1 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DRESS CODE: Students and parents are expected to use good judgment choosing student s school attire. Students must come to school dressed in a neat and respectable manner. The Principal and other authorized school officials will determine whether any particular dress apparel, grooming, use of emblems, badges or other symbols result in interference or disruption of the learning process. The following clothing styles will be considered appropriate: Tops: All shirts must have short, three-quarter, or long sleeves. Shirts with spaghetti straps or that leave the shoulders bare are not allowed. No unusually low-cut or see-through blouses, shirts, or jerseys shall be worn during class or the school day. Undergarments should not be visible at any time. No cleavage is to be exposed. Only TES jerseys (on game day only) worn over regular shirt will be exempted from tucking into pants. Sheer fabric outerwear will not be allowed. All tops shall cover the midriff. No bare skin shall be exposed (front or back) when student is standing or sitting. Bottoms: No low-riders or hip-hugger pants will be allowed. Pants, shorts, overalls must be appropriate size. Boys and girls will be allowed to wear shorts provided that: A. Shorts are no shorter than two (2) inches above the kneecap. B. Shorts are hemmed. No cut-offs are allowed. C. They are not bicycle or exercise shorts. Rolled pants do not constitute shorts. Leggings may be worn provided the outer garment meets the dress code policy. Pants displaying writings/slogans across the buttocks are prohibited. General Clothing Guidelines: No article of clothing which depicts drugs, alcoholic beverages, profane or obscene language, sexual overtones, or make disparaging comments about another s racial, ethnic, or religious heritage may be worn at any time. Overalls and jumpers are allowed but must be worn with tops as described in dress code. Both straps should be fastened at all times. Dresses and skirts may be worn only by girls and must be knee-length or longer. Any dress or skirt with splits in them cannot be split above the knee. Inappropriately frayed, ragged, altered, or unfastened clothing will not be permitted. No article of clothing that has holes that have been deliberately cut or of a revealing nature will be allowed. Headgear: Students shall not wear hats, caps, or sunglasses in classes or building at any time. Sweat bands, head picks, combs, rollers, scarves, bandanas, and hoods are not to be worn in classes or building at any time. Shoes: Flip-flops are not allowed. Bedroom shoes of any kind are not acceptable. Cleats are not permitted. All shoes must be secured at the toe and/or heel with shoelaces tied, buckled, secured, or fastened with Velcro for the student s safety.

2 Jewelry/Accessories: Chains hanging from pockets, dog collar-like necklaces, spiked collars, spiked bracelets, or spiked anklets are not allowed. No student will be allowed to wear tongue rings, nose rings, or eyebrow rings. Hair: It shall be permissible for boys to wear shoulder length hair. The hair may not extend below the shoulders. Hair must be clean and combed at all times and should not draw excessive attention to the individual. No hairstyle that disrupts school or the learning environment will be permitted. Administration reserves the right to modify the dress code if a situation arises that may threaten the efficiency of the academic day or the safety of the students. PROCEDURES AND CONSEQUENCES FOR VIOLATION OF THE DRESS CODE Offenders will be given a verbal warning by school personnel if the student simply needs to make an adjustment in the manner in which the clothing is worn; for example, buckle your belt, or tuck in your shirt. If the same school personnel sees a subsequent violation by the same student, a written referral should be made to the school administrator. If school personnel observe a violation of the dress code that can t be immediately corrected, then a referral should immediately be written and sent to the school administrator. Instances where modesty or words/pictures of a disruptive nature is the problem, the student will be held in ISS until appropriate clothing can be brought. In all incidents, the student will receive the appropriate punishment and be returned to class with a form that shows he/she has been dealt with. This slip must be shown to other school personnel in the event that the student is stopped again. Students will not be allowed to go home to change clothes. Administration will search student s discipline file for prior referrals and make a decision for punishment based on a progressive discipline plan concerning dress code. The school does not wish to have to interrupt the student s time in class or inconvenience parents by having to bring their child a change of clothes to school. For this reason, it is suggested that rather than wear any clothing which is questionable and which might not be allowed, it would be better for students to wear clothing that is definitely within the framework of the dress code. The school earnestly asks for parent cooperation in this matter. MIDDLE/HIGH SCHOOL DRESS CODE: The school is responsible for fostering and reinforcing good habits of dress and grooming, as well as promoting an atmosphere of learning. By doing so, we are hopeful students will develop an understanding of appropriate dress in specific environments. Appropriate dress, neatness, and cleanliness are expected of all students. Any article of dress that tends to draw unfavorable attention, interferes with instruction, threatens health or safety, or is in obvious poor taste is not appropriate for school. Below are some guidelines for appropriate dress in the school environment: Purpose of the Student Dress Code: 1. Improve the academic environment; 2. Promote school pride; 3. Ensure school safety; and 4. Instill a work ethic by teaching students that conformity in the workplace is necessary for success.

