1 Advising Workshop Wednesday, March 26, 2014 Agenda: The new 2014 Core Curriculum General Requirements for all Bachelor s Degrees and B.A./B.S. degree requirements Learning Community Courses - Fall 2014 Early Advising and Orientation sessions 1

2 New 2014 Core Curriculum Approved by THECB Changes can be made only once a year The core approved is in effect for Fall 2014 through Summer Changes to the core must be submitted to THECB by March 2015, to take effect Fall

3 Core Codes & Courses Note: ENGL 1113 is not in the new core New freshmen for Fall 2014, should enroll in ENGL 1123 (honors students can enroll in ENGL/SPCH 1103) 3

5 Core Codes & Courses Notice A&P now has a 3 hour version as well as the 4 hour version. Different programs may require one or the other, be sure student knows the difference and which they need. 5

11 New 2014 Core (continued) The core must be 42 hours, no more, no less. Therefore, majors that require students to complete the 4-hour math, science, or language courses must account for the extra hours within their major or other requirements toward the 120 hours required for graduation. 11

12 New 2014 Core (continued) Courses duplicated in different areas of the core: SOCL 1133 is currently listed in 080N (Social & Behavioral Sciences) and also in 090B (Undergraduate Inquiry & Creativity). For the academic year, it mostly likely will be taught only for the 080N core area, and then in Fall 2015 they are proposing a change to the new core for a new course number that will be in the 090B area instead of MUSC 2733 is listed in 050N (Creative Arts) and also in 090A (Cultural & Global Understanding). This course will always default to the 050N core area, but if a student needs to use it in the 090A area, he/she can petition to do so with the advisor and have it specifically marked on the degree plan. 12

14 New 2014 Core (continued) Who will stay in the Current Core? Students who will continue with program requirements and graduate under the catalog (or prior catalog that is not expired). Students must have earned at least 12 hours during the time period of a catalog to use it for graduation. Who will be under the New Core? New and Transfer students beginning Fall New and Transfer students beginning Summer 2014 (who do not earn at least 12 hours during Summer 2014). Any re-enrolling student who chooses (or must) move to the new catalog. 14

15 New 2014 Core (continued) Rule 4.28 (C) Any student who first enrolled in an institution of higher education prior to Fall 2014 shall, after consultation with an academic advisor, have the choice to: (i) complete the core curriculum requirements in effect in Summer 2014; or (ii) transition to the current core curriculum requirements, in which case, previously completed core curriculum courses shall be applied to the current core curriculum requirements under the same terms as those that apply to a student who transfers from one institution to another. The student shall then complete the remaining requirements under the current core curriculum. NOTE: This is for continuing/re-enrolling students who have core courses prior to Fall 2014, if the student changes to the new core, the previous core classes will count in the new core. It does not mean that students can continue to swap classes back and forth. Courses taken Fall 2014 and thereafter will only have the core codes attached as they were taken. Example: Current student took MATH 1433 (Trigonometry) in Spring Student decides in Fall 2014 to change to the new core. Even though MATH 1433 is not in the new core, we will allow this course to fulfill the math in the new core. 15

Demonstrate computer literacy by earning credit for a proficiency test or in CMPS 1013, 1023, 1033, 1044, EDUC 1023, or MIS Changing to: 13.
