2 Medical Anatomy Course Syllabus Course Number: MEL 5605 Credit Hours: Course Format: Three (3) credit hours This online course is tailored for asynchronous distance learners. Course Description: Medical Anatomy will be taught using a combined regional and systemic approach to examine the relationships and organization of the major structures within the thorax, abdomen, head/neck, and back/limbs regions of the human body. Organization of human anatomy is correlated with diagnostic imaging and pathophysiology. Medical-based scenarios will be used to develop problem solving and critical thinking skills. Prerequisites: This post-graduate course is designed to meet the needs of those BA and BS graduates that want to pursue a medical career. This course will provide an essential foundation for students that wish to pursue a change-in-career to a health profession or have not met the admission requirements of medical school. This advance medical anatomy course will require a strong science foundation of five (5) full-semester science courses related to Biology, Chemistry, and/or Physics. For computer related questions, please contact the Technical Director, TBA. Schedule: The course is offered every semester, including the summer. Course Goals: The goals of the course are three-fold: (1) to provide a foundation of the fundamental concepts and terminology of the anatomy of the human body; (2) to discuss anatomical organization into functional systems related to medical correlations; and (3) to promote critical thinking of the clinical consequences of anatomical injuries, musculoskeletal disorders, pulmonary diseases, gastrointestinal abnormalities, and renal pathophysiology. Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. demonstrate an understanding of the basic anatomical terminology as it relates to its, organization to form the functional systems of the human body; 2. describe the anatomical structures of the human body relative to systems, location, and planes of the body; 3. demonstrate an understanding of the primary functions of the major systems of the human body; 1

3 4. develop problem solving skills to describe possible pathologic outcomes of system dysfunction; 5. demonstrate critical thinking skills to evaluate how alterations in anatomical structures and changes in system function will lead to medical conditions. Learning Resources: 1. Unit overviews, recorded lectures with PowerPoint presentations, and other multimedia resources will be provided on the course web site. 2. Required text: Principles of Human Anatomy, 12 th Edition. Tortora, G.J. and Nielsen, M., John Wiley & Sons, The information in the required text and workbook are coordinated with online lecture materials. 3. Practice on-line quizzes that consist of multiple-choice questions will be available for each module of study. 4. Clinical exercises in anatomical injuries, musculoskeletal disorders, pulmonary diseases, gastrointestinal abnormalities, and renal pathophysiology will be used to promote critical thinking. 5. An on-line chat session will be available every week to address questions related to the lectures and clinical exercises. Examinations and Grading: There will be 4 examinations. Each examination will cover the content of one of 4 modules. Each examination will consist of 100 multiple-choice questions (each valued of 1 point) and will be timed. Each exam will be worth 100 points. Students will have to take all examinations at a secured site, e.g., a testing center that is part of the National College Testing Association. Module One: Introduction to the Human Body (100 points) Organization of the human body Skeletal System Muscular System Joints of the Extremities Functional Anatomy of the Extremities Module Two: Thorax, Cardiovascular System, Respiratory System, and Lymphatics (100 points) Thorax Cardiovascular System Respiratory System Lymphatic System Module Three: Abdomen and Pelvis (100 points) Digestive System Urinary System Male Reproductive System Female Reproductive System Module Four: Organization of the Nervous System (100 points) Nervous System: Central Nervous System Peripheral Nervous System 2

4 Special Senses 4 module examinations = Total points possible 400 points. Your final grade will be the total number of points earned/400 (%). Grading Scale: A % correct out of a possible 400 points A % B % B 83-86% B % C % C 73-76% C % D % D 63-66% E <63% I = An incomplete grade will be given if a student fails to complete the course as scheduled. Grading Policy: There are no make-up examinations unless otherwise granted by the course coordinator prior to an examination date. If personal circumstances prevent the taking of an examination, it is the student responsibility to contact the course coordinator. Failure to take an examination without prior permission will be recorded as a 0. Assignments: The course is divided into 4 modules. Each module consists of selected chapters with specific reading assignments. For each module students will: (1) review the learning objectives and corresponding lecture notes; (2) read and complete the assignments as given; (3) complete interactive exercises associated with each module (e.g., concept mapping and clinical scenarios); (4) take online practice examinations; and (5) take the scheduled, online module examination.
