1 STUDENT TECHNOLOGY SURVEY RESULTS Survey Conducted November 2010 Overview In November 2010, an on-line survey was conducted for all credit and non-credit students. 1,628 students responded to the survey. The purpose of the survey was to learn about students use of technologies and future uses of technology. Anne Arundel Community College faculty and staff are reviewing these results (and the supporting comments) in conjunction with results from the faculty/staff technology needs survey to identify actions and recommendations. The following is a summary of findings: A great majority of students have their own laptop, computer, handheld or other type of electronic device. 74% of our students own a laptop, 57% own a personal computer, 41% own a handheld device and 14% own an Apple Macintosh. Only 4% of our students do not own a device. In regards to wireless usage on campus, laptops (and netbooks) are used more heavily than handhelds. Laptops (and netbooks) are primarily used to access MyAACC, perform research, and to access and social networking sites. Handhelds are mainly used to access and social networking sites. Students indicated that they utilize their personal equipment for school-related functions. If made available, students replied that they would use their personal equipment to login to the college network to access personal and shared drives, access AACC course applications and print. Regarding wireless access on campus, more than 45% of students are very satisfied or satisfied as to access and availability, as well as speed and performance. A little more than 25% of the students did not have an opinion, less than 9% are dissatisfied or very dissatisfied and the remaining are neutral. The majority of students replied that it was very important or important to have wireless in the classroom. Only 6% of the students replied that it was not important or not at all important to have wireless in the classroom. 53% of the students do not need to come to campus to use technology as they have everything needed off-campus. The remaining students need to come to campus to access some type of technology. 26% need access to run applications and 23% need to print. Others need access to personal/shared drives, peripherals, internet and technical support. Page 1
2 The majority of students need access to computers while on campus and in general, computers are available. 66% of students need access often or all the time, 12% never need access to a computer. 19% of students cannot access a computer often or all the time, 42% never have a problem accessing computers. The great majority of students replied that they needed college-provided access to applications (such as Adobe Photoshop, MS Word and Maple) outside of class. 69% stated that it was very important or important. Only 11% said that it was not important or not at all important. 51% of the students are neutral as to whether there should be more Apple Macintosh computers on campus. 30% of students strongly agree or agree that there should be more; 19% disagree or strongly disagree. When students encounter technical problems they utilize the Help desk, but they also depend on other students or faculty/staff to assist them. Technology assistance is needed after hours for a minority of the students. 3% need it frequently, 36% need it periodically. Overall, students are satisfied with classroom technology and the use of technology in the classroom. Only 5% disagree and 29% are neutral. Students make great use of various collaboration tools. 95% of student use social networking sites (such as Twitter, blogs, Facebook); 92% use video or photo sharing websites (such as YouTube, Flickr, Picasa); and 87% use web-based applications (such as Google Docs, iwork, Microsoft Office Live Workspace). When asked whether they would like to use these tools to communicate with faculty and staff, the response was not positive; they preferred to use MyAACC group tools. Overwhelmingly, students prefer to communicate with faculty and staff using or telephone. 97% of students prefer to use as a tool for communication. 53% like to use telephone. The following section provides data graphs which support the findings. Page 2
