1 1 Coastal Pines Technical College Practical Nursing Program Competitive Admission Criteria Coastal Pines Technical College (CPTC) offers the Practical Nursing (PN12) Diploma Program at five locations; Waycross, Jesup, Brunswick (Golden Isles), Alma, and Baxley. Students are admitted to the Practical Nursing Program on a competitive basis with the following criteria: 1. CPTC Admission a. Submit a completed CPTC Application with application fee. b. Submit an official high school transcript or GED transcript. c. Submit official transcripts of all post-secondary institutions, colleges or universities attended. d. Be at least 17 years of age. e. Meet the following assessment requirements (COMPASS minimum test scores): Reading 70 Writing 32 Numerical Practical Nursing (PN12) Diploma Program Application a. Submit a Practical Nursing (PN12) Program application indicating choices of one or two locations (Waycross, Jesup, Brunswick (Golden Isles), Baxley or Alma). If two locations are chosen, indicate first and second preferences. b. Choose a cohort. An evening cohort may be chosen only for Waycross Campus. c. Submit completed program application to Student Affairs. Applications must be submitted no later than the first scheduled class day of the academic term prior to the start of the program. For example, students who are applying to start the program during the Fall semester must submit their program applications no later than the first scheduled class day of the Summer term. 3. Health Care Assistant (HCA) Technical Certificate of Credit (TCC) a. Students who intend to apply for the Practical Nursing Program are required to enroll in the HCA TCC Program. b. Students must have successfully completed the HCA TCC Program or enrolled in the final courses of the program and have a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 before applying for admission into the Practical Nursing Program.

2 2 4. Core Courses Requirements a. HCA TCC Program core courses are: COMP 1000, Computer Applications, 3 credit hours ENGL 1010, Fundamentals of English I, 3 credit hours MATH 1012, Fundamentals of Mathematics, 3 credit hours PSYC 1010, Basic Psychology, 3 credit hours ALHS 1011, Structure and Function of the Human Body, 5 credit hours ALHS 1040, Introduction to Health Care, 3 credit hours ALHS 1090, Medical Terminology for Allied Health Sciences, 2 credit hours b. In addition, students must complete one of the occupational specializations and earn a minimum grade of C in the required courses. Options include the following: Nurse Aid: ALHS 1060 and NAST 1100 Phlebotomy (option 2): PHLT 1030 and PHLT 1050 Medical Assisting: ALHS 1060, BUSN 1100 and BUSN 1440 c. Applicants must complete ALHS, NAST and COMP courses within 60 months prior to the start of the academic term of the requested Practical Nursing Program. There is no time limit on ENGL 1010, MATH 1012 and PSYC d. Applicants, who earn credit for ALHS 1011 by completing degree level Anatomy & Physiology courses, must complete both Anatomy & Physiology I with lab and Anatomy & Physiology II with lab courses with a minimum final grade of C in all courses. Grades earned for lecture and lab courses will be calculated into the GPA for selection, 5. Grade Point Average (GPA) a. Minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) is 2.75 for ALHS 1011, ALHS 1060, ENGL 1010, MATH 1012, and PSYC b. The overall minimum GPA is 2.5 for the HCA TCC. c. HCA core courses that will be included in the GPA calculations are ALHS 1040, ALHS 1090, and COMP Each of these courses must be completed with a minimum grade of C. d. The final grade from each course attempted will be calculated in the GPA. e. Transfer courses will be included in the GPA calculation by using the grade received from the transfer institution.

3 3 f. Course credits earned by exemption testing will not be factored into the GPA. Should the credit exemption be for ALHS 1011, ALHS 1060, ENGL 1010, MATH 1012, or PSYC 1010; the GPA calculation will be adjusted to exclude the exempted course from the calculation. For example, if a student takes an exemption test for ALHS 1060 and receives credit for that course by exemption, only ALHS 1011, ENGL 1010, MATH 1012, and PSYC 1010 will be included in the GPA calculation for competitive selection. 6. TEAS Exam a. Students must take the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) exam. Scores will be recorded in Banner (College s permanent student record) under TEST SCORES. Students may take this exam no more than two times per year. The highest score recorded in Banner will be included in the acceptance process. b. The TEAS test is offered several times during year. c. Students should register to take the TEAS through the Economic Development Department. Contact information, dates, times, and locations of administration are published on the CPTC website. d. The TEAS test must be completed by the first scheduled class day during the term prior to program cohort start. For example, if a student is applying for fall term, the TEAS test must be completed by the first scheduled class day of summer term. 7. Program Selection a. Selections will be competitive for each cohort and each location as shown in the chart below. Selections will be based on a composite score of 100 percent: weight of 30 percent for TEAS exam results. weight of 70 percent for GPA of specific courses in the HCA TCC: ALHS 1011 ALHS 1060 ENGL 1010 MATH 1012 PSYC 1010 These courses must be completed by the first scheduled class day during the term prior to application. For example, if a student is applying for fall term, these courses must be completed by the first scheduled class day of summer term.

4 4 b. Applicants must be currently enrolled in the final courses or have completed the HCA TCC. c. Applicants who are not selected for the Practical Nursing Program will be encouraged to consider applying for other Allied Health programs. d. Practical Nursing Program Applications will be reviewed and applicants who have met the admission requirements will be ranked according to their composite GPA and TEAS score, requested constructional site, and cohort preference as recorded on their application. (Composite score is defined in paragraph 6.a. above) f. Applicants who meet the requirements will be ranked on a range from highest to lowest. The student with the highest composite score, along with consideration of requested location and requested cohort will be ranked first; the student with the lowest composite score will be ranked last. g. The list of applicants will be reviewed, compiled and ranked by Student Affairs.. The ranked list of applicants will be approved by the Practical Nursing Program Director, the Dean of Allied Health, and the Vice President for Student Affairs. h. Seats in the selected cohort will be offered to the first ranked applicant and offers for seating will continue down the list until all seats are filled. Should there be a tie

5 5 for the final seat with more than one applicant having the same composite score; the applicant with the highest TEAS score will be offered the seat. i. Students will be mailed acceptance letters and will be required to attend a mandatory orientation meeting. Students who are sent an acceptance letter and fail to attend this meeting will lose their seat in the cohort accepted. This seat will be offered to another student. Should a student receive an acceptance letter and fail to attend the orientation, he or she may reapply for the next nursing cohort offered. Acceptance will be competitive, therefore failure to accept a seat offered in one cohort does not guarantee acceptance in subsequent cohort selections. 8. Readmission a. Students will only be allowed to compete for readmission to the program once within a 5 year period. For example, a student is accepted into a Fall 2014 cohort but fails a course in the program. Next, he or she reapplies and is accepted for a Spring 2016 cohort and fails a course during that cohort. The student must wait 5 years from the term that he or she last enrolled in the Practical Nursing program to reapply for a third acceptance into the program.. b. Should a student fail or withdraw from any practical nursing (PNSG) course, he or she must reapply for a second admission. c. Students accepted for readmission must repeat all nursing (PNSG) courses. d. For readmission ALHS 1011 and ALHS 1060 must also be repeated if they have exceeded the 60 month requirement.
