1 IP Office - Job Aid Using DameWare with IP Office Summary Though many IP Office aplications can be run across a RAS connection to the IP Office there are limitations. Principally Manager cannot be used to perform software upgrades of the IP Office. DameWare is a remote control tool that allows Manager (and other programs) to be run on a PC local to the IP Office but controlled from a remote PC using RAS and dial-up networking. 047 Issue 1 (07th January 2003)

2 Introduction Using DameWare with IP Office Introduction DameWare Mini Remote Control (DMRC) is a software utility that allows a user to gain control of a remote PC. It does this using TCP across a LAN or dial-up networking connection. The steps in this process are: 0. Create a RAS Service on the IP Office: See the IP Office Job Aid - Remote Access. 1. Setup a Dial-Up Networking Connection: Uses the RAS Service to access the IP Office LAN. The dialing PC is then part of that LAN and can run IP Office applications. 2. Install DMRC on the Dial-Up PC: Installs the DMRC onto the PC running the RAS dial-up networking connection. 3. Install the DMRC Client Service: Install the DMRC Client service onto the Manager PC local to the IP Office. For Windows NT/2000/XP Professional this can be done remotely across the RAS connection. Otherwise it must be done locally. 4. Connect DMRC to the Client PC: Use DMRC over the RAS connection to take control of a Manager PC local to the IP Office. 5. 3 1. Setup a Dial-Up Networking Connection 1. Setup a Dial-Up Networking Connection DMRC works via TCP across LAN or dial-up networking connections. Refer to IP Office Remote Access Job Aid for a detailed description on how to set up a Remote Access Service (RAS) to the IP Office network. This section describes the local computer steps required to establish a dialup connection to the RAS and IP Office network. 1a. Creating a Dial-Up Networking Connection The process shown is for a Windows 2000 PC. The process for other versions of Windows may vary, however the key requirements will remain the same. 1. We assume that modem or ISDN setup and testing has been completed as per the manufacturers instructions. 2. From the Start menu select Settings, Networking and Dial-up. 3. Select Make New Connection. This starts the Network Connection Wizard. Click on Next>. 4. Select Dial-up to private network and click on Next>. 5. The next screen prompts you to select the device modem or ISDN device that should be used to make the connection. Make your selection and click on Next>. 6. Enter the phone number for the RAS service into the IP Office and click on Next>. 7. Enter a name for this dial-up connection. Using DameWare with IP Office Page 3

4 1. Setup a Dial-Up Networking Connection 1b. Running the Dial-Up Networking Connection The new dial-up connection is listed in Dial-up and Network Connections. 1. Double-click on the connection or right-click on it and select Connect. 2. Enter the User Name and Password. These should match those configured for the RAS connection on the IP Office. 3. Click on the Properties button and select the Networking tab. 4. Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on Properties. 5. Make sure the Obtain IP Address Automatically is selected. Click OK 6. Click on Dial in the connection window to connect to remote LAN. 7. To verify a connection ping a host on the remote LAN. Using DameWare with IP Office Page 4

5 2. Install DMRC on the Dial-Up PC 2. Install DMRC on the Dial-Up PC It is recommended that DMRC is installed on a Windows NT or 2000 Professional PC. After starting installation you may be requested to allow a restart of Windows. Following the restart DRMC installation will automatically resume. 6 3. Install the DMRC Client Service 3. Install the DMRC Client Service In order to take control of a client PC, the DRMC client service must be installed onto that PC. The method for doing this depends on the version of Windows being run on the client PC. Windows NT/2000/XP Professional: If both PC's are both running any of the above, then installation of the DMRC Client service can be done remotely across the LAN or RAS connection. Windows 95/98/ME/XP Home: If either PC is running any of the above, then installation of the DMRC Client service must be done manually at the client PC. DMRC includes a wizard to create an installation package (approximately 350KB) that can be put onto disk or ed. 3a. Remote Service Installation (and Removal) Both PC's must be running Windows NT, 2000 or XP professional in order to install the client service remotely. 1. Start the RAS connection to the IP Office network. 2. Start DMRC (select Start Programs DameWare Mini Remote Control DameWare Mini Remote Control). 3. The Remote Connect list will be displayed. Select Close. 4. Select File Install New Service. 5. Enter the IP address of the target PC and click OK. While the service is being installed, the following progress window will be displayed. A similarly process but using File Remove Service can be used to remove the client service from the remote PC. Using DameWare with IP Office Page 6

