Certifying the integrity of CPD for all sectors

How to meet and influence in a pro-active CPD context Continuing Professional Development In a time of rapid technological change, fast-changing consumer needs and continuously evolving working practices, people are increasingly aware of the importance of training to enhance skills and stay effective. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is the term used to describe the commitment to lifelong learning, a skill that is invaluable to all segments of society. Employers and institutions across sectors are increasingly adopting CPD as a structured approach to learning to retain key staff, develop skills & knowledge within the organisation to maintain a sustainable and competitive advantage. Delivering effective CPD Continuing Professional Development can be delivered in different ways, from industry-specific seminars to workshops, training courses, presentations, conferences & structured events. If you provide knowledge to professionals with CPD obligations there are many benefits to accrediting your materials to CPD guidelines. There is an expectation for professionals to undertake Continuing Professional Development regardless of career level, job role and responsibilities. The CPD Certification Service support companies to formalise their expertise into a structured and recognised approach to learning which can be applied to individual CPD requirements. The CPD Certification Service Established in 1996 as the UK independent CPD accreditation authority The CPD Certification Service works to support the Continuing Professional Development policies of professional bodies and institutions. Organisations looking to take advantage of CPD join as members to have materials impartially reviewed and accredited. The CPD Certification Service supports organisations across UK, Europe and the rest of the world, ranging from small training & consultancy firms to multi-national companies, local authorities and councils, national associations, universities and colleges.

Becoming a CPD Member Organisation Organisations from all sectors become CPD Members. Membership provides organisations with key features outlined below to support the successful delivery of CPD objectives. Please see the membership table to evaluate what level is suited to your CPD requirements. If you are unsure about what level of membership is best suited, please contact us on to discuss in more detail. Benefits of CPD Membership Membership displays organisational commitment to provide practical CPD to a recognised & benchmarked standard of quality and integrity. Displaying the CPD symbols on materials and events validates the learning for individual CPD requirements. There are 450+ professional bodies & associations that require CPD from members, estimated at over 4 million of the UK population. Accredited CPD enables you to support professionals with personal development. Membership benefits include:- Submission and certification of activities for recognised independent CPD accreditation. This includes events, seminars, e-learning, training workshops and conferences Licence to use the CPD Member, Affiliate or Registered Presenter logo on organisational materials for internal and external marketing use (depending on membership) Licence to apply the CPD Certified symbol on all approved training materials, certificates of attendance/completion and related event materials. Listed in the CPD Member Directory for website users to search CPD specialists and contact you directly Ability to publicise certified events on the CPD Event Calendar, which includes Google Maps, directions and contact facilities CPD Membership Table Membership Type No. Material Submission CPD Member Directory CPD Event Calendar CPD Member CPD Affiliate Registered Presenter CPD Certified Corporate Member 15 p.a Corporate Plus (30) 30 p.a Corporate Plus (50) 50 p.a Bespoke Member 50+ p.a Affiliate Organisation 4 p.a Registered Presenter 1 p.a One-off Certification 1 Charity Member 15 p.a

Reach new audiences and provide effective learning opportunities Recognised CPD Accreditation The undertaking of CPD activities ensures that both academic and practical qualifications do not become out dated or obsolete. The importance of CPD is to keep professionals up to date with relevant training, information, skills and knowledge to remain competent throughout their career journey. CPD training should never be undervalued. CPD enables learning to become conscious and proactive, rather than simply reactive to situation. CPD purposely creates positive change and enhances an individual through a methodical and structured approach to learning. Membership Application Process All applications are reviewed by a Director of CPD to ensure suitability. No fees will be required from unsuccessful applications. Once approved, the Members team contact you to welcome you and provide the necessary materials to get started with the accreditation process. At this stage you can submit your materials to the CPD Assessments team to start the review process. During the assessment process the Assessments team will liaise with you to ensure your activities are suitable for effective CPD use. Once the materials are approved for CPD you will receive confirmation and approval to apply the CPD Certified symbol to accredited materials. CPD Materials Assessments Training activities, conferences and events are assessed against criteria outlined in a structured and standardised checklist. The process takes an objective view of the further learning structure and value, and ensures the content conforms to CPD principles. Assessments take up to 14 working days to complete, dependent upon the level of detail within the materials. Once the materials have been approved, the resources can then carry the trademarked CPD Certified symbol.

CPD Learning Types Whilst CPD is increasingly more mandatory in career development, types of CPD learning can vary significantly depending on business and individual requirements. There are three main types of CPD; Structured, Reflective and Self-Directed learning. Structured CPD consists of interactive and participation-based study. It is typically proactive and can include attending an applicable training course, conference, workshop, seminar, lecture, e-learning course or CPD certified event. CPD active learning is also appropriate when professionals take career orientated exams and assessments, however the study and revision would be considered self-directed learning. Retention of Knowledge The Learning Pyramid researched by National Training Laboratories of Bethal, Maine illustrates knowledge retention percentages associated with different training methodologies. The first four levels are considered passive learning methods as the lower levels are considered more active and structured learning methodologies. The Learning Pyramid clearly indicates that active participate in learning results in higher retention of learning. The difference in retention levels by training methodology is argued to be due to the time spent reflecting and analysing engages deeper level cognitive processing and thus creating more long-term memorable learning. Background of CPD The professionalisation of industries in response to changes in legislation, consumer needs and general socio-economic trends over the past few decades has resulted in the growth of professional bodies and associations representing these industries and job functions. There are over 1000 institutes & professional bodies across the UK. This number is forecast to increase and accompanied by such growth is the acceptance that academic qualifications must offer more vocational and skills-based or practical learning. As a result, a wider variety of qualifications and training are now available than compared to a decade ago. CPD Further Explained In the past decade the Leitch report (2006) and McCleod report (2009) have fuelled requirements for people to undertake CPD. Both identified skills gaps and shortages across the UK as a whole, and have further highlighted the need for individuals to continually up skill or re-skill regardless of occupation, age or educational level. The reports underline the enhancement of skills and knowledge through Continuous Professional Development as critically important in retaining a competitive edge when operating in global markets.

Examples of Professional Bodies and Associations requiring CPD The CPD Certification Service supports CPD policies of professional bodies, associations and academic institutions. This example list is not exhaustive and continues to grow as more institutes require CPD from their members.
