Rotations A and D 4-2 Serve Reception Patterns for Elementary teams & = Setters & 2 = Middles & = Power 4 5 Rotations B and D Setter left cup Rules. must be closer to the net than, ahead of and ahead of. Front row must be in order left to right. Same with the back row. For easy placement, players form a cup shape and have to pass more or less in their lane. Specialization is implied here. Setter should be setting from the right side of the net, the middle goes to the middle once the ball goes over the net and the P s go to the left side. Setter Middle Cup Study the diagrams for the 5-1 system when the setter is in the front row to see where everone goes once the ball is served in preparation to attack. Rotation C and F Setter Right Cup By putting to the left they can attack in their best position. The middle player has easy access to the middle of the court but, by rule, must be to the left of Note: These are general suggestions. There a dozen variations based mostly on the age, ability, experience and skill of your players. The 4-2 system designation implies that the setter in the front court is setting. Repeat the above patterns for rotations D, E, and F with the other setter. CONSIDERATIONS Organize so setter has shortest possible runs to position Put the best passers in the pattern. M s to pass if are better than P. Can move to 3 players passing if that is better for the team. Middles are usually a bit bigger than powers. 2
Rotations A and D 6-2 Serve Reception Patterns for Middle School and Junior High School Teams STAITEP ONE Players in 4 and 3 move back and to left half of the court The two non-setter back court players move to the right. = Best Setter = Best Middle = Best Power Rotations B and D JAWS Players in 4 and 2 go to left half of the court. between and in front of and to allow setter to move further to the right Rotation C and F STAITEP TWO The players in 3 and 2 move to the left half of the court Setter deeper that and as far right as possible. Repeat the above patterns for rotations D, E, and F. Same names. ADVANTAGES - Setter has much shorter runs Right handed attackers on the left half of the court. Easy transition to 3 player passing patterns if required More setters being developed at junior level. 3
Rotation D Serve Reception Patterns for 5-1 Offensive Systems Key Concepts: 1. Option (not shown) play ahead of the setter and behind the setter. Three Players Passing: moves to left half of the court Key Concepts: 1. Setter has shortest possible run 2. Best passers in the pattern 3. Right handed front court player positioned on left half of court = Best Setter = Best Middle = Best Power Rotation E Option Rotation F Rotation E out of pattern. to pass 2-3 points scored, go to option with passing and deeper somewhere Rotation F May need to involve back court attacking in this rotation. 4
Rotation A Serve Reception Patterns for 5-1 Offensive Systems Key Concepts: 1. Best middle on one side of the setter and best power on the other side. 2. Get best players on the net early in the game. Start setter in 5 = Best Setter = Best Middle = Best Power Three Players Passing: and move to left half of the court Setter deeper that but close to setting position Key Concepts: 1. Setter has shortest possible run 2. Best passers in the pattern 3. Right handed front court player positioned on left half of court Rotation B Rotation B to left half of court with easy access to a set to power Two steps to position for setter Rotation C Rotation C Could use instead of as an option This model uses in front of the setter and behind. This may work with the combination of players that you have. If you find that you are losing a lot of points in some rotations you can rearrange the rotations by moving behind the setter and distribute the others appropriately. Consider: 1) When you have you str ongest net, blocking and or attacking or both, you should have your most consistent server serving to maximize points in this rotation. 2) Track points scored aganst each rotation during5 tournament play.