7 3. Install the DMRC Client Service 3b. Manual Service Installation (and Removal) DMRC includes a wizard to create a pair of executable files. One is then used to install the DMRC Client service on the client PC, the other to remote the DMRC Client service. Running the Wizard 1. From the Start menu select Program Dameware Mini Remote Control DameWare Service Install & Remove Wizard. 2. This wizard will guide you through creating the installation and removal executables that need to be run on the client PC. 3. Click Next> until the Settings window is displayed. 4. In the settings window, click on the Settings. 5. Tick the Allow Proprietary Challenge/Response option. This is required for Windows 9x based remote client machines. 6. Enter a user ID and password for the DMRC login. 7. Click on OK. 8. Click on Build. The wizard will create DWRCSInstall.exe and DWRCSRemove.exe files in DMRC program folder. Manually Installing the DMRC Client 1. Transfer the two files created by the wizard, DWRCSInsstall.exe and DWRCSRemove.exe, to the client PC. 2. At the client PC, click on the DWRCSInstall.exe file to install the service. 3. Once the service is installed, a DameWare icon should appear in the Windows System Tray (the lower right-hand corner of the task bar). 4. Reboot the computer to check that the DMRC client runs after a reboot. To uninstall the service, execute the DWRCSRemove.exe file. Using DameWare with IP Office Page 7

8 4. Connect DMRC to a Remote Computer 4. Connect DMRC to a Remote Computer 1. Run the dial-up connection to the IP Office. 2. Start DMRC (select Start Programs DameWare Mini Remote Control DameWare Mini Remote Control). 3. The Remote Connect screen should appear, otherwise click on or select File Connect. 4. If you have previously connected to a remote host, select it from the list and then click on Connect. Otherwise click on New Host. 5. Enter the IP address of the remote PC and click on OK. 6. If connecting to a Windows NT/2000/XP Professional client PC: For the Authentication Type select Windows NT Challenge/Response. Enter the User Name, Password and if necessary Domain. 7. If connecting to any other Windows 9x/ME/XP Home client PC: For the Authentication Type select Proprietary Challenge/Response. Enter the User Name and Password that match those used in the client service installation package. 8. Click on Save to remember the setting for future usage. 9. Click on Connect. 10. 9 5. Transferring Files 5. Transferring Files DMRC supports a method of file transfer between the local and remote PC's that it calls Simple File Transfer (SFT). Each PC, remote and local, has an SFT folder. Files dragged from the local desktop into the DMRC window will appear in the remote PC's SFT folder. Similarly files dragged from the DMRC window will appear in the local PC's SFT folder. To open these folders directly, click on for the local folder and for the remote folder. To set the location of the local and remote SFT folders: Local PC SFT Folder: 1. Click on or select View Properties. 2. Select the Global Options tab. 3. Edit the Download Folder path as required. 4. Click on OK. Remote PC SFT Folder: 1. Connect DMRC to the remote PC. 2. Click on or select View Server Settings. 3. Edit the Upload Folder path as required. 4. Click on OK. 5. Note: This can also be done at the remote PC by right-clicking on the icon in the Windows system tray. 6. Manage IP Office via DMRC When using DMRC to control a copy of IP Office Manager running on a PC local to the IP Office, the following factors must be considered: Ensure that local phone and PC users are aware of any reboots before they occur. Where possible use the merge, reboot when free methods to minimize disruption. The RAS dial-up networking connection (and thus DMRC control) will be lost whenever the IP Office is rebooted. Ensure that the IP Office upgrade process has been sucessfully run from the local Manager PC before attempting any future upgrades using DameWare control of the local Manager PC.
