1 Annual Report 2013 The National University of Ireland, Galway & University of Limerick (NUIG-UL) SPIE student chapter was established by postgraduate students from the Tissue Optics and Microcirculation Imaging Group, Applied Optics Group, National Centre for Laser Applications and the Physics Department of University of Limerick. The aim of the chapter is to bring together people with common interests in the fields of optics and related disciplines, to organise events and activities, and to promote optics in the universities and the wider community. Biophotonics and Imaging Conference (BioPIC 2013) The Biophotonics and Imaging conference (BioPIC) 2013 was held in Dublin from 25 th to 27 th March 2013.

2 Biophotonics and Imaging Conference (BioPIC 2013) The Biophotonics and Imaging conference (BioPIC) 2013 was held in Dublin from 25 th to 27 th March The conference was organised by Tissue Optics and Microcirculation Imaging Group (Head: Prof. Martin Leahy), National University of Ireland, Galway, National Biophotonics and Imaging Platform Ireland, Royal College of Surgeons Ireland and NUIG-UL SPIE student chapter. BioPIC 2013 brought an international group of interdisciplinary scientists together to discuss advances in imaging technologies and their applications to healthcare and disease. Those in attendance included research leaders who are shaping global bio-imaging and researchers developing new imaging techniques. By bringing those with high impact biological problems to solve together with those developing sensing and imaging solutions, BioPIC 2013 stimulated discussions on innovative solutions for discovery and treatment. Keynote speakers were Daniel Choquet (FRANCE), Filipe Barros (CHILE), Sergio Grinstein (CANADA) and Patrice Mollard (FRANCE).

Prof. Alexandre Douplik Visited NUIG-UL SPIE Chapter Prof. Alexandre Douplik of Ryerson University, Canada visited the NUIG-UL SPIE chapter in March 2013.

5 Prof. Alexandre Douplik Visited NUIG-UL SPIE Chapter Prof. Alexandre Douplik of Ryerson University, Canada visited the NUIG-UL SPIE chapter in March He gave short course on Development of Surface enhanced Raman Fiber Probes for Optical Biopsy. He also attended the Biophotonics and Imaging Conference 2013 in Dublin co organized by our chapter. His visit was funded by SPIE (visiting lecturer). Prof. Steve Jacques Visited NUIG-UL SPIE Chapter Prof. Steve Jacques of Oregon Health and Science University visited the NUIG-UL SPIE chapter in October/November 2013 for the second time. He gave talk on Probing nano-, micro- and meso-architecture of tissues using light scattering, and probing biomolecules using light absorption, fluorescence, and non-linear effects. He also gave short courses on wide range of topics: tissue optical properties, spectroscopy/imaging, Monte Carlo simulations of light transport, photochemical interactions, photo thermal interactions, and photomechanical interactions. His visit was organised by NUIG-UL SPIE chapter.

NUIG-UL SPIE Student Chapter Recruitment Sessions SPIE NUIG-UL student chapter recruitment sessions were organized in January and September 2013.

7 Planned Activities for 2014 Haroon Zafar and Roshan Dsouza of NUIG-UL SPIE chapter will attend the SPIE BiOS (Photonics West) in San Francisco from 1 st to 6 th Feburary June will see Biophotonics & Imaging Graduate Summer School (BIGSS) 2014 in Galway. This school will be organized by Tissue Optics and Microcirculation Imaging group and NUIG-UL SPIE chapter. A number of NUIG-UL SPIE chapter members will visit the other SPIE chapters in Ireland. NUIG-UL SPIE chapter recruitment sessions will be organized twice a year. Other events and activities will also be planned for the coming year.
