2 COURSES OFFERED LANGUAGE COURSES: French, Italian and English Objective: learn, reinforce or perfect students French, Italian or English with the intensive and short-term classes offered. TEACHER TRAINING Objective: special classes designed to enhance and update the teaching methods used to teach French as a foreign language. SPECIAL TRAINING Objective: anticipate and meet the language training needs of institutions or organizations. REGISTRATION The minimum age requirement is 18 years of age. LANGUAGE COURSES: FRENCH, ITALIAN AND ENGLISH Objective of these courses are to develop students oral and written skills as well as their cultural knowledge of the language studied. All levels are accepted including beginners. REGISTRATION FEES: (pre-registration 200 ) ; for students registered at the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis (including ERASMUS students), high school students and students at CPGE pre-registered at the UNS; for the students pursuing a double degree French-Italian and for UNS scholarship students. CALENDAR OF FRENCH COURSES 1-1 st session: from the 2 nd to the 29 th of July 1-2 nd session: from the 4 th to the 29 th of August Total number of hours: 78 hours A placement test will be given to determine student s language levels. - The exam will be the 2 nd of July for the 1 st session at 9:00 A.M. - The exam will be the 4 th of August for the 2 nd session at 9:00 A.M. CALENDAR OF ITALIAN AND ENGLISH COURSES - Are offered only during the July session: from 2nd to 29th of July Total number of hours: 78 hours Placement test: - the 2 nd of July: at 9:30 A.M. for the English test and at 10:00 A.M. for the Italian test 1 The 14 th of July and the 15 th of August are national holidays.

3 SCHEDULE - Mornings from Monday to Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.: culture-langue courses - Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday afternoons from 1:30 P.M. to 3:30 P.M.: Workshops. Students will choose two workshops according to their language level. Objectives of the culture-language courses These courses are designed to develop student s oral communication skills in everyday life, within a university setting and within a professional business setting. Objectives of the workshops: To optimize linguistically the aspects of contemporary French culture and language, these courses focus on comprehension and written or oral expression according to the thematic. Examples of workshops proposed according to the language levels: Level 0 : French Culture and Oral language expression. Level A1-A2 : Level B1-B2 : Level C1-C2 : Oral language expression, French Songs, Civilization, Cinema, Media, Written expression. Cinema, Civilization, Theater, Art, Oral language expression, Business French. Illustrate your idea of Europe : think and construct the European Union, Media, Civilization: the great myths of the history of France, Legal French, Spoken French, Literature of the 20 th century, Theater, French University Preparation Courses. Examples of the afternoon workshops offered for the English and Italian courses Cinema, Media, Oral expression, Written expression, Civilization, Literature, English/Italian business courses, Legal English/Italian language courses The Management reserves the right to cancel any workshop if there are an insufficient number of students registered. CERTIFICATE A certificate is issued at the end of each session indicating the student s language level. The levels are in accordance with those defined by the Council of Europe: CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, teaching, assessment) A1: Breakthrough B1: Threshold C1: Effective Operational Proficiency A2: Waystage B2: Vantage C2: Mastery Certain courses may be validated as credits or as ECTS by the student s university (located in their country of origin).

4 TEACHER TRAINING These courses were designated for French as foreign language teachers (undergraduate or graduate students). CALENDAR - Is offered only during the July session from the 3 rd to the 29 th of July. Total number of courses: 78 hours per session SCHEDULE - Mornings from Monday to Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. - Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday afternoons from 1:30 P.M. to 3:30 P.M. REGISTRATION FEE: 675 (pre-registration 200 ) These courses are presented in the form of workshops oriented towards linguistic, cultural and pedagogical formats to teach French as a foreign language. Program Methods for teaching French as a foreign language (18 hours) Objective: contemplate the challenges of contemporary didactic in order to meet the needs and objectives of teaching and learning a foreign language; familiarize the teachers with the CEFR evaluation system. Didactic of grammar (18 hours) Objective: analyze the process and grammatical activities as experienced when teaching or learning French as a foreign language. Evaluation and teaching (18 hours) Objective: become familiar with CEFR system of evaluation, its descriptions and guidelines. Activities to animate the class (12 hours) Objective: learn to stimulate your class and encourage student participation by using creative and playful activities. Theater (12 hours) Objective: train participants through the use of theatre to improve intonation and personal expression and public speaking by using body language as a tool to facilitate communication. CERTIFICATION A certificate will be issued at the end of the session indicating the title of the courses taken and the number of accredited hours. SPECIAL TRAINING Courses offered during the year designed to anticipate and meet the language training needs of institutions or organizations. An estimate is given according to the number of students and the duration of the classes requested. The content of this program includes language courses and can offer socialcultural and sporting activities.

