1 Corbin Schools Recognized by SESC The Southeast Southcentral Educational Cooperative, SESC, recognized area schools for the 2016 Kentucky test scores. The meeting was held at the Corbin Center where SESC Executive Director, David Johnson, presented recognition banners to area schools for their achievements. The Corbin Independent School District received numerous awards at the event. The Corbin Independent School District received a Gold Medalist banner for being named a Distinguished District and scoring in the 98th percentile in the state. Corbin High School and Corbin Intermediate School each received a School of Distinction banner for scoring between the 95th and 99th percentile in the state. A School of Distinction is the highest honor and individual school can achieve. Corbin Middle and Corbin Elementary Schools were both named Distinguished Schools. Corbin Elementary received a Distinguished School banner and Corbin Middle School received a Bronze Medalist banner. The Corbin Independent School District was also named a District of Distinction. SESC will provide a banner recognizing the district for that accomplishment at a later date. Originally Corbin School District was named a Distinguished District but earned the higher District of Distinction title due to school data changes. Corbin Schools administrators were present at the meeting to receive the awards. The Kentucky Commissioner of Education was also present to congratulate the schools.
2 CMS Hosts Global Leadership Project Corbin Middle School students participated in a Global Service Learning Project to help children in need. Corbin Middle School students, joined by parents, staff, and community members, created paper hands to mail to the Student Rebuild Organization. Students Rebuild is a nonprofit organization geared toward helping children. For every helping hand created the organization donates $1.90 to children s charities around the world. The project raises awareness to children living in poverty in developing countries and gives students the opportunity to really do something to help. We live in a diverse global society, it is important for students to learn about global issues. Corbin Middle School Media Specialist Jennifer Gordon said. Approximately 3,500 hands were created at the event, which put a large dent in the middle schools goal of 5,000 hands. More than 30 students, parents, and community members attended the public event. The middle school plans to continue working towards their goal. Thanksgiving Break November 23-25
3 Corbin Schools Hosts Regional KSBA Meeting Corbin Schools hosted the Regional Kentucky School Boards Association, KSBA, Meeting at the Corbin Center. The event was hosted by Corbin Schools due to Corbin Board of Education Chairperson, Kim Croley, serving as the Regional Board Chairperson. Croley was elected chairperson in 2014 and serves the Upper Cumberland region. The meeting consisted of a dinner as well as presentations and workshops for the regions board members and superintendents. KSBA holds annual regional meetings in each region of Kentucky to present information and discuss each regions unique needs. Approximately 60 board members and superintendents attended the meeting. Each person received a small gift and door prizes were presented following the meetings. Corbin High School students, Zac Hart and Abbi Disney, provided musical entertainment for the guests and student Molli Mulberry assisted at the sign in table. Board members and superintendents were very complimentary of the meeting and facilities. Corbin Schools Hosts Museum Nights Corbin Primary, Elementary, and Intermediate Schools hosted museum nights to showcase student work. Parents, students, staff, and community members were invited to the schools to view the students projects. The school displays the work students have completed through project based learning. All students at the schools take part in museum nights. They create the work, help set up the displays, and guide parents and community members through the project filled hallways.
4 CHS Hosts 3rd Grade Science Day Corbin High School Science classes hosted a science day for Corbin Elementary students. The high school students taught approximately 250 third grade students about fossils, leaf identification, constellations, track identification, earthquakes, gravity, force, natural resources, and food chains. Each topic was addressed in minute presentations and activities for the students. Each presentation station was led by two high school students, the elementary students rotated to each station. The purpose of the event was to show both the younger and older students that science can be fun. The high school students were able to teach science concepts to the younger students in a fun and interactive way. However, to successfully complete their presentations they had to research science core content, design lesson plans, and be able to explain the concepts to the younger students. The high school sciences classes complete the science day for elementary students each year. The elementary teachers commented they enjoy the trip each year because it is just a short bus ride away and students get the opportunity to spend the entire day participating in fun experiments while learning about science. Childress Signs with Midway University Corbin High School Senior John-Austin Childress signed to play golf with Midway University. Childress has been a member of the Corbin High School Varsity golf team for three years. He was named first team All-Conference for the 2015 and 2016 seasons and second team All-Conference in In his senior season Childress accomplished four top five finishes and nine top twenty finishes. Childress will be a part of the first recruiting class for Midway University Men s Golf. We are extremely excited to have John-Austin play at Midway, Midway Men s Golf Coach Otis Smith said.
