12 Water related research in FP7 Water research has accounted for growing numbers of projects and budget in the European Commission s RTD Framework Programmes (FPs) since the 1980s because: Water is a major environmental/societal issue Water is a key element of many EU policies Water has high strategic and economic importance Water related research in FP7 = approx. 900 projects with approx. 130 million of per year from various thematic areas of the FP7 'Cooperation 'Programme (environment, agriculture and food, NMP, ICT, Space, Security, Energy, Socio-Economic Sciences and Humanities) as well as from the 'Ideas' and 'Capacities' Programmes of FP7.

14 CLIMATE ACTION, ENVIRONMENT, RESOURCE EFFICIENCY AND RAW MATERIALS - Focus area "Water innovation: Boosting its value for Europe" Rationale: Reinforce water innovation capacity and market uptake of successful research results Boost the competitiveness and growth of the European water sector Create leadership in water resources management and position Europe as a global market leader in water related innovative solutions Support the needs of relevant EU water, innovation and resource efficient policies, international commitments and related initiatives
15 WATER /2015: Bridging the gap: from innovative water solutions to market replication Scope: Proposals shall address only one of the following: a) [2014] [39 M ] First application and market replication of near-market water solutions, addressing the thematic priorities identified in the EIP on Water: water reuse and recycling water and waste water treatment, including recovery of resources water and energy integration flood and drought risk management the role of ecosystem services in the provision of water related services b) [2015] [45 M ] Demonstration/pilot activities of new or improved innovative water solutions in a real environment, with a focus on the cross cutting priorities identified in the EIP on Water, while addressing the thematic priorities: water governance decision support systems and monitoring financing for innovation Type of action: Innovation actions (2 stage call)
16 WATER /2015: Integrated approaches to water and climate change Scope: Proposals shall address only one of the following issues: a) [2014] [13 M ] Water cycle under future climate: maximise the reliability of projections of precipitation... improve the short-to-medium term forecasting of related extreme events... assess the impacts of weather extremes... develop risk management strategies... b) [2015] [15 M ] Integrated approaches to food security, low-carbon energy, sustainable water management and climate change mitigation: develop tools and methodologies for integrating agriculture, forestry, climate change impacts and adaptation with climate-energy-economic models and land-use models... consider the potential role, contributions and limitations of low-carbon options with respect to land and water resources; develop a better scientific understanding of the land-water-energy-climate nexus; develop integrated strategies and approaches... Type of action: Research and innovation actions (2 stage call)
17 WATER /2015: Stepping up EU research and innovation cooperation in the water area Scope: Proposals should address only one of the following: [2014] [10 M ] [1 project] Proposals should pool the necessary financial resources from the participating national (or regional) research programmes with a view to implementing a joint call for proposals resulting in grants to third parties with EU co-funding to support the priorities identified in the Strategic Research Agenda of the Water Joint Programming Initiative (JPI). Proposers should also consider implementing other joint activities including additional joint calls without EU co-funding. In 2014, this call should support research and innovation developing technological solutions and services to support the implementation of EU water policy, in particular for water distribution and measurement, waste water treatment and reuse, desalination, floods and droughts etc.