5 SOCIAL-CULTURAL ACTIVITIES Cultural and sporting activities, as well as conferences are proposed to reinforce learning and cultural links and encourage language and cultural exchange between French students and foreign students from around the globe studying French in Nice. These activities are offered at reasonable prices. ENTERTAINMENT The International Summer University of Nice organizes optional day trips and visits to some of the most interesting places surrounding Nice. Here are some examples of excursions: Cruise to Saint Tropez Visit of the museums in Nice (Matisse Museum, Chagall Museum, Asian Art Museum, etc.) Trail hiking in Mercantour National Park Day trip to Monaco Excursion to Porquerolles Island Trip to the Gorges of Verdon (canoe-kayak or rafting) Visit to the city of Grasse, known as world s perfume capital And also... Picnics and beach volley games Water sports (parachute, scooters, water skiing, Fly Fishing, etc.)

(Studio is not furnished with cooking materials.) The rate per session (housing only): 590 euros - 1 st session: Arrival: July 1 st Departure: July 29 th - 2 nd session: Arrival: August 3 rd - Departure: August 29 th Access to housing is possible from 8:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. and from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. 2) Housing at the University residence hall Résidence Universitaire du CROUS Situated near the Institut Universitaire des Langues (Carlone Campus) Individual rooms with a sink (sheets), community showers and bathrooms on each floor (cleaned twice a day). 7 MEALS Meals will be served weekdays from Monday to Friday at the University Cafeteria situated on the Carlone Campus. - Breakfast: comprised of a hot drink, fruit juice, cereals, fruit, yoghurt and Viennese pastries. - Lunch: comprised of a mixed salad + main course + dessert. Rates - Breakfast plan: 59 - Lunch plan: Complete plan (breakfast and lunch): 187 PS: The CROUS, Ségurane and Sud Etudes Accueil are private institutions that offer special rates to the university; hence, the UIEN is not liable for the services they offer.

8 REGISTRATION PROCESS For students not registered at the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis (UNS): The candidate will fill out a registration form and choose from the following options (classes, housing and meal plans). Please mail the registration form to the UIEN by the 30 th of May for the July session and by the 2 nd of June for the August session (post dated envelopes will be accepted). Please include the required documents and the international check or money order or wire transfer confirmation statement for the 200 euro deposit. (F.YI.: please note that the 200 euros are non-refundable and be sure to include a copy of your health insurance policy and most recent diploma). Upon receipt of the registration form and required documents the UIEN will send a pre-registration certificate which will indicate the options chosen and will mail it and a copy of the balance statement to the candidate. Please sign and return the balance statement form with the balance payment by the 26 th of May for the July session and by the 23 rd of June for the August session (post dated envelopes will be accepted). Your registration will be validated upon receipt of the balance payment and the signed balance statement form. For students registered or pre-registered at the University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis: Student s registered or pre-registered at the UNS may benefit from a preferential rate if they meet the criteria and can prove their student status at the UNS. The candidate will fill out the application form and include courses, housing and meal plan options. Please mail the application form to the UIEN by the 30 th of May 2008 for the July session and by the 2 nd of June 2008 for the August session (post dated envelopes will be accepted). Please include the required documents and the international check or money order or wire transfer statement for the full amount of the classes. (F.Y.I.: the reduced rate will not be reimbursed for any reason, be sure to include a copy of your health insurance policy and most recent diploma.) Upon receipt of the application form the UIEN will send a registration certificate indicating the options chosen and will mail it to the candidate.

9 RATES Courses: Housing: 675 per session 280 for University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis students: - Registered students: must submit a copy of their student card; - Pre-registered students: must submit a copy of their preregistration certificate; - ERASMUS students: must submit a copy of their study abroad contract. 100 for students pursuing a double diploma in France and Italy and for UNS scholarship students (must submit a copy of their scholarship award letter). 395 per month for a single occupancy room at the university residence hall (CROUS) 590 per month for a single occupancy room at Résidence Ségurane Meals (CROUS University cafeteria from Monday to Friday): 59 for the breakfast plan 128 for the lunch plan 187 for the complete meal plan (breakfast and lunch) Packaged deal (university residence hall + meals): 565 for a single occupancy room at the university residence hall CROUS + complete meal plan (breakfast + lunch at the university cafeteria CROUS).