3 General Guidelines: All clothing must be appropriately sized. No sagging pants allowed. All garments should cover the body in an appropriate manner and not reveal the anatomy of the person other than the head and neck or the lower extremities of the arms and legs. Only items sponsored by the Treutlen County School System may be attached to the clothing (spirit ribbons, etc.). Clothing, jackets, jewelry and accessories may not advertise anything associated with alcohol, tobacco, guns, violence, drugs, or gang-related activity. They may not show anything of a sexual connotation or any item that creates a hostile or disruptive environment. Cosmetics, including but not limited to eye make-up, nail polish, and lipstick can only by worn in a manner as to not draw excessive attention to the person. Sleepwear, pajamas, loungewear, and/or exercise clothing are not allowed. Pants must be worn in the appropriate manner. Boys may not stuff pant legs inside boots, shoes, and/or socks. Pant legs may not be rolled or tied up above the ankles. Logos & Illustrations: Only College, name brand, or Treutlen School System-sponsored logos or illustrations will be allowed on shirts/jackets. Manufacturer s logo must be appropriate diameter or length. No writing allowed on any bottom garments. Hair: Dyed hair other than natural colors (blue, green, orange, purple, etc.) is not permitted. Hair styles that disrupt the learning environment are not permitted. Boys hair may not extend beyond the shoulders or past the eyes. Jackets/Coats: Jackets/coats may be any color, and the general guidelines must be met. Excessively large jackets are prohibited. Trench coats will not be allowed under any circumstances. Hooded jackets (zip-up or button-up) will be allowed. Jackets/coats may not be worn to cover up inappropriate clothing. Tops: Students may wear only collared shirts or blouses with sleeves. T-shirts/sweatshirts that are Treutlen school-related or have a school club logo are allowed. Sweaters and/or sweatshirts must be a solid color, and a collared shirt must be visibly worn under the sweater or sweatshirt; colors do not have to be the same. Solids, colors, stripes (Chevrons), plaids will be allowed. Shirts with Treutlen school logos, school team, school club, or school events are subject to administrative approval. All tops shall cover the midriff. No bare skin shall be exposed (front or back) when student is standing or sitting. Solid vests may be worn over solid colored collared shirt; colors do not have to be the same. All boys must have their shirt tails tucked in at all times. Turtleneck collars on shirts or sweaters are permitted. Layering of shirts to avoid tucking in an outer layer will not be permitted. The only jerseys allowed are Treutlen High/Middle school jerseys. They may be worn on game days only. These jerseys must have sleeves or be worn over an appropriate shirt. Sports with more than one game day a week will be limited to once a week to wear jersey, and it must be approved by the coach. Jersey must be worn in appropriate manner. Undershirts (long or short) that extend past the shirt sleeves do not have to be the same color as the top shirt. Undershirts must be solid. Sheer fabric outerwear will not be allowed.

4 Tattoos: Jewelry: All permanent tattoos must be covered. Face decals or other types of body paint are not permitted. Only studs or conventional earrings may be worn in the ear. No other visible body piercings are allowed (Examples: tongue rings, nose rings, lip rings, eyebrow rings). Chains hanging from pockets, trucker s wallets, dog collar-like necklaces, spiked bracelets, and studded anklets/bracelets are not permitted. Belts: Belts are required. Leather or canvas belts must be worn in belt loops with no loose ends. Loose end must be in belt loop. No studded belts allowed. Neckties: Neckties must be tied and worn appropriately. Sunglasses: Sunglasses are not permitted to be worn inside the building. Headgear: Students may not wear hats, bandanas, scarves, hoods, skullcaps, etc., inside the building. *Scarves may be worn around the neck only. Shoes: All shoes and sandals must be in good repair. All shoes must fit securely on feet. Any color shoe may be worn. No Stiletto high heels allowed. Flip flops, slippers, or house shoes are not permitted. Shoes with shoestrings and/or straps or buckles must be pulled tight and secured at all times. Cleats are not permitted. Bottoms: Pants must be solid in color. Plain blue jeans are acceptable. Pants must be worn at the waist and have belt loops. No saggy pants. Pants may not drag the floor. Shorts must touch the tops of the knees. Dresses, skirts, or shorts must be knee length or longer. NO HOLES or TEARS allowed on bottoms. No writing allowed on bottom garments. No printed, painted, or picture designs are allowed on bottoms. No studs or rhinestone designs on bottoms. See general guidelines for any additional information regarding bottoms.
