4 Siddhartha Gautama - founder of Buddhism around the late 500s BC - dissatisfied by Hinduism - born a wealthy prince in northern India (Kshatriya Caste) - observed the hardships that others faced - began to ask questions about the meaning of life - at 30 he began to travel around India to question priests and wise men - did not find the answers he wanted

5 Enlightenment - desire to free his mind from daily concerns - fasting and meditation - at Gaya, several weeks of deep meditation gave him the answers he was looking for under tree, later called Tree of Wisdom - believed that human suffering came from - wanting what we like but do not have - wanting to keep what we like and already have - not wanting what we dislike but have - First Sermon description of his ideas - began to be called the Buddha or the Enlightened One - traveled across India to spread his teachings summarizing- what did the Buddha conclude about the cause of suffering? Wanting what we do not have, wanting to keep what we like and already have, and not wanting what we dislike but have elaborate- why did the Buddha s teachings about nirvana appeal to many people of lower castes? They were assured that their low social rank was not a barrier to enlightenment and that they had the power to change their lives

6 Buddhist Teachings - reflected many ideas from Hinduism - act morally and treat others well - reincarnation - those who failed to reach nirvana, had to be reborn - people should overcome their desire for material goods - but, be reasonable - no starvation or unnecessary pain -identify- what is nirvana? -contrast- how is right thought different from right actions? A state of perfect peace right though refers to beliefs, whereas right action has to do with how we put beliefs and thought into action -evaluate- what advantage do you think the Buddha saw in following the middle way? extreme behavior of any kind is not helpful or healthy.

8 Differences from Hinduism - rejected animal sacrifice - challenged ideas in the Vedas and the authority of the Brahmins - rituals not necessary for enlightenment - opposed to the caste system - gained him support from the lower castes and untouchables - had the power to change their lives Checking 1. 10 Spread of Buddhism - India - spread quickly because the teachings were easy to understand - within 200 years had spread to most of India - Asoka - powerful Indian king in the 200s BC - converted to Buddhism - built Buddhist temples and schools - sent missionaries to other parts of Asia - Beyond India - Buddhist communities in Central Asia and Persia - China, Korea and Japan by the Silk Road -explain- what is one reason why Buddhism spread quickly? Buddha s teachings were popular and easy to understand
