1 Harwell News Happy to learn Monday 25th April 2016 Year 1 had great learning experience last week and got a taste of the past when they turned their room into a Victorian classroom. Not only did Mrs Chapman suddenly become stern (very unlike her) but also started brandishing a cane quite terrifying! The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves practicing their handwriting using quills and ink, and also using their tablets (the slate rather than the electronic kind) with chalk. They enjoyed themselves so much that I hear that they are building a time machine to travel back into the past

Over the year we have focused on developing the school playground area. Initially, we concentrated on the foundation stage playground and now that it is complete, we have moved onto the rest of the playground. The success of that playground was that it was founded on the ideas of the children. In the meeting, the councillors identified ways which they would like to develop the playground spaces, some of their ideas were: Creating a quiet/sensory garden where the current KS1 play area is. Creating a new KS1 area where the tyre swing is Regenerating the KS2 play area with new equipment Brightening up the playground with new playground marking to help make playtime as active and fun as possible. The ideas and plans are currently back with their classes to be discussed. The council and I will reconvene soon to discuss the next steps.

5 Dear Parents, Over the last week there have been quite a lot of activity up at school. While the Go Green Day was rather soggy event we managed to get a steady flow of jobs completed. It had been a peculiar start to the day. After steady rain and even a flurry of snow we made the decision to postpone the day. Typically, just as the facebook postponement was posted the rain began to relent. When a group of parents turned up, we decided to do what the weather would allow. Weather dependent jobs had to wait, such as fence painting, but we achieved quite a bit with areas tidied both inside and out. Despite the gloomy weather, there was a lovely atmosphere with everyone pulling together with a common purpose. Thank you to all of those parents and children who came along on the day. We will rearrange a further Go Green day for later in the year to try and work on the areas we were unable to. It was a similar story for laying the foundations and building of Koreen s pavilion. While the weather was foul, a tremendous effort was given. I would like to thank in particular Ben Caudle, Matt Orme and Paul Parlett for all of their hard work. It is a timely completion as on Wednesday27 th April we will be hosting the second Koreen Davis Cup. This year 5 schools have been invited plus coaches from Oxford Utd Womens FC, local football clubs, Berks and Bucks & Oxfordshire School s FA. It promises to be quite a festival of girl s football. The start is at 2:45 on Wednesday and should last for a couple of hours. The HSA are kindly serving refreshments, please do come along and enjoy fingers crossed for the weather. Have a lovely week. While we always promote the Good Learner values of not giving up when faced with a challenge, this week we have another opportunity to look at what that means in practice. In this Olympic year, it is a timely reminder that success of all variety usually goes hand in hand with hard work and perseverance. Many thanks to Charlie who was willing to share his achievements on the high rings that perseverance has brought.
