The venue will be the Oakland Coliseum. Friday, May 4, will be devoted to MRC training which will include; Disaster Mental Health Workshop (our own Dr. Nancy to present), Field Treatment Site set up, UASI (Urban Areas Security Initiative) mobile Cache demonstration, Lessons Learned from Japan Earthquake, Austere Medical Care, Medical Unit Organization and Response, USAR (Urban Search And Rescue Medical Operations) Medical Operations, Personal Deployment Equipment, Wound Treatment. Saturday, May 5, will include more training and the exercise. The Scenario will be a large Earthquake on the Hayward Fault with lots of damage, deaths and injuries with Oakland requesting MRC Mutual Aid from throughout the Bay Area. We are limiting the number of participants to 42 and this roster has already been filled. David Stainbrook and his Logistics Crew will be taking our FTS trailer to set up for "Show & Tell." The Plan is to park our cars in the Macy's Northgate parking lot and commute by Bus. Continued on page 3. It will stay cold up to a week. Brian Waterbury MMRC Program Manager Message from the Program Manager It is with great pleasure that we present this first issue of the MMRC newsletter. It has been my pleasure to be the program manager for the last six years and having a newsletter has been one of my goals since my first day on the job. This goal has finally been achieved. It will be a great resource for us to keep all of you informed of MMRC happenings. We have great plans for the 2012 year. Among our goals is the recruitment of new volunteers and the retention of the ones we have. I would like to see an increase of 10% of our membership by the end of December. Another goal is to improve our training offerings. We plan to continue with our basic trainings of Basic, S.T.A.R.T. Triage, but we also want to provide more advanced training that is tailored to the kind of response the MMRC needs to provide in an actual public health disaster or emergency. The best kind of training is experiential like that in the up-coming May 4 5, 2012 exercise in Oakland. Finally, we plan to increase our community contacts this year, particularly in the areas of public health education and immunization. We want to be in the forefront of public health rather than wait for a public health emergency. We want to work to create a healthier community for all Marin residents. MMRC NEWS

3 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 PAGE 3 MRC National Summit in Nashville, TN, May 21-25, 2012 We are pleased to announce that six of our MMRC will be attending the up-coming Medical Reserve Corps Summit in Nashville, TN, May 21 25, They are Sharlyne Balano, RN, Bob Bundy, MD, Loretta Rogers, MH, Katherine Shotwell, RN, Gauri Tandavan, Logs, and Bill Teufel, MD. Outstanding Volunteer of 2011 Named MMRC Volunteer of the Year for 2011, David Stainbrook has spent countless hours working on the FTS Trailers and stepped up to a lead position when help was needed to prepare the first aid packs. He is extremely responsible and always reliable with a positive and uplifting attitude. A resident of Corte Madera, he is an EMT instructor at Indian Valley College, a member of the Ross Valley American Legion and a Marin County Fire Department volunteer summer lookout, manning posts on both Mt. Tam and Mt. Barnabe. David has earned the esteem of his fellow MMRC volunteers for his outstanding and selfless work in the last year. You must 1) be registered in DHV, 2) have a valid, up to date MMRC Photo ID, 3) have a valid, up to date DSW card, 4) attend BOTH days, 5) commute on the bus from Northgate Mall over and back. Unit Leader for the second exercise. Thirty-seven healthcare professionals from all over the United States participated in this class. It took 37 people, 4 hours to decontaminate 50 patients. Imagine how many people it would take to continue decontamination for 24 hours or more. Speaking remember to develop and practice your family disaster plan. New Requirements for MMRC Membership As of this year, we are asking all volunteers to donate a minimum of 16 hours per year. These hours can be earned by attending MMRC meetings, trainings, exercises, drills, work parties or by doing your on-line training in IS 100 or IS 700. If you are getting additional train- ing directly related to emergency preparedness, that may count as well. Contact Brian Waterbury at bwaterbury@marincounty.org to discuss. The Leadership team consists of the MMRC Program Manager, all the branch directors, the deputy branch directors and the volunteer administrative assistants. However, any MMRC member can attend. Come early as the doors are locked at 5PM.

Approximately 70 members were in attendance where various speakers including Brian Waterbury reported on the accomplishments of the MMRC during Sheila Martin, State MRC Coordinator, provided an overview of the MRC s throughout California. David Stainbrook was honored with the Outstanding Volunteer of 2011 award. MMRC has experienced an increase in number of volunteers in the last four years. Between 2008 and 2011 MMRC membership increased from 275 to 375 members. We look forward to 2012 in which we plan to increase our numbers by at least 10%. We call on our volunteers to reach this goal It s Our Fault By: Flo de Losada As you know we need to be prepared before we can help others. As a member of the Marin Medical Reserve Corps, it s part of our responsibility to have disaster supplies in our home, vehicle and work place. Have a plan set up ahead of time with your family, so when you get that call out from the County you will be prepared. First Aid Pack Project MMRC volunteers have prepared 85 First Aid packs which are being distributed to selected volunteers based on amount of engagement.

5 PAGE 5 Marin Medical Reserve Corps Foundation The MMRC Foundation is a 501C3 non-profit corporation developed to augment and support the efforts of the Marin Medical Reserve Corps. The foundation is governed by volunteer residents that work closely with the Marin Medical Reserve Corps volunteers that are managed by an independent contractor provided by the county. Because the Marin Medical Reserve Corps Foundation is a non-profit entity, separate from the county government, it can accept donations directly and apply them to citizen medical disaster preparedness. The Foundation s Board and their constituents (volunteer medical personnel, donors, and concerned citizens of our community) will determine where and how to spend the monies received. Foundation Focus The MMRCF is very excited to be the recipient of a $5000 grant from Marin County at the requested of Supervisor Susan Adams. The funds will be used to purchase 3 AEDs for our trailers. On April 20th the Foundation will be holding its first speaking engagement for the California Retired Public Employee Association of Marin to explain the purpose of the MMRCF, its importance to the community and its needs. Future speaking engagements are in the planning stages. CPR/AED for the Healthcare Provider (American Heart Association Certification) On May 9 training in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) through the American Heart Association is being held from 5:30PM until 9:30PM at Salvation Army Office, Corner of Mary & 4th St., San Rafael, Ca. 6 PAGE 6 MMRC to Participate in Tdap Clinic Saturday April 21Marin County Public Health Preparedness and Public Health Nursing will sponsor a Tdap Clinic for sixth graders going in to the seventh grade at Davidson Middle School, 280 Woodland Ave. in San Rafael. The event is scheduled from 9AM until 3PM with approximately 250 doses of available vaccine. Lunch will be provided. State law dictates that all 7-12 grade students show proof of having a Tdap booster or waiver prior to the school year starting. For this event MMRC is looking for the volunteers for the following positions: a Medical Director (Physician); 3 Greeter/ Registrars (either medical or nonmedical); 4 Logistics (either medical or nonmedical); 2 Line Monitors (either medical or non-medical; 4 Vaccinators (medical); and 1 Special Services (either medical or nonmedical).
