1 CRITERIA FOR FCCS TEACHING AWARDS The nomination forms and criteria will be posted on the FCCS website, so students/ nominators can download and submit them. Purpose and Description: These awards are designed to recognize teaching excellence and innovation within the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies. Normally, in each academic year, one award will be given to a faculty member for teaching excellence and one award will be given for teaching innovation. Junior, senior and sessional faculty are all eligible. Special consideration will be given to teaching approaches that develop one or more of the following elements: Experiential Learning, Interdisciplinarity, Internationalization, Undergraduate Research and Scholarship. Nominations close on March 31 of each year (nomination forms must be submitted by this date). Supporting materials of no more than 10 pages plus CV and TEQs must be submitted by June 1 in hard copy and electronic format. Award winners will be decided in late June/early July and presentations made in late August. The recipients will be encouraged to speak about their teaching strategies either in a faculty workshop or at the annual Learning Conference sponsored by the Centre for Teaching and Learning. A faculty member who has previously won the award will be ineligible for the same award for a period of three years. AWARD FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE: Nomination Procedures Faculty members (including Heads, Associate Deans and Deans), alumni, and students may submit nominations as individuals or as a group. Faculty members may not self-nominate. Only nominations pertaining to courses taught within the previous 2 years will be considered. A nomination form must be completed and forwarded to the Administrative Assistant, Jennifer Novy (jennifer.novy@ubc.ca), by March 31. The nominee(s) must follow up, by June 1, with submission of evidence of teaching excellence, in both electronic and hard copy formats. This evidence may include, but is not limited to, the following: Current CV of the nominee Nominee s teaching dossier for the year under review. Dossier material should be ten, double-spaced pages or less and may include, but is not limited to, a teaching statement, sample outlines, brief list of contributions to the scholarship of teaching and learning, or multi-media links if applicable. Teaching evaluations from the previous 2 years. These will be considered in addition to the 10 pages of documentation. No letters of support are required. Criteria Nominations must be based on courses taught during the 24-month period preceding the nomination deadline. While the teaching excellence award is based on a comprehensive view of teaching, nominees are not required to meet all the criteria outlined below. This award will be based on strengths in three or more of the following areas. 1) Pedagogical Practice: Constructive alignment between learning outcomes, teaching methods, assignments, and assessments.

2 2) Excellence in Teaching: Evidence of teaching success based on strong teaching evaluations contextualized with information on course subject, size, and level; on peer evaluations; and on other forms of student feedback. 3) Scholarship of Teaching and Learning: Commitment to pedagogical advancement shown through curriculum development, activities outside the classroom that further learning (workshops, community or campus events), dissemination of research on teaching, or other forms of professional / pedagogical development. 4) Student Guidance and Support: Supervision, tutoring, or mentoring of undergraduate or graduate students, or of graduate teaching assistants. 5) Advancement of the Faculty s Strategic Goals: Teaching or projects that encourage experiential learning, interdisciplinarity, internationalization, or undergraduate research and scholarship. The nominee(s) must follow up, by June 1, with submission of evidence of successful teaching innovation in both electronic and hard copy formats. This evidence may include, but is not limited to, the following: Nominee s or nominees Course syllabi Project descriptions (e.g. Assignments, assessments, completed student work) Student or peer evaluations with background context (course subject, learning objectives, size and level) Student reflections, presentation material, or excerpts from the faculty member s teaching dossier, which demonstrates innovation. Evidence of innovation should be ten, double-spaced pages or less. Only innovations that are within two years of the application date will be considered. The faculty member must decide what materials best represent his or her successful innovations in teaching. No letters of support are required. Criteria The teaching innovation award is based on successful experimentation with pedagogical methods. Nominations must be based on innovations that have taken place within 24 months of the nomination deadline. The award will be based on strengths in three or more of the following criteria, so nominees are not required to meet all of them. 1) Innovative Instructional Methods: Use of innovative teaching methods such as blended learning, the flipped classroom, team teaching, experiential learning projects within the community, or other innovations in format, content, and delivery methods. Use of innovative evaluation methods and demonstrated alignment between learning outcomes and assignments. Encouragement of student engagement, critical thinking, and autonomy (such as participation in the syllabus or designing assignments) appropriate to context. 2) Curricular Innovation: Actively determining the form, content, and structure of courses and programs, particularly in relation to the blending of Creative and Critical elements.

3 3) Success in Achieving Instructional Goals: Evidence that innovations in teaching methods, content, and evaluations have achieved previously defined learning outcomes. Student evaluations or peer commentary should be contextualized in relation to instructional goals. 4) Dissemination of Teaching Innovation: Workshops, research talks, publications, or other organized activities that disseminate the innovative pedagogical approaches and further encourage students and faculty members engagement with teaching and learning. 5) Advancement of the Faculty s Strategic Goals: Teaching or projects that encourage experiential learning, interdisciplinarity, internationalization, or undergraduate research and scholarship. AWARDS COMMITTEE: The awards committee, which will be a sub-committee of the Teaching and Learning Committee, will evaluate nominations based on the above criteria. The Teaching and Learning Committee shall appoint members of the Awards Committee from among its members and the university at large. At the discretion of the Teaching and Learning Committee, a maximum of 2 external members (from outside FCCS) and up to two previous award winners may be appointed to the Awards Committee. Both Creative and Critical studies must be represented. Previous winners will be encouraged to sit on the committee to lend their expertise. Committee members are appointed for two-year terms, which are renewable. Normally, the Awards Committee shall consist of 1 faculty member external to FCCS 1 FCCS or non-fccs student chosen at the discretion of the committee to avoid any conflict of interest 1 previous winner 1 representative from Creative Studies 1 representative from Critical studies
