1 Singapore Word Problems Process 1. Read and copy the entire problem. 2. Divide the problem into separate ideas with slash marks. 3. Determine who is involved in the problem. 4. Determine what is involved with the problem. 5. Draw two unit bars of equal length. 6. Label what you know. 7. Put a question mark in for what you need to find out. 8. Work the problem underneath the bars and label all remaining parts of the bars. 9. Answer the question in a complete sentence. 10. Calculate a second piece of information and write it in a complete sentence. Example Bob had 3/5 as much money as Joe./ Joe had $25./ How much money did Bob have? Who: Bob, Joe What: money Joe s money $25 Bob s money 5 5 5? X Bob had $15. Altogether Bob and Joe had $40.

If the father was 46 years old two years ago, how old is the son now? 12. There are three times as many cats as rabbits in a pet store. If there are 24 more cats than rabbits, how many cats are there in all? 13. 3/5 of a group of children are boys. If there are 20 more boys than girls, how many girls are there? 14. 2/5 of a number is 12. What is 7/10 of that number?