18 WATER /2015 (continued) [2015] [15 M ] [1 project] Proposals should pool the necessary financial resources from the participating national (or regional) research programmes with a view to implementing a joint call for proposals with EU co-funding to support the priorities identified in the Strategic Research Agenda of the Water JPI. Proposers should also consider implementing other joint activities including additional joint calls without EU co-funding. In 2015 the call should support research and innovation to support the implementation of EU water policy, in particular on sustainable water use in agriculture, to increase water use efficiency and reduce soil and water pollution. Type of action: ERA-NET Cofund
19 WATER /2015: Harnessing EU water research and innovation results for industry, agriculture, policy makers and citizens a) [2014] [<5 M ] Proposals should aim at only one of the following issues: promote the dissemination and exploitation of EU funded activities... take stock of existing practical and scientific knowledge in the various sectors and identify research gaps... promote water-related innovation and business development, help cluster ecoinnovative companies and develop innovative financial instruments develop a coordinated approach to the integration of the water and waste sectors in the 'Smart Cities and Communities' EIP... b) [2015] [<6 M ] Proposals should aim to: implement measures to showcase, exchange, test and transfer water management solutions to end-users in the agricultural sector... contribute to a 'thematic network' on water in agriculture... support the integration of water relevant issues in the EIP on 'Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability'... Type of action: Coordination and support actions
20 WATER /2015 Strengthening international R&I cooperation in the field of water Scope: Proposals shall address only one of the following issues: a) [2014] [<5 M ] Strategic cooperation partnerships for water research and innovation between Europe and the rest of the world, promoting the creation of networks of companies (including SMEs), entrepreneurs, not for profit organisations, policy makers, regulators and funding bodies to create business and social opportunities.... b) [2015] [<6 M ] [1 project] A coordination platform for scientists, decision makers, practitioners and other key stakeholders representing a number of African countries throughout the duration of Horizon 2020 to identify opportunities and constraints for the sustainable management of water and other natural resources and ecosystems and for the development of costeffective climate change adaptation and mitigation measures in Africa.... Type of action: Coordination and support actions
21 WATER /2015 (continued) c) [2015] [15 M ] Development of water supply and sanitation technology, systems and tools, and/or methodologies to manage risks associated with water supply and sanitation and cross-boundary water management issues, or integrated water resources management systems for sustainable agriculture and food security, sustainable environment protection and economic growth, focused on the non-eu Mediterranean countries and Africa.... Type of action: Research and innovation actions (2 stage call)

24 NMP : Low-energy solutions for drinking water production Low-energy solutions for water softening and especially for water desalination target energy consumption rates around 1 kwh/m3 Approaches that may bring better performance and lower energy use may be based on (but are not limited to) a combination of membrane filtration (reverse osmosis) and applying electric potential, electrochemical membrane processes, membrane distillation, selective ion conducting materials, or crystallisation of clathrates. Projects should develop integrated solutions or combinations of technologies that come closer to the mentioned target. Projects should aim at developing pilot plants demonstrating the low energy consumption as well as the overall competitiveness of the technology... international cooperation is encouraged, in particular with developing countries... proposals should include an outline of the initial exploitation and business plans...
25 SPIRE? SPIRE : Recovery technologies for metals and other minerals New approaches combining several existing techniques (e.g. precipitation, adsorption, extraction, physical or biological treatment and separation) or new alternative solutions could provide a cost-effective way to achieve major improvements in the efficiency of recovery operations for metals and other minerals, leading to waste reduction and minimising the environmental impact of industrial operations. The proposed solutions should also have potential for integration in the current industrial scenario, and should be suitable for different sectors in the process industry. It is essential to consider the compatibility of the technologies with currently existing plants, taking into consideration the capital -intensive nature of some industrial sectors involved. Demonstration activities should focus in the following research areas: Innovative technologies for minerals and metals treatment... Development of new approaches for the design and scale up of industrial processes... The proposed solutions should be easily integrated with the currently existing plants/technologies...
26 Outside Horizon 2020 The LIFE multiannual work programme for has been adopted on 19 March 2014 The first call is provisionally set to launch 16 June See section Water Industry
27 LIFE Water industry 1. Projects aiming at developing technologies for drinking water and urban waste water treatment systems, through the use of resource efficient processes for the provision of water services (e.g. aiming to reduce energy consumption for the treatment and management of water, and water losses) and onsite procedures and control processes to diminish or eliminate discharges of emerging pollutants and pathogens as part of wastewater treatment effluents. 2. Projects implementing tools (e.g. planning, decentralised systems, risk-based approaches) to ensure the efficient provision of water services that are compliant with the Drinking Water Directive and the Urban Waste Water Directive in areas of low population density.
28 LIFE Water industry (continued) 3. Projects aiming at more efficient and effective, innovative solutions and/or treatment options regarding recycled/ reclaimed water, developing and demonstrating: Innovative concepts for (alternative) water supply, wastewater treatment, reuse and recovery of resources; Source control methods and cost-effective on-site technologies for discharges of emerging pollutants and pathogens into the wastewater treatment system; Water treatment innovation hubs, in regions that currently lack of appropriate sewer systems and treatment and sanitation facilities, applying smart technologies and decentralized systems with a focus on alternative water sources. Systematic approaches to avoid loss of water, energy and resources in industrial production and water and wastewater infrastructure.