Phase 1 The Seven Phases Phase 1 Serve Reception Use the service reception patterns appropriate to the age and skill level and offensive system of your team. See serve reception diagrams for 4-2, 5-1 and 6-2. Generic Line-up Serve reception positioning for 3 players passing. Setter signals the player where they are to attack. Prime considerations: 1. where does the player attack best and 2. where do they play defence. Secondary considerations: 1. the other team s blockers 2. who is the hot hitter and 3. what s the score. Phase 2 - Move to attack preparation Phase 2 Move to Attacking Positions Players move to their positions to prepare for the attack. The choices of preparation positions will vary depending upon the age and skill level of the players and of the coach. Younger teams start outside the side line (). Some high school and club teams use the DOT system of offensive preparation. See dot system support document. Phase 3 Generic attack position preparation without specific system placement for the purposes of this explanation. Hut Yes May Phase 3 Attackers Attack. Front court and back court. The front court players call out their attack option choice and so do the back court players and then attack as if the ball was being set to all of attackers. See the set names diagram. C Pipe The pass flies toward the ideal setter area as the attackers move to the attack preparation positions according to the system chosen by the coach. They call out their preferred attack option. Setter picks who to set. 6
Phase 4 - Cover the attacker. Dig the ball following rejection by the blockers. Phase 4 Coverage of attack and switch to defensive positions Players move forward and cover around the attack location by trying to create triangles with their positioning. All players must split step wherever they are at the time the ball is contacted by the hitter. When the ball crosses the net the players move to their home positions on defence. Home positions are set by the defensive system chosen by the coach. Try to make triangles. Split step. Move quickly to home defensive positions. Phase 5 - Move to defensive positions and analyze opponent's attack options Phase 5 Analyze the opposition s preparation for attack As soon as the ball goes past the block, the player move to their defensive positions to prepare for the front court defensive response: blocking, and the back court defensive response: digging. 6-up Defense The diagram below shows the home defense, phase 5, for the 6-up defense. It is probably best to use the setter who is in the back court to be the 6 up player. They are usually a bit quicker than the other players and react more quickly to the ball which is why you picked them to set. There are a number of options on defence. Coach will need to chose defence that is best for the team. This is a Perimeter defence option. - 2 meters from sideline. Zone block opponent's offside attack. Keep the ball from going x-court to where the back court setter is playing defence. - Backcourt at the tee and on the sideline. - Middle of the net - 1 meter from the end line in the middle of the court. - Setter is at the right side tee and on the sideline. - Could be a setter or a right side player. If you choose a 6-2 system both setters should be able to attack and block. If both setters are small then it would probably be best to play a 5-1 with a taller right side player who can attack and block. 7
Phase 6 - Move from home positions to defensive position dictated by the opponent s choice from the attack options. These diagrams show a 6 back perimeter defence. Position 6 moves in the same direction as the front court middle and positions themselves in the seam of the block. If front court right side blocker is small then position 6 would go closer to the line to dig balls hit over the head of the smaller blocker. Phase 6 Movement to defence in response to opponent s attack choice. 6-back system As soon as the ball is set to an attacking location, the blockers move to position to block with the remaining front court player(s) getting off of the net to dig the cross court hit or tip. The back court moves to their positions according to the defensive strategy chosen by the coach. Free Ball Attack from Power Attack from Middle Attack from Weak Side Players move off the net, pass the ball and move to attack preparation positions. Players move to block then move off the net and move to attack preparation positions. digs line Players move to block then move off the net and move to attack preparation positions. This is a double block option. reads the set. Ball close to setter moves to left. Players move to block then move off the net and move to attack preparation positions. OR OR Players move to block then move off the net, dig the ball and move to attack preparation positions. This option has the player dig cross court. Single middle block option. 8
Phase 6 - Move from home positions to defensive position dictated by the opponent s choice from the attack options. These diagrams show a 6-up defence. This defense is useful for young teams whose movement skills are in development. This defense covers the corners with less movement required than 6-back defense. Phase 6 6-up Defense Movement to defence in response to opponent s attack choice. As soon as the ball is set to an attacking location, the blockers move to position to block with the remaining front court player(s) getting off of the net to dig the cross court hit or tip. The back court moves to their positions according to the defensive strategy chosen by the coach. Free Ball Attack from Power Attack from Middle Attack from Weak Side Players move off the net, pass the ball to the setter. This example shows 4-2 system with front court setter. Players move to attack preparation positions as the ball is passed to the setter. Players move to block then move off the net and move to