1 Metro Health DRESS CODE STANDARDS Section HR-Employment Practice Former Policy Number P2.2 Policy Number HR-06 Original Date December 2004 Effective Date April 2013 Next Review January 2016 indicates change Policy Statement Scope Metro Health will have dress standards for all employees to promote professionalism and enhance customer/patient relations. Each employee s personal appearance and cleanliness is important, as it reflects the attitude of the hospital and its commitment to quality health care with respect to patient care, employee identification, safety and security. Metro Health, clinical and non-clinical, residents and interns, contracted staff and students. General. 1. Department Managers/Supervisors are responsible for enforcing appropriate dress and appearance of their personnel, in accordance with this policy. 2. In departments where uniforms are provided, employees are informed and responsible for uniform loss or mistreatment. 3. While on duty all employees are required to wear a picture identification badge that indicates employee s full name, credentials as appropriate and department worked in. The identification badge is to be worn above the waist with picture, name, etc., visible. 4. Personal cleanliness and appearance shall be the responsibility of the individual. There are areas where protective clothing, devices or equipment must be worn. These areas shall be marked as such and must be observed by all employees. 5. Friday casual days are acceptable as long as the casual attire fits within the guidelines of this policy. The focus of this policy is on the customer/patient and how our image impacts their perception of professional practice and quality health care. 6. Departments will maintain a list of approved department-specific uniform colors. These colors are exclusive to specific positions and may not be worn by other areas (e.g., Royal Blue and White are exclusive to RNs and LPNs). This list is reflected in the following tables. 7. Any employees that are not following the guidelines will be asked to meet the dress code standard before they are allowed to work. This may include changing clothing if it smells of smoke, getting name badge ID, changing shoes, etc. 8. Hospital-provided Sea Blue scrubs may be worn only by Surgery, Childbirth Center OB Techs, Cardiac Cath Lab, Central Processing Department, and Interventional Radiology staff. Long hair shoulder length or longer must be tied back and off the shoulders by persons with direct patient contact Hair professional, clean, and neat Mustaches/beards must be short and trimmed and professional in appearance Jewelry in moderation appropriate to position Nails well groomed/reasonable length Not Facial piercing jewelry (i.e., eyebrow, nose, lip, or tongue) Heavily scented personal care products Smell of tobacco Nail polish in a clinical setting 3/13/12 Acrylic/gel nails in clinical setting Political pins Identification. 4 Clinical Employees Uniforms. Uniform dress, skirt, or pants with solidcolored top that are not selected as exclusive colors by other departments Solid-colored scrubs that are not selected as exclusive colors by other departments (see Attachment) Professional-style street clothes and lab coat as appropriate for job category (i.e., triage nurse) White or primary uniform color T-shirts under scrub top, long or short sleeve Long-sleeve turtleneck, white or primary uniform color Knit shirts with collar Solid-color uniform vest over scrub top Tops with discretionary logos Solid-color cardigan or pullover sweater Dress skirts/dresses (may not be more than 2 above knee) Scrub jackets with holiday themes are allowed on the actual holiday recognized by the hospital. These days are: Christmas Day, New Year s Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day and Thanksgiving. Not Denim pants or tops including scrubs (all colors) Leggings, stirrup pants Sweatshirts Tank, halter, spaghetti straps, low cut, transparent, midriff-baring tops Rolled-down waistbands Holiday themes (exceptions at left) Shoes. May wear scrub wear or other attire appropriate to their service line. B. Scrub wear is limited to direct patient caregivers only. C. Scrub wear is color-coded based on service line, as opposed to job code; same color family. 6 Service Line Description Color or zipper sweater is optional. The pants can t be of the cargo or scrub-type. This functional attire recognizes the clinical secretaries dual administrative and patient care role. Patient Sitter Nursing Supervisor/ Shift Administrator Red, collared shirt with either khaki/beige pants or scrub pants. Lab coat with professional street clothes. Child Life Specialist Raspberry shirt either longsleeve or short-sleeve a black or white sweater can be worn over the raspberry shirt with either black or grey slacks, or black scrub bottoms. Pharmacy Pharmacy Techs Style: top and pant must be scrub material Top Color: baby blue Piping: must be baby blue if present on top Tops: must include embroidered hospital logo with department name. Collar type: choice of staff member Pant color: black Pant style: may vary (e.g. cargo, strait legged, etc.) Optional: navy blue warm-up jacket Undershirt: white, may be long or short sleeved or a turtleneck. 7 Service Line Description Color possible Pharmacy Pharmacists Non-scrub wear: White lab coat and professional wear (currently in place). Front Line Support Staff Designated by Department Manager Either a blue vest or blue blazer with an embroidered Metro logo provided by Nye Uniform, with a collared white blouse or dress shirt of their own choosing from their own wardrobe. The scarves and ties originally proposed by the hospital may now be worn at the employee s discretion. Vests up to size 3x are immediately available from Nye; employees who need vests up to size 5x can obtain them through a special order with the uniform company. Employees can wear either black, khaki, navy, or gray pants or dress skirts from their own wardrobe (again, not of the cargo or scrubtype) and brown, navy or black shoes with socks or hose. Volunteer Services Volunteers Purple shirt/smock.
