basics and motions, timing and control should be advanced. You will learn special dance routines and complex cheers. One of the main goals of the varsity squad is to prepare for the Middle School Cheerleading experience. *This year, the JV and Varsity squads will be trying out together. The top 10 scores will be placed on Varsity and the next ten scores will be placed on JV. However, age and/or grade will play a part in which squad your daughter can make. For example, a 10 year old or a fourth grader can only make the JV squad and a 13 year old or a seventh grader can only make Varsity. **Prior to trying out, each girl must pick which squad best suits her. *** Because of reasons beyond our control, this year the Norton Middle School Cheerleading Try-outs will be held after the Youth Try-outs. Therefore, if you are a seventh grader and you make the Norton Youth

3 Varsity Squad, you will NOT be able to try out for the Middle School 7 th Grade Squad. You must choose which squad you would like to try out for. NORTON YOUTH PANTHER CHEERLEADING TRYOUTS 2010 **To tryout, you must be 8 years old on or by December 31 st, 2010 but not older than 13 by September 1, Participation is closed to any girl who is entering 8 th grade or who is planning to try out for the Norton Middle School 7 th grade squad. DON T FORGET- You MUST have a signed permission form and compliance form to participate. Clinics: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (May 12th, 13th and 14th) 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the NORTON HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING ROOM Tryouts: Saturday (May 15 th ) From 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the NORTON HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING ROOM. Squads will be posted on the Norton Youth Football website at by 5:00 p.m. on Saturday evening. Attendance: You are required to attend all three clinics. If you are late, or have to leave early, please let me know before the clinic begins. YOU are responsible for making up missed practices on your own. We will not teach you individually. In the event of a tie at try-outs, attendance will be used as a tie-breaker. Dress for Tryouts: Black shorts, white T-shirts (with no writing, designs, etc.), white clean tennis shoes, white socks, no jewelry and hair pulled back off of your face. You WILL be judged on appearance!!! JUDGED AREAS FOR TRYOUTS 1. Required Cheer - A cheer will be taught at clinics. Your child will be judged on the following: knowledge of the cheer, cheer motions (dynamic, distinct and confident), voice control, (LOUD and clear), and spirit projection (smile, pep and eye contact). 2. Required Chant - A chant will be taught at clinics. Your child will be judged on the same areas as the required cheer. 3. Jumps- The following skills will be included in tryouts. They will be demonstrated during clinics, and any help or instruction you need may be requested at that time. HURDLER JUMP TOE TOUCH/RUSSIAN JUMP DOUBLE JUMP** JV and Varsity ONLY 4. Stunt-This is a chance for the girls to show the judges their individual talent. Stunt options may include cartwheel, round-off, split, back handspring, etc. Stunt scoring is not necessarily on difficulty, but more so on perfection. 5. Spirit Craft Bag- JV and VARSITY GIRLS ONLY will be required to decorate a spirit craft bag (provided for them). This item will be used at

4 games as candy bags for the competing cheerleaders and is due at the beginning of the third day of Clinics. Each craft bag may include Norton colors, the Norton Panther mascot, paw prints and/or football or cheerleading references. Please be creative and use glitter, feathers, sequins, etc. NO NAMES should appear on your craft bag itself. To ensure proper credit, please place a piece of tape loosely to the handle with your name on it. In the event you are not chosen as an NYF cheerleader, you WILL NOT get your craft bag back and Norton Youth Football reserves the right to use your bag during the 2010 football season. COMPLIANCE FORM *This form must be signed and returned by the first day of Clinics (Wednesday, May 12 th ), in order for your daughter to try out for the 2010 Norton Youth Football season

RULES/REGULATIONS/OBLIGATIONS If you are chosen as a cheerleader for the 2010 season, you will be asked to comply with the following: 1. Cheerleading is a 4 month summer and fall commitment. Practices will begin mid-july and games run through October. You may NOT miss

6 games to play another fall sport. Cheerleaders are required to miss no more than 4 practices or games the entire season. This is a commitment and a priority if your daughter chooses to try out! 2. There will be certain financial obligations which you must assume. (These are approximate figures) Norton Youth Football registration fee- $75 Cheerleading shoes - $20 Cheerleading briefs - $8 Cheerleading bodysuit - $25 Cheerleading warm-ups - $45 Spirit materials (candy, craft items, etc) - $15 Cheerleading camp (ALL SQUADS) - TBA Dry-Clean uniform at the end of the season and turn in on due date (NO EXCEPTIONS!) 3. Cheerleading parents will be required to help serve at the concession stand, man the spirit table and sell 50/50 raffle tickets at home games only. (We will rotate turns.) 4. Cheerleading parents will be required to transport child to and from games ON TIME. 5. Families will be required to participate in fundraising throughout the season. 6. Cheerleaders will be responsible for maintaining a positive, friendly attitude beginning with clinics and throughout the season. Coaches and advisors will keep a record to ensure this! There is a NO TOLERANCE policy as well as immediate removal for any cheerleader who acts or conducts herself in a manner inappropriate or unbecoming of our league.