attack preparation positions. and dig the corners. Solo block by the middle player. Wingers move to cover tip angles. Setter goes back to the net to set. and cover their corners. After attack, moves off net to prepare to counter-attack move left to block with. moves behind block. and cover corners. digs angle. For this one you will need to practice who will set the ball if has to dig the ball. will need to know where to go and will need to know where try to pass so the can set it. The 6-up has some advantages when playing against teams that never swing and only tip the ball or put it over on first contact. Be sure to train the 6-up player to move to the right on free balls so that they do not get in the way of the middle player who is moving off the net to attack. Skills and tactics wise, it is probably best to use the setter who is in the back row as the full time 6- up digger. This makes the setter who is in the back court available to set when the setter in the front court has to play floor defense on the first ball. The corners are better defended with less movement by the players. Try to have the same player play the same corners all the time so that they get used to the angles for passing. The player in the right back corner, I put the middle player here, must be able to pass the ball to the setter on the right end of the net no matter where the attack is coming from. Remember to have the digger face the attacker and use the platform angle of the arms to make the ball go to the desired location. 9
Phase 7 - Digger digs the ball as attackers move to attack preparation positions and are now back in Phase 2 and the cycle repeats until the ball is terminated. Phase 7 Dig the ball and move to Phase 2 - Attackers to attack preparation positions. How to Use the Seven Phases Teaching Progression. Phase 5 - Move to defensive positions and analyze opponent's attack options Free Ball Players move off the net, pass the ball and move to attack preparation positions. This process begins at the first practice with the team. The first session should be 15 minutes long. Repeat and extend at subsequent practices. 1. Start the teaching progression with Phase 5 where the left side (powers) are on the left side, the middles are in the middle and the setters or the setter and right side players are on the right side in home positions. 2. Teach the player the starting position on defence, phase 5, that coach considers best for the team. See diagrams for perimeter defence as a starting point. You can do this with players and a shadows meaning there are two players in the starting position, two players in the starting position etc. so that all the players on the team are working on learning the movements at the same time and helping each other remember each response. Whenever you want them to return to home positions, yell out Phase 5. Every now and then call this positioning defence so that they get that concept as well. 3. Teach the players the desired movements for free ball first. Repeat several (many) times using the footwork that works i.e. open-cross-hop, until the movement is smooth. Yell 5 (home) then yell the number 6 followed by free ball i.e. yell 6 free. 4. Verify that the players move to the correct places and then yell 5 again so they return to home positions. 5. When free ball movement is stable teach the movements for attacks from power, middle and weak side using the same method of teaching the movements, yell 6 power and after they respond correctly then yell 5 for them to return home. When 10
Strong and playing strong teams most of the points are scored in the rallies so it is important to be able to get to phase 5 and rally the ball. Strong team vs weaker team - most points are scored when serving followed by blocking for points or off of the high frequency of free balls and counter attaxk. they move to the blocking location they will block. No need to teach them all the responses on the same day. Each time verify that the footwork is what you are looking for. 6. Next, put 6 players on one side of the net and the shadows on the other. Yell 6 power, 6 Free in some random order and verify that all players continue to move to the correct position using the correct footwork. 7 Next teach the Defensive Ballet. The players on both sides of the net in their defensive home positions. The middle now move off the net indicating free ball and the rest of the players will move accordingly. All players go back to 5. The Middles now moves to block in power and the rest move accordingly. Each team is paying attention to what the middle on THEIR side of the net is doing. The only time the middle says anything is when the attack is in the middle so that the right side player knows to go and block with the middle player. When the right side players goes to block with the middle the backcourt middle moves to one corner or the other out of the shadow of the block. There is no attacker to tell them in which direction the ball will be hit so just alternate corners for now. This is so that the players get their cues from player movement and eventually from what the ball tells them to do. It is a good idea to have them yell where the attack is coming from. When the middle moves to defend the power attack the rest of the players yell Power. 8. The team has now been working together for several practices learning to pass, serve, some defensive skills including blocking skills and floor defence skills, as well as attacking skills including the approach and arm swing mechanics. The setters have identified themselves and have been working on setting and setter movement. When these things are in place enough, they should be ready to add the counter attack in the movement progression. 9. Start in Phase 5 and yell six seven power. This means - 1. move to the blocking and floor defence positions 2. assume the ball is dug, move to the attack preparation positions that the coach has decided is best for the team using good footwork, 3. call the name of the attack option that they want. 4. The setter has moved to their position and will simulate a set. 5. The attackers will attack using the correct footwork, jump technique and arm swing. Within a few repeats they are likely to make it all show up in the actual rhythm of the game. 10. Next, with players in phase 5 on both sides of the net add the ball. Depending upon the age and skill level you may choose to start with throw and catch so that the players have time to make the correct response. The coach tosses the ball to a back court passer who 11
