2 Welcome Team Captains Congratulations on making the commitment to form a team for the 5 th annual Komen Maryland Ocean City Race for the Cure. Year after year, Team Captains, like you, have proven to be incredible leaders, making the Race more successful in furthering our mission to end breast cancer forever. We cannot thank you enough for your hard work and dedication to saving lives! 70 percent of total funds raised through the Race for the Cure are raised by our teams that s YOU and your efforts! Team members also made up over 75 percent of the 11,500 Race participants in the 2015 Race for the Cure in Hunt Valley. This Team Captain Toolkit is a resource to help you create and manage your successful team. It will serve as an excellent tool to take your team to the top as you recruit team members and fundraise! A Message from your Team Coach If this is your first year as a Team Captain, welcome to the Komen team! If you are a returning Team Captain, we re so happy to have you back for another fun-filled year! Being a Team Captain is a challenging but incredibly rewarding responsibility. As you build your mighty team, no matter what the size, YOU are making a difference. Every step you take and every dollar you raise helps bring us #OneStepCloser to finding the cures to bring an end to this disease. Beyond our community, donations fund groundbreaking research that will improve the way breast cancers are treated in the future. Our advice: Start building your team early. The sooner you get going, the more funds you ll raise the bigger your team s impact will be. Your registration fee gets you to the start line, but fundraising is what will one day get us to the cures. 3 Your Dollars at Work Your impact of racing with Komen Maryland is more than wearing pink, the ribbon or participating in a Race. Breast cancer is a disease that affects too many lives. Susan G. Komen Maryland is making a difference by fighting breast cancer on all fronts both locally, in our community, and globally. 75 percent of our funds stay in Maryland: Since 1993, we have funded over $22.5 million to support local breast health programs that provide: Clinical breast exams, free mammograms and diagnostic tests for uninsured and underinsured women. Outreach and navigation to educate and help women through screening and treatment. Meals, transportation and co-pay assistance for those undergoing treatment. Support programs and mentoring for survivors and those living with metastatic breast cancer. 25 percent is pooled with other affiliates to fund international research: Susan G. Komen has contributed more than $840 million in global funding devoted to groundbreaking research. Komen Maryland has funded $10.8 million of this transformative research. In addition, Komen Maryland provides the following free of charge: Community educational events and breast health outreach Resource Guide for breast health and healing Survivor support and education

4 Your Role as a Team Captain As the Team Captain, you will be the primary point of contact for your team members. It ll be up to you to create your team on the Race website by visiting oc.komenmd.org, invite people to join and keep members motivated, inspired and informed of the team s progress. You will be responsible for making sure that every team member is registered and ready to help your team fundraise! Team Captain s Checklist I have distributed informational materials to team members, friends, family, coworkers, etc. I encouraged team members to register for Sleep in for the Cure if they cannot attend the Race. I am monitoring my team s progress with the Fundraising Thermometer and am continuing to recruit and encourage fundraising. I have encouraged every member of my team to raise more than they did last year OR set their own personal goals, if this is their first year. I have marked my calendar for Team Challenges. I have established a meeting area on Race day for my team, and I have let them know where and when to meet. Motivate Your Team Fundraise. Inform your team on the importance of fundraising. Remind them that their registration fee gets them to the start line, but their fundraising dollars get us closer to the cures. Educate. Provide your team with our mission materials, including how their dollars are going to make a real difference in our community. Set goals. Set team goals and encourage each team member to set their own personal goals. Organize. Keep track of each team member s progress and share tools to help them succeed. Play. Create an activity that brings your team together to bond.

5 Building Your Team Keep in mind that potential team members are everywhere! Wherever you go and talk to people is a good start: the gym, church, school groups, work, grocery store, etc. Anyone and everyone can join your team if you tell them how! Tips for recruiting new team members: Set up your company team and have a friendly competition for participation between corporate departments, family members, or schools. Publicize your team in your company newsletter. Customize Team Posters by adding personal stories or who you Race for, as well as recruitment and fundraising goals, and hang them in common areas. Host a Team Kick-Off Party where your guests can learn about the Race and join your team. Recruit co-captains to help spread the word about joining your team. Host a registration table at your work, school or place of worship. Get social and share your team information on social media include a link to your team page (*don t forget to use our Race hashtag #OneStepCloser). Sleep in for the Cure Even if you can t make it on Race day, you can still make a difference by registering as a Sleep In participant. Kids for the Cure You don t have to be a grown-up to Race for the Cure! Kids under 11 can join your team as Kids for the Cure and Race with you on Race day.

6 Pink Perks! Official Teams An Official Team is a team with 10 or more members. As an Official Team, the Team Captain will receive the Official Team logo from their Team Coach that can be used or printed on team t-shirts, s, team flyers, etc. It s a great way to show others the work that you have put into your recruitment and fundraising efforts. Team Challenge We challenge YOU! Rally your team and come ready to work! Teams will compete against other teams in one of the six categories for: 1. Most participants (Deadline: Friday, April 8). 2. Most funds raised (Deadline: Monday, May 16). Team Challenge Categories: Workplaces with 500+ employees Schools Workplaces with -499 employees Family/Social First-Time Teams Gyms/Fitness Clubs The winning team for most participants from each category will be recognized on Race day and will receive a team banner to carry. Team Tailgate Areas The Team Tailgate Area is an opportunity for your team to have three parking spaces right outside Race Village! This is a great area for your team to meet before the Race to eat, socialize and celebrate all of your work and commitment during Race season. Teams with 30 or more members that raise $3,000+ (not including registration fees) by Monday, April 8, are eligible for a space in the Team Tailgate Area on Race day! Challenge yourself and challenge your team - don t miss your opportunity to qualify for this fun team incentive.

7 Be a fundracer As the leader of your team, and a leader in the fight to end breast cancer, it is important for you to know and share the impact of fundraising. Funds raised for the Komen Maryland Race for the Cure in Hunt Valley battle breast cancer on all fronts. A donation is more than dollars. It s a real difference made by the people in our community, for those affected by breast cancer in our community. Tips for Success Learn about our Power of 10 Program clicking here or visiting our blog at and viewing the blog post titled, We Challenge You. Will You Accept? Make a little add up to a lot by asking 10 friends to donate $ Lead by example: Excitement is contagious. It is crucial that your teammates see and feel your dedication and enthusiasm throughout Race season. Maybe the best way to inspire your teammates to fundraise is to start fundraising yourself! 2. Ask: Ask anyone and everyone if they will donate. It s not as hard as you may think because people genuinely want to help you with something that you believe in. Send an to everyone you know encouraging them to make a donation to your team. In most cases, people donate their time or money simply because they were asked. 3. Never miss an opportunity: Now is not the time to be shy! Let every person know that you are participating in the Race for the Cure. Inform every one of your fundraising goal and let everyone know your purpose for participating. Who to Ask Anyone is a potential donor! Ask people that you see every day: Family School friends In-laws Workout trainer Co-workers Your dry cleaners Significant other s co-workers Your doctor
