1 E-3 Clad Inswing Bi-fold Door Installation Guide Please read these instructions in their entirety prior to beginning the installation process. is not responsible for site measurements or the structural requirements for the installation of the Bi-fold door system. The weight of the door is carried by the header, therefore it is imperative that the top track be securely anchored to the header. We recommend the Bi-fold door system be installed with a minimum of two people; one person handling the door panels and the other person attaching and adjusting hardware. Caution panels can be extremely heavy and awkward to handle. We also recommend that all components be finished prior to installation. Otherwise special care is needed in labeling components during the un-assembling process, thus allowing ease in the reassembling process. All hardware holes have been pre-drilled. Do not drill any holes during assembly. 2 Refer to your SPW Bi-fold drawing to determine your specific door set-up. Load head track: top pivot - left or right carrier sets - intermediate carrier set. 3 Sill No pre-assembly preparation required. Side Jambs No pre-assembly preparation required. 2. Assembling The Frame Head - (use screws from bag marked "head"). Apply SM-8500 acrylic sealant (supplied by SPW). Apply a 1/4" bead of sealant as shown. Install the corner key through the corner gasket and into the aluminum clad keyway on head and jamb cladding. Insert #6 X 1 1/2"self tapping screw into pre-drilled hole to secure the clad corner. Use #7 X 2 1/4" screws to fasten the wood portion together. 4 Assembling The Frame (Continued) Sill - (use screws from bag marked "sill") Apply the double stick sill gasket. When fastening frame to sill, make sure to have solid compression of the gasket. After sill is fastened to the jamb, apply SM-8500 sealant to the underside of sill and sidejamb joint. After sealant is applied, wrap Vycor flashing around the bottom corner of the sill, covering the sealant joint (at least 4" up jamb & 4" across bottom of sill). (see drawing-4) Vycor Flashing Sealant Sill Gasket (drawing-4) Guides for Self-Tapping Screws #7 X 2 1/4" Self-Tapping Screws Head - Install head drip cap. The bottom leg of drip cap will snap into the accessory kerf on the frame. Use a rubber mallet or wood block and hammer to prevent damage to the drip cap. (see drawing-5) Apply butyl corner pad. 5 3. Installing & Flashing the Frame It is the responsibility of the installer / contractor to verify compatibility of sealants, flashing and all envelope membrane drainage system components. It is also the responsibility of the installer / contractor to verify that the floor / subfloor is flat and level prior to installation. If a metal sill pan is used, (recommended) it is the responsibility of the installer / contractor to verify compatibility of metals to eliminate the possibility of galvanic reaction. Dry fit frame to rough opening. Make sure opening specifically the sub floor, or concrete is dry, clean and free of dirt and debris. The sill should be installed flat and straight. The installation of a bi-fold door system requires that the head and jambs are square and straight. We recommend that the head be installed with a slight upward bow 1/8" at the center of door rough opening. (see drawing-7) 3" screws to be used in the head (fill every pre-drilled hole). Clean inside track along roller path. Bottom pivot screws and sealant is all that is required at sill. 6 Clad Frame Installation & Flashing Information Please read Frame & Flashing instructions carefully and thoroughly before starting. Installation of Frame: 1. Check rough opening to insure that opening is level, plumb and square. Verify that width and height dimensions are correct. Rough opening should be ¾ wider than overall frame height and width. Sill plate or concrete slab should be flat and level. Make sure opening, specifically the sub floor (or concrete), is dry, clean and free of dirt and debris. NOTE: Flashing and/or an appropriate method of sealing shall be designed as a part of an overall weather resistive barrier system. It is not the responsibility of the door manufacturer to design or recommend a flashing system appropriate for each job condition. Fig 1 4 Apply two continuous beads of polyurethane sealant across the width of the sill, approximately ½ - 1 inch in from the interior and exterior edges of the RO (see fig 2). The sealant should extend 6 inches up each side of frame members. Set the sill pan in place (see fig 3) and make sure that it is fully seated in the sealant. Flashing material is recommended to be at least 9 wide. Any variance from this installation procedure signifies that proper waterproofing becomes the responsibility of the design professional and/or the installer. 2. Sill pan. strongly recommends the use of a sill pan. 3. An overview of the proper flashing sequence is shown in (see fig 1) Fig 2