Generic Line-up Phase 3 Phase 1 Serve reception positioning for 3 players passing. Phase 2 - Move to attack preparation Generic attack position preparation without specific system placement for the purposes of this explanation. Hut C Yes Pipe May catches and holds the ball while the rest move to attack preparation and the other team prepares to yell the attack location and move accordingly. The ball is tossed to the setter who catches the ball. The ball is the tossed to one of the attackers who catches it. The defence now moves to Phase 6, the ball is thrown over the net and is caught by one of the players on the receiving team. Front row players move to attack position, ball throw to the setter, players attack, catch the ball and throw it over the net right to somebody. 11. Next, add the passing and setting and controlled attacking as soon as the team is ready and play rallies. How teach Phases 1 to Decide on the serve receive patterns that you plan to use. This, of course depends upon the offensive system that you plan to use, 4-2, 6-2 or 5-1. See Serve Receive support document. 2. Decide on the rotational order that is best for this team and teach the serve receive patterns to the players using shadows in the beginning. 3. From Phase 1, Serve Receive, clap your hands to simulate the serve, they fake a passing motion, (Phase 2) and move to attack preparation position (Phase 3) according to the system chosen by the coach. Setter gets to their position and the attackers attack. Players can simulate block coverage (Phase 4) around a a player designated by the coach as the attacker for that repeat and then the players switch to Phase 5. This switching part is usually confusing for the first while but just keep reminding the players that as soon as the ball goes over the net they are to go to where they played in Phase 5 for all those repeats i.e. powers on the left front and back, middles in the middle front and back and setters or right side players on the right side. Lots of repeats with reinforcement is required. 4. Next, put 6 players on one side of the net in the rotational order that you have selected. Have them set up the serve receive pattern for that rotation. The rest of the team is one the other side of the net already in Phase Coach serves or throws the ball over the net right to a player who passes it to the setter who sets it to an attacker who attacks. The defensive team responds with the correct movement and, if possible, digs the ball and the rally continues. The serve receive team switches to defence and responds to the attack. 6. If the defensive team does not dig the ball the coach can choose to toss a ball to the setter so that the setter can set it for the attacker to attack and the team to play defence. 7. When the serve receive team has switched to defence the coach can yell Free and the team will move off As the pass flies toward the ideal setter area the attackers move to the attack preparation positions according to the system chosen by the coach. They call out their preferred attack option. Setter picks who to set. 12
Serving - Rotation positions to Phase 5 the net, pass the free ball tossed by the coach and attack against the defence. Generic Line-up When Our Team is Serving 1. The team organizes themselves to minimize their movement by getting as close to their defensive positions as possible without being out of rotation. 2. The server can go wherever they want along the end line without being out of rotation. It s best to have the left side players server from the left side so they can get to defence without having to get through the traffic and similarly with middles from the middle and right side and setter from the right side. 3. Basically they go from their rotational order positioning to Phase No player passes between the middle player and the net so that the middle player can block overpasses without anyone getting in the way. Points to Ponder: Whatever you teach first is what will stick the hardest with the players so teach whatever you are teaching correctly the first time around. This applies to technical and tactical elements. It means that the coach must prepare well for all practices and accurately assess the capabilities of the players. For example if you start by teaching a 4-2, to make it easy for the players early in the season, but your plan is to switch to 5-1or 6-2 later in the season you will find making the switch much harder than you expect. The players will feel secure in the first system you teach and changing it is difficult. Struggle with the 5-1 or 6-2 early in the season with the goal of being dead smooth by the end of the season. Generally, the players enjoy the challenge. Avoid underestimating what the players are capable of learning and doing. Just because they are young does not mean that they cannot learn whatever you are able to teach them. Stretch them. Start your teaching/coaching with the end in mind and work toward that end. Start the hard stuff early. If it s hard it takes longer to learn so start early rather than taking it off the list. Good Luck with your teaching, coaching, and with your season. There is a significant difference between teaching and coaching. Discuss. 13
