ACHIEVING THE DREAM Hyla Winters, AVP James McCoy, AVP May 7, 2015
National Push to Increase College Completion Rates In just 5 years, more than 60% of all new jobs will require a college education. Currently, more than 70% of our young people start their higher education within two years of graduating high school. Approximately 38% of young adults aged in the U.S. have earned an associate s degree or higher.
National Push to Increase College Completion Rates Once 1 st in the world, America now ranks 10 th in the percentage of young adults with a college degree. For the first time, our current generation of American s will be less educated than their parent s generation. In the current recession, unemployment rates are twice as high for those with just a high school diploma (10.8%) compared to those with a bachelor s degree or higher (4.9%).
Access vs. Completion Between 1970 and 2009, undergraduate enrollment in the United States more than doubled, while the completion rate has been virtually unchanged. We have made progress in giving students from all backgrounds access to college but we haven t finished the all important job of helping them achieve a degree.
President Obama s Challenge Produce 8 million more college graduates by Community Colleges are faced with the goal to increase the number of associate degrees and certificates by 5 million. The national goal is by 2020, 6 out of 10 young adults will have a college degree or credential of value.
NSHE Adopts Complete College America Goals Currently in Nevada, the percentage of adults with a college degree is 30.1% and of adults is 28.2%. Nevada has a large role to play in the national efforts to increase college graduation rates. Complete College America recommends an annual increase of 1,064 additional completers of certificates, associate s degrees and bachelor s degrees to help Nevada reach its goal.
Perspective: Nevada College Completers In 2010, NSHE graduated 10,027 students. In the year 2020, the goal for NSHE is to graduate 18,911 students. In , CSN graduated 2,330 students. In , CSN graduated 2,489 students. In , CSN graduated 4,029 students. By 2020, CSN will need to be graduating nearly 3,800 students per year.
How is CSN going to Meet Our Completion Goals? Many conversations are underway Everyone has a part to play The Achieving the Dream Model is one of our strategies
What is Achieving the Dream? The nation s most comprehensive, non-governmental, non-profit reform network for student success in higher education. Dedicated to the educational success of every learner, leading to improved skills, better employability, and economic growth for communities in Nevada and our nation as a whole.
What is Achieving the Dream? A national network of organizations dedicated to helping community college students stay in school and earn a college certificate or degree. Achieving the Dream is closing achievement gaps and accelerating student success nationwide by: Guiding evidence-based institutional improvement Influencing public policy Generating knowledge Engaging the public
Who is Achieving the Dream? Currently, the Achieving the Dream National Reform Network includes: 200+ colleges across the USA 15+ state policy teams/partners 100+ coaches and advisers 20+ investors
ATD Partners Include American Association of Community Colleges Jobs for the Future MDC Manpower Demonstration Resource Corp.(MDRC) Community College Research Center Community College Leadership Program Public Agenda
Grant Opportunities from ATD Investors Include Lumina Foundation The Bank of America Charitable Foundation The Heinz Endowments W.K. Kellogg Foundation Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation Kresge Foundation Nellie Mae Education Foundation Walmart Foundation
The ATD Philosophy A sustained, disciplined, data-driven and informed focus on improving student success ultimately effects: National Competitiveness (5-15%) Regional Economic Development (3:1) Increased Earnings (20-30%) Increased Employment (60%) (
With ATD.. CSN has committed to do whatever is necessary to improve the success of our students
Why Achieving the Dream? Less than half of all students who enter the community college with the goal of earning a certificate or degree have met their goal six years later. These statistics are even worse for low-income and minority students.
How? Collect quantitative data on learner performance by race/ethnicity, economic status, gender. Use qualitative data in the form of Focus Group Sessions with target populations to identify barriers to learner success. Use the data to develop strategies, interventions, or reforms to implement in an attempt to address the achievement gaps.
How? Assess the data to evaluate the effectiveness of implemented strategies/interventions on learner success. Distribute data to help faculty and staff understand the achievement gaps to learner success.
Our Efforts To Date 2 Data Themes Emerged Student Persistence Increasing semester-to-semester & year-to-year persistence Course Completion Increasing completion in high enrollment/low success courses
PERSISTENCE INTERVENTION Mandatory Steps After Admissions 1. CSN Orientation 2. English, Math and Reading Assessments 3. Academic Advising
PERSISTENCE INTERVENTION ASSESSMENT Preliminary assessment of the data associated with this intervention reveals an increase in first term to second term persistence for students who went through the mandatory steps prior to enrollment.
COURSE COMPLETION INTERVENTION ONLINE & ON DEMAND STUDENT SUCCESS WORKSHOPS 1. EMBEDDED ACCESS IN STUDENT S MYCSN PORTAL 2. DESIGNED TO BE BUILT INTO COURSE CURRICULUM 3. OVER 40 WORKSHOPS TO INCLUDE TOPICS LIKE: TIME MANAGEMENT, STUDY SKILLS & FINANCIAL LITERACY
COURSE COMPLETION INTERVENTION ASSESSMENT Preliminary assessment of the data associated with this intervention reveals an increase in course completion for students who successfully completed multiple student success workshops.
Next Steps Finalize Assessment of Two ATD Interventions Share Assessment Data Widely Plan for Intervention Scale Up Apply for ATD Leader College Status Identify and Apply for Grants for ATD Leader Colleges
