4 Parent Portal for PowerSchool Franklin County Schools will open the Parent Portal for PowerSchool on Monday, Sept 21 st. To obtain access, the legal guardian of a student must come to BHS and show a picture ID to receive password access information. Password information will be distributed from Sept. 21 through Oct. 12. The Parent Portal will allow you to track your student s grades, attendance, and registration information.

5 9 Week Marking Period All high schools in Franklin County are on a 9 week marking period. 6 Graduation Requirements Future Core Ready English 5 credits (Includes Composition requirement for FCS, Eng I, II, III, IV) Mathematics 4 credits Math 1, Math 2, Math 3, & 4 th math will based upon student s post-secondary plans. Social Studies -4 credits World History, Civics, American History I, American History II or AP US History Science -3 credits Earth Sci, Biology, Phy. Sci. or Chemistry Health/Physical Education 1 credit Elective Credits -11 electives 2 credits from CTE, Arts or World Languages 4 credit Concentration (recommended e.g. CTE, Arts, JROTC, or other subject area) Franklin County requires students to complete 28 credits for graduation. Requirements to Attend 4-yr Public University in NC English 5 credits (includes composition for FCS) Math 4 credits must include Math I, Math II, Math III, & 1 upper-level math that requires Alg II as a prerequisite such as AFM, Essentials of College Algebra, Statistics, Pre-Calculus, AP Statistics, or AP Calculus Science 3 credits Social Studies 4 credits Health/PE 1 credit Foreign Language 2 credits Electives -9 credits (would include AP courses and advanced academic courses, CTE courses, and courses in the Arts. Minimum GPA: 2.5 Minimum SAT: 800 Minimum ACT: 17 Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.

7 NC Scholar Requirements Meet all high school requirements needed to attend a 4 yr public university in NC. Complete either Chemistry or Physics 4 elective credits constituting a concentration recommended from one of the following: Career and Technical Education (CTE), JROTC, Arts Education, Second Languages, any other subject area. 3 credits for higher level courses taken during junior and/or senior years which carry 5 or 6 quality points such as: AP, Honors courses, State approved college equivalent courses, Advanced CTE/CTE credentialing courses, Online Honors/State approved college courses. OR 2 credits for higher level courses taken during junior and/or senior years which carry 5 or 6 quality points such as: AP, Honors courses, State approved college equivalent course, Advanced CTE/CTE credentialing courses, Honors/State approved on-line courses and Completion of The North Carolina Graduation Project Minimum Unweighted GPA: 3.5 (Unweighted GPA does not include extra points for honors or AP classes.)

8 Beta Club Beta Club is a national organization that recognizes and promotes high academic achievement, rewards and nurtures worthy character, fosters leadership skills and encourages service to others. Requirements: 3.75 Weighted GPA Completed 3 semesters of high school Faculty approval Good character Invitations sent out to eligible sophomores and juniors in March.

9 PSAT & PLAN PSAT prepares students to take the SAT. Students who perform well on this test should take it again in their junior year on Oct 15 th to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship. The perfect score is a 240. Test Date: Oct. 14 th. Free to 10 th grade. Sign ups were done through Composition classes (Test Optional). The cost for 9 th and 11th graders is $15. Fee was due Sept. 11th. PLAN is a mini ACT and the perfect score is a 32 in each section. All 10 th Graders will take the PLAN. Tentative Date: Oct 6th School counselors will review test scores with students 2 nd semester during course registration.

10 College Entrance Exams (SAT and ACT-Need to Register Online) Usually not necessary for Community Colleges Students usually begin taking these test in the spring of their junior year. Recommendation: Take Math III prior to testing. NC gives ACT to all juniors in March. At least choose 1 test and take it twice. Students who receive free/reduce lunch qualify for SAT/ACT waivers to help pay for testing. (2 per test, and up to 8 college application fee waivers) Scores are not posted on the student s transcript. Students must request score reports to be sent to colleges through or

12 ACT Components: English, Reading, Math, Science, optional Essay 3 hours and 58 minutes with the Essay or 3 hours without it. Cost: $56.50 (with Essay) & $39.50 (without Essay)

13 Career & College Promise Program Career & College Promise helps eligible high school students to begin earning college credit at a community college campus at no cost to them or their families. Beginning in their junior year, students have 2 pathways that allow them the opportunity to earn: College credit completely transferrable to all UNC System Institutions and many of North Carolina's Independent Colleges and Universities. A credential, certificate or diploma in a technical career. Interested students should see their school counselor for program requirements. For more information go to

14 Reminders Schedule: BHS is on a 4X4 block schedule. Attendance: Students must be present 80 out 90 days in a semester to receive course credit. Must have a medical/legal documentation to excuse absences after the 10 th day missed. Extracurricular Activities: Volunteer, join a club/sport, secure a part-time job. Final exams count 25% of the student s course grade. Exams are administered in Jan and Jun. Discipline: Some colleges do request school discipline records.

17 College Foundation on NC All students created a CFNC account in their 9 th grade year. If a student does not remember their password, please have see or their school counselor. Transfer students who do not have an account should also see their school counselor. Students can use their CFNC accounts to do the following: 1. Research colleges in NC 2. Apply to colleges in NC 3. Submit high school transcripts to NC colleges 4. Take a career test inventory 5. Research careers 6. Research scholarships 7. Learn about financial aid 8. Learn how to do write a resume and a cover letter 9. Learn interview techniques 10. Learn about the transfer planner for students going to community college to a 4 yr. college. 11. Take the Financial Literacy Course
