3 Getting Started Guide Ten Fast Facts The Pearson System of Courses is designed to make the work of teachers more effective and engaging The Pearson System of Courses is a system. The system is based on the digital delivery of courses that are designed to support student learning, motivation and engagement, classroom management, assessment, and teacher professional development. The system is based on years of research about how people learn. The methodology that underlies the Pearson System of Courses classroom instructional rituals and routines is designed to support a variety of learning styles and has been proven to improve student outcomes. The Pearson System of Courses curriculum, from kindergarten through high school, has been written from the ground up. It reflects the most current international research on the learning and teaching of mathematics, reading, and writing. The system uses state-of-the-art digital tools and media to facilitate mathematics and English language arts instruction. The unit and lesson design enhances the form of instruction, providing teachers with supports for presenting new content and concepts to the whole class and fostering teacher-student and student-student collaboration. The system supports individualized and collaborative student learning. The Pearson System of Courses includes adaptive learning technology tools that are optimized to engage and support student interaction with the content, both individually and in small groups. 1

4 Pearson System of Courses The system contains content that is relevant, up to date, and easy to personalize. The lessons within the Pearson System of Courses can be easily updated and localized so that lessons remain interesting and engaging. Teacher supports are embedded into the design of each lesson and unit, as well as in stand-alone professional development modules and teacher networks. The system helps to enhance teacher capacity with research-based classroom instructional routines and specific guidance on the delivery of the content. The system uses technology to help teachers identify students who need extra help or tutoring, and the unit design incorporates time to support individualized instruction. In addition, the system organizes the assessment data and provides teachers with professional development support needed to help individual learners. The system includes formative assessment throughout instruction, enabling teachers to identify student strengths and weaknesses and modify instruction accordingly. These assessments occur throughout the unit and lesson delivery as pretests, quizzes, exercises, lesson tasks, and self-checks all as part of daily instruction and authentic student work. The system provides real-time, meaningful feedback to support teaching and learning. There are built-in tools, animations, and simulations to engage and deepen learning for students who demonstrate proficiency, as well as explicit scaffolds for students needing more support. 2

Independent Readings are collections of complete books and book excerpts both classic and contemporary that have been recommended by educators and curated by grade level. Claims & Quests provides provocative statements or theses for students to prove or disprove as well as the option to create something original of their own. Beyond the Classroom is an optional section that connects students to an array of curated educational resources, productivity tools, games, and other apps via the web. 17

20 Pearson System of Courses Exploring Concept Corner With each mathematics lesson, tap to access Concept Corner. Here, as you can see on the Overview page, students can delve into rich supplemental resources designed to complement and expand understanding of the mathematical concepts addressed in the Common Core State Standards. Tap to return to the Concept Corner home page. Tap to display concept maps. Video Tutorials support the specific concepts addressed within the lessons. Example Problems, ranging from easy to difficult, enable students to practice their conceptual learning and to understand and explain alternative ways of solving the problems. Concept Map is a navigational tool that illustrates how mathematical concepts and their interrelationships are aligned to the Common Core State Standards. Glossary is an easily accessible reference guide of key terms and related terms from the lessons. Inside this Concept provides students with mathematical briefs about important topics in mathematics written by mathematicians. TLounge is where teachers can share best practices and tools, ask questions about everything from managing the classroom to supporting nontraditional learners, and meet up with other members of the mathematics teaching community. 18

21 Getting Started Guide Exploring the K 1 App The environment in grades K and 1 is teacher mediated. A simple, student-friendly design places all student tools, videos, and digital manipulatives for a unit in a library, which can also be distributed for each lesson via the Today screen. 1. From the ipad Home screen, tap. 2. Enter your user name and password, then tap the check mark to log in. 3. Select a lesson from the menu ELA or Mathematics to open a demonstration unit. 4. Home takes you back to the unit s home page Library holds all the music, videos, tools, and interactives that students use throughout a unit. Libraries are organized by unit and serve as both a reference and a resource for accomplishing work. Libraries from prior units are always available from the Home screen. Teacher Guide is where you can find tips regarding lesson planning, teaching nontraditional learners, and more. Notebook is where is where students can create and keep letters, numbers, art, and more. 19
