1 ISL Newsletter 68 22nd January 2016 WELCOME A busy and fun week here at ISL, with as usual lots going on!! This morning Primary students enjoyed a creative workshop on Happiness, organised by Leuven s Museum M. On February 1st, all ISL-students will visit Museum M to see one of their great exhibitions. We celebrated quite a few birthdays this past week. Congratulations to Paolo, Ichi and Eiichiro! Today was Miss Elien s last day of her internship here at the International School of Leuven. By organising a little farewell/pancake-party for her, our students and staff wanted to say thank you for all her excellent work ànd her friendship! Hopefully we will see lots more of her in the future! Next week Wednesday, the entire ISL-team will travel to the International School of Ghent for a joint IPC-training session. No school or daycare for students that day. We want to offer our sincere condolences to Miss Shelly and her family as her father-in-law passed away yesterday. Miss Shelly will travel to Holland for the funeral next week and won t be at ISL on Thursday. Miss Stephanie will take over in Pre-Primary that day. Please follow us on facebook and check out our new Twitter account. By sharing our stories, pictures and tweets you are really helping us to promote the school! ORGANISATION The last day before Carnival Break is half day. In the morning we will celebrate carnival here at school. All children can come to school dressed up as their favourite book character because we are also opening the libarary that morning!! We invote all parents for a coffee moment at the start of the day! The day will finish at 13h, so after lunch! This is stated differently on the school calendar. There will be after-school care provided from 13h until 15h. We are happy to announce we have made a deal with the CLB (which is the institute that does medical check-ups in the local schools). From September onwards, this institute will give our Pre-Primary, first, third ànd fifth graders an annual medical check-up (length, weighth, eyesight, hearing, ) and they will also take care of vaccinations (after parents approval of course). Students who wish to practise their piano-skills, can do so in the EAL-room from now on. Please check with Miss Donique for available time-slots. Max. 2 students in that room at one time! 2 PTA-CORNER A word from our PTA-president Mrs Jean Felder: Wow, last week the ISL cafeteria was PACKED with students enjoying another movie afternoon. The kids had fun working on movie activity sheets and watching Hotel Transylvania 2 with their classmates while enjoying Monster Munchies. Special thanks, yet again, to our fabulous moms who helped with movie night and even Elien who stayed late just to help us! Without your help every month, we couldn't have these wonderful movie afternoons! Would love to see a few more parents help out at future movie afternoons. CONGRATULATIONS to our Holiday Readers: PrePrimary - Aureliano Foundation Yui 1st Grade Destiny 2nd Grade - no one 3rd Grade Joseph 4th Grade Nitika 5th Grade Jason Silliest Reading Picture - Joshua These readers are not only gaining knowledge, but are also gaining a new book to add to their library at home. During the next book club order (in February) they will receive a Scholastics gift certificate for up to 10 Euros to purchase a new book. There is only ONE more reading challenge left, so be sure to remind your kids to write down what they are reading during the February break. Of course participation is optional. Thursday, January 28 Career Day 9:00 am A few parents will be giving brief presentations to the students about their careers. A special thank you to these wonderful parents for donating their valuable time! Thursday, February 4 Valentine s Party. Have your child bring in a special Valentine for each of their classmates. It can be one they made, printed out or bought. The children will exchange them at the end of the day. Friday, February 5 Library Grand Opening, Coffee Morning & Story Book Character Day All parents are welcome to join the grand opening of the new ISL library! We will be having coffee available for parents to enjoy during the opening. Help your child dress up like one of their favourite book characters. It can be from ANY book in ANY language, but should not be scary. (No blood, sharp accessories, etc.) Your child should also bring in the book to share with their classmates who their character is and why they like them so much. If your child needs help with a costume, just let Donique know a few days ahead of time and we will help them out! Friday, February 5 Carnival Day Kids will have a great time on their last day of school before break. School will get out at 13:00h. ISL newsletter 2

3 February 5 (Friday) 15 (Monday) Winter Break Reading Challenge. - This will be the LAST reading challenge for those that would like to participate. Will also have the silly reading picture category too. Friday, February 19 Family Movie Evening - Parents are encouraged to attend and socialize while the children watch a movie starting at 17:30h. Please bring a dish to share. Thursday, February th Day of School. Help your child decide what they want to share with their class that involves 100 of something. A jar of 100 paperclips? A rock collection? A poster with pictures of 100 of their favorite flowers? Let their imagination soar if it can fit in the classroom, share it with the class. (Items will be sent back home the same day.) Hope to see everyone at one of the upcoming events. Remember, without your help we couldn't provide these wonderful activities!