7 6. Apply a continuous nominal bead of polyurethane sealant along the backside of the nailing flange along both side jambs and head. Run additional sealant across the 45 joint where the flanges meet (see fig 5). Make sure butyl pad is in good condition and adhering properly. Fig 3 Fig 5 7. Insert and center the bi-fold frame in the rough opening. When doing so, tilt the frame back so that the sill can be set into the opening and onto the sealant. Avoid scraping the sealant off the sill pan (see fig 6). Fig 4 5. Once in place, apply a bead of sealant just above the back corner of the sill pan. The bead should be continuous and extend across the entire length of the sill pan. A discontinuous bead should then be applied near the exterior edge of the sill pan. It is recommended that the door frame be set onto1/8 plastic shims set in the sill pan. (see fig 4) This will allow any water caught by the pan to drain out. Shims should be spaced 1-2 from each end, then approximately every 12 thereafter. Fig 6 8. With the frame set into the rough opening, check to make sure it is centered. Tack the door in place with one 1-1/2 stainless steel (non-corrosive) screw in the top nailing flange within 3-6 of each corner. Make sure that the sill is straight, flat and level. Use a tape measure to measure the horizontal and diagonal dimensions of the frame to

8 ensure the frame is plumb and square (see fig 7). These measurements should be double-checked by using a framing square and level or straight edge to ensure the jambs are straight. Shim at the side jambs as required. Fig 7 9. Once the frame is square, level and plumb, finish securing the nailing flange. 10. Secure the nailing flange to the sheathing with 1-1/2 stainless steel (noncorrosive) screws, beginning 4 inches from the corner and thereafter. Fig The length of the head flashing should equal width of RO + (2x width of the flashing material) + 2. Extend 1 beyond edge of each side flashing (see fig. 9). Attach top edge of flashing to the wall. 11. Place a small amount of polyurethane sealant over each screw head. 12. With the unit completely secured to the structure, apply a bead of polyurethane sealant at the edge of the head jamb nailing flange where it meets the sheathing. Also, apply similar beads of sealant between the edge of the side jamb nailing flange and the sheathing material. Tool the sealant into the joint to ensure the joint is filled. 13. Apply a layer of flashing over the side jamb nailing flange (see fig. 8). The length of the flashing should equal the height of the RO + (2x width of the flashing material) 1. Install the flashing so that the edge contacts the inside corner of the nailing flange. The top of the flashing should extend only 8-1/2 above the top edge of the window frame. Repeat for opposite side. Fig 9

9 4. After The Frame Has Been Installed Refer to your SPW Bi-fold drawing to determine your specific door set-up. Install Wall pivot assembly (Required only if Bi-fold is taller than 88"). Wall Pivot cylinder and screw holes are pre-drilled by SPW. (see drawing-8) You will be required to pre-drill the trimmer prior to installing the wall pivot. (see drawing -8a) Install bottom pivot block assembly. 10 5. Door Panel Preparation Panels are numbered at the top (as shown). Lay out in numerical order (always from left to right.) (see drawing-10) (drawing-10) VIEWED FROM EXTERIOR Install hinges (hinge screws holes are pre-drilled), tighten the screws on the wood side before installing the screw into the clad. Do not over tighten screws into the clad. (see drawing-11) Refer to the legend on the SPW Bi-fold drawing of your door for proper hinge type placement. Secure this screw first. (drawing-11)

11 Door Panel Preparation (Continued) Install mohair weatherstrip on bottom of panels. Slide weatherstrip in from end of aluminum track. Crimp the ends of the aluminum track once weatherstrip is in place. (see drawing 12) Install flush bolts at the top and bottom of the interior face of the panels to which they apply. 12 6. Installing the Panels Always start at the jamb and work towards the center (this may require working inward from both ends). Begin panel installation at the bottom pivot block located at sill. Place 5/16 " shim (supplied by SPW) on top of protected sill, allowing the panel to rest on shim. This helps pre-set the correct height of panel and hinge screw alignment. (see drawing-14) Continue with next panel (drawing-14) Shim 7. After All Panels are Installed Open and close very slowly for the first time! Do not force anything. Make vertical and horizontal adjustments until the panels clear any hangups. Install the weatherstripping for the individual door panels. (see drawing-15) Weatherstrip should butt up against each hinge & be cut flush with the top and bottom of the panels. Adjust the Door Panels 3/16" gap between top of the doors, and the top track. 3/8" gap between the bottom of the doors and the bottom track (not including protective sill covering) 9/32" gap on side panels to frame. (see drawing-17) (drawing-17) 3/16" 3/8" 9/32" Horizontal adjustment is achieved by using a 10" - 12" philips head screwdriver (see drawing-18) Vertical adjustment is achieved by using a 10"-12" standard head screwdriver at the top pivots and carriers (see drawing-19) After final adjustments remove adjustment clips (save for later adjustments). 14 9. Install Interior Stops Install exterior head stop first (stops are shipped rough cut). Place wood blocking against head track. Position exterior head stop 5/16" out from the exterior face of the panel. (see drawing-20) Install weatherstrip into head stop kerf. (see drawing-20a) Place side jamb exterior stop flush with head jamb stop. (see drawing-21) Install strike plate as required. Install door hardware as required. The top of the astragal should be placed flush with the top of the panel. The bottom of the astragal should be approximately 1/8" above the threshold. (see drawing-22) 5/32" 1/8" (drawing-22)
